Letter from PTO Co-Presidents
|
|
Dear Burr School Parents and Guardians,
What a terrific fall it has been already! The PTO has been busy in the first month of school with our Kindergarten and Back-to-School Picnics, and Teacher Appreciation Luncheon. It was great to see many familiar faces, as well as lots of new ones, last week at Curriculum night. The first parent-principal coffee is today, Monday, September 29th at 8:30 a.m.
Our first PTO Meeting of the year is this Thursday, October 2 at 7pm. If you can only make it to one PTO meeting this year, the first one is a must; you will meet other parents and find out how to get involved at Burr. Babysitting will be available.
We would like to introduce this year's PTO board. Our new board members this year include Marlene Gibson (Co-President), Sloane Goldhagen (Co-President), Cherie Bosarge-Dutton (Community Building Coordinator), Susandra Pasaribu Ma (Education Support Coordinator), and Sharon Reilly (Communications Coordinator). They join standing members Jaye Schneider (Co-President), Heidi Bankmann (Secretary), Judy O'Neil (Treasurer), and Greg Thompson (Fundraising Coordinator). We would like to thank our outgoing board members Jason Wong, Tricia Bombara, Bijal Dalal, and Beth Tierney for the donation of their time and amazing efforts over the past two years.
If you attended curriculum night, you heard about the PTO volunteer challenge. We would like every family at Burr to volunteer at least once this year. There are opportunities for everyone, from running a game at Halloween night, or being the host of a Creative Arts and Sciences presentation, to writing emails from your home. We urge each family to get involved - it benefits everyone.
hanks to all of the efforts planning and fundraising, we will be installing Burr's new playground this fall. While we are waiting for exact dates, please plan to take part in the community build process in late-October/early November. We will need 150 volunteers to make this happen!
Please keep your eyes open for the red envelope in your child's folder. It will contain all of the information for Gift For Burr, our annual fundraiser. This campaign is the primary way that we raise the funds for the PTO's annual operating budget. Where does the money go?
- Technology
- Creative Arts and Sciences
- Community Events, like World Cultures Festival, Halloween Family Fun Night and May Fair
- Academic Support
- Equipment
While the recommended donation is $150 per family, any amount is appreciated. Our goal is to have 100% participation.
Questions, comments, feedback? Please feel free to grab any board member to chat, or email us at pto-board@burr.org. We look forward to seeing you on October 2nd!
Marlene Gibson, Sloane Goldhagen, and Jaye Schneider

Library Volunteers Still Needed!
|
|
The following classes are in need of library volunteers:
- Rudek
-
Procaccini
-
Oh
-
Field
-
Glode
Volunteering in the library is a wonderful way to participate in the school and in your child's education! It's easy! You will get training to spend 30-45 minutes in the library (every week or every other week) helping your child's class: checking books in and out and putting books back on the shelves. Training can be arranged for those who are interested. If you volunteered last year you do not need to attend a training.
Questions? Interested in volunteering?

Safe and Supportive Schools Presentation
|
|
Wednesday October 8 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Newton North High School Auditorium, 457 Walnut Street, Newton, MA. The Newton Parent Advisory Council for Special Education and the Trauma & Learning Policy Initiative, a collaboration of Massachusetts Advocates for Children and Harvard Law School, invite parents, educators and others to a free presentation on the Safe and Supportive Schools Framework, part of a recent Massachusetts law. Joe Ristuccia of the Trauma & Learning Policy Initiative, author, School Psychologist and Adjunct Professor at Lesley University, will discuss how adverse childhood experiences have a neurobiological and psychological impact on children that can undermine their ability to learn, form relationships, and self-regulate their behavior. Ristuccia will discuss how the new Safe and Supportive Schools Framework will support schools to address the needs of all students. The talk will be introduced by State Representative Ruth Balser, and followed by an open discussion.

Get the flu vaccine at school, not the flu!
|
|
Seasonal flu vaccination clinics will be held during the school day at the Newton Public Schools in October and November. Students in Kindergarten through grade 12 may receive vaccine.
The Burr School clinic will be on Wednesday October 20th. Each student to be vaccinated must have a parent/guardian complete two forms: a consent/screening form and a vaccine administration record/insurance form. Forms are available in the school nurse's office, or may be downloaded at www.newtonma.gov/flu. Forms are due to the School Nurse Monday October 20th.
Parents may choose the flu shot or the nasal spray flu vaccine for their child. Parents must indicate the type of vaccine they wish their child to receive by checking it on the form.
Vaccine Information Statements about each type of vaccine are available for review at www.newtonma.gov/flu or in the school nurse's office. There is no cost to receive the vaccine, but insurance information is requested.
Seasonal flu vaccine is offered at no cost to families because the Massachusetts Department of Public Health is providing vaccine to communities who choose to vaccinate school-age children. The City of Newton Health & Human Services Department is providing the vaccination supplies and staff time to run the program, with the help of Medical Reserve Corps volunteers. Some costs will be recouped through insurance billing. All students, regardless of insurance status, are invited to receive vaccine with parent permission.
Students are not required to receive flu vaccine, however the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends flu vaccine for all people age 6 months and up. There are many places to get a flu vaccine including at school, your primary health care provider or community clinics. For additional clinic dates for the whole family, visit www.newtonma.gov/flu.
In addition to vaccination, it is important to practice good hand hygiene and cough etiquette by washing hands often; covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or the arm; and staying home when sick.
For more flu prevention tips, talk to the school nurse or check out these websites: www.newtonma.gov/flu. and www.cdc.gov/flu
