Burr Playground: Fundraising Update

The Burr Playground fundraising effort is nearly complete, thanks to strong participation & contributions from the extended Burr community. We're on track to reach our $150K target amount, but we're not there yet. Here's an overview of where we are:
  • Target amount: $150K
  • Amount raised so far: $138K

The Move-a-Thon last week was a big success -- Thank you to the students and Burr family members for supporting this event, as well as to the Burr teachers, administrators and parent volunteers for making it happen. So far, the Move-a-Thon event has raised close to $5,000, with a few additional pledge amounts still to be turned-in.

The Buy-a-Brick sale has been making very good progress. So far, nearly 100 bricks have been sold. Our goal is to sell 150 bricks by June 30th. So, if you are planning to purchase a brick, now is the time!

We are also working with corporate donors in the neighborhood, in an effort to close the remaining gap in funding. Recently, we were very fortunate to receive generous donations from Village Bank in Auburndale, as well as DeWire Brothers Auto Body. These companies have been terrific sponsors of the Burr School in many ways over the past several years.

A very special "thank you" to the Burr Community Afterschool Program (BCAP) for their ongoing partnership and very generous donation towards the new playground. We are all truly fortunate to have such a terrific program as BCAP in the Burr community.

Thanks to everyone for your continued support here. We are very close to reaching our goal...!

June PTO News

A big THANK YOU to the PTO board members who finish their two-year terms this month - Tricia Bombara, Bijal Dalal and Beth Tierney - thanks for your service to Burr!  Another huge thank you to Jason Wong who finishes FOUR years on the PTO board!

At our final PTO meeting, we voted in new board members:  Cherie Bosarge-Dutton, as Community-Building CoordinatorMarlene Gibson and Sloane Goldhagen as Co-Presidents, Susandra Pasaribu Ma as Education Support Coordinator, and Sharon Reilly as Communication Coordinator. Thanks for stepping up to board roles.

Other items that were approved during the final PTO meeting, include:
  • A change to the Burr PTO by-laws that allow up to four PTO co-presidents at a time
  • The fund-raising plan for the 2014-2015 school year
  • The use of PTO surplus funds to be used for the playground, if necessary
The playground committee presented a draft of the playground layout, along with the details of why the new playground is necessary, fundraising, and a tentative schedule at the public playground meeting.  Thank you to the playground committee, they have worked tirelessly all year to keep this project moving.

Want to get more involved in our Burr School Community?  We are looking for volunteers for Gift for Burr, our annual fund-raising campaign.  There are opportunities for parents who can only volunteer remotely, too!  Please email  pto-board@burrpto.org for more information.

5th Grade Playground Fundraising Thank You

The 5th Grade Fundraising Committee wants to thank the 5th graders and alumni who came out to Shaw's last weekend to spread the word about the Burr Playground project:

                Pete Campbell

                Lilah Gentry

                Nicholas Hoch

                Emma Pleynet

                Toscana Urbano

                Daniel Viveiros

                Jacob Viveiros

The enthusiastic group raised almost $300 for the playground, and handed out flyers to dozens of our neighbors.  Go Burr!

Creative Arts and Sciences Thanks You!!

We want to thank everyone who volunteered to make the Creative Arts and Science programs happen this year at Burr. We had an amazing year of nineteen programs, beginning in October with a performance by the Klezmer Conservatory Band for the entire school, and ending last week with a program on Lights & Lasers by the Discovery Museum for the 4th graders. Each grade experienced three different curriculum-enriching programs, including presentations by a New York Times best selling author, scientists, engineers, poets, cultural performers, and an internationally renowned origami artist who taught mathematical concepts. These dynamic presenters inspired students with informative classroom workshops and performances, supporting grade level curriculum concepts taught by our amazing teachers.

A big thank you goes out to Bill Doran, who created beautiful flyers for many of our programs this year, and a special thank you and fond farewell to Stephanie Mamis, who's been a tireless CASC volunteer and has created dozens of flyers during her years at Burr.Without all of your help, we couldn't offer these programs to our children.Thank you so much, you're the ones who make it happen!!!

Cherie Bosarge-Dutton, Johanne Campbell, Nancy Caulfield, Bill Doran, Felicia Falchuk, Susan Florio, Donna Frankel, Agnes Gee, Susan Kim, Betsy Kontonleon, Deborah Lee Hill, Stephanie Mamis, Liz Morefield, Florence Nephtali, Laurie Nichols, Colleen Rougeaux, Deanna Salemme, Kim Tulimieri, Valerie Wastcoat, Sara Zakrzewski

Have a great summer and we hope to see you again next year!!
