Dear Burr Families,
We only have 10 days of school left before the start of summer vacation! This is such a busy time of year for parents, teachers, and children. We've already had many grade levels host events to celebrate the learning that the children have done this school year and will continue with more this week.
We had a fabulous Color Day last week that Ms. Michna and Ms. Manion, our P.E. teachers, organized and set up. The children were in high spirits and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day. I'd like to thank them both and all of the parent volunteers who helped to make the day a success.
I'd like to congratulate our fourth and fifth grade band and orchestra members and our Fourth Grade Chorus for a fabulous Spring Concert last week. Many thanks to Ms. Tenney, Mr. DiCarlo, and Mr. O'Neil for preparing the children so well. Ms. Tenney and the fifth graders also recently presented excellent performances of Mary Poppins to our whole school and their families.
As we close out the year with celebration and reflection activities, we are also supporting students' transition to the next grade level and preparing them to move on to the next grade. The fifth graders will visit Day Middle School on Friday and the students in grades K-4 will "Step Up" to meet the teachers at the next grade level on June 17. We hope that these transition visits will help alleviate the anxiety that some children may feel about graduating to the next grade level and build excitement about returning to school in September.
We have completed preliminary class placements for next year. The teachers all put a lot of time and effort into weighing all of the factors that help create an optimal learning environment for each student. I thank you all for respecting the staff's professional judgment about the best possible learning environment for your child next year. The class lists are in draft form until late August because enrollment fluctuates throughout the summer and one student moving in or out of the district can significantly change the makeup of a group.
We will let you know of your child's placement in late August. Class placements, once they are sent out to everyone, are final. Changes cannot be made since they seriously compromise the balance that we work so hard to achieve. The class lists will be emailed, unless you request that we mail a paper copy to you. Consequently, it is important for us to have your most current email address. Today, we will send out an email message to the primary contact address currently listed in our records. This will be the email address that we will use to send out class placements in August. If you do not receive the email, or want placement information sent to a different address, please let us know by emailing the correct address to mindy_johal@newton.k12.ma.us.
Staffing News:
This time of year often brings many changes. This year we have several wonderful staff members who will be making a move to explore other career opportunities next year.
Lauren Tenney will not be returning to Burr in September. Lauren will be moving to New York City to follow her dreams of music performance. She will be missed greatly at Burr. She has done such a stellar job of nurturing a love of music in the children at Burr and developed such wonderful relationships with them and the staff. Of course, we all wish her much success in her music career.
Erica Loucks will be moving to Bowen School to teach 4th grade in a co-taught classroom. Erica has been at Burr for five years as an inclusion aide and was the long-term substitute in second grade last year. This year, Erica secured a part-time special education teaching position in our learning center and has supported our fourth and fifth grade students. The position at Bowen School is full-time and will draw upon Erica's expertise in special education and her desire to be a classroom teacher.
Samantha Bracy will be teaching at Underwood School next year. She will be the lead teacher in a special program at Underwood. Samantha and Trevor were a great team in the fourth grade co-taught this year. The reduction of one co-taught classroom at Burr required some staffing adjustments. I am happy that we are able to keep Samantha in Newton.
Tia Marola will be moving to Cabot School where she will be the inclusion facilitator. Tia has been at Burr for five years and done a wonderful job of supporting children with special needs. Prior to Burr, Tia worked at Newton North High School. We wish her much luck in her new position.
Classroom Teachers for Next Year:
Kindergarten: Ms Frail, Ms. Mc Mahon, Ms. Rudek
First Grade: Ms. Espinal, Mr. Gaita, Ms. Golden, Ms. Fitch
Second Grade: Ms. Procaccini, Ms. Field, Ms. Roberts
Third Grade: Ms. Canning, Ms. Collins, Ms. Miller
Fourth Grade: Mr. Glode & Ms. O'Donnell, Ms. Miller, Ms. Robinson
Fifth Grade: Ms. Cooley, Ms. Moran, Ms. Harris
I'd like to welcome Jennifer Miller to the fourth grade team. Some of you already know Jen from first and second grade. Jen covered Ms. Espinal's leave last year and is currently covering Ms. Procaccini's maternity leave. Jen has a M.Ed in Elementary Education from Lesley College and has taught in the Needham and Weston Public Schools before coming to Newton. The interview committee was unanimous in their endorsement to appoint Jen to this position. The bulk of Jen's experience has been at the upper elementary level. Jen was an inclusion aide in Ms. Collins' third grade classroom until May of this year, so many of the current third graders know her already.
I hope to see many of you at the Burr School Move-a-thon today. Come by and cheer us on as we raise money for our playground and have some fun moving around! Please be sure to attend the last PTO meeting of the year on Wednesday, June 11th. You will learn more about next year and our plans for the playground.
Sincerely,
Mindy

The Move-a-thon is Today!
|
|
The Move-a-thon is today! Some reminders:
- Make sure that you have turned in your pledge sheet
- Don't forget to wear sneakers and a hat, and apply sunscreen at home
- Water will be available at water stations along the course
Today, the students at Burr School are taking up the challenge to both celebrate fitness and raise money for the new playground! Today, all students at Burr School will participate in a Move-a-thon by "moving" around the ¼ mile Burr track. Students can choose how they move (walk, jog, run, skip, dance, jump rope, etc.) with the goal of moving around the track the entire time.
Grade Level Move-a-thon Times:
Kindergarten: 9:00 - 9:30 AM
Grade One: 9:30 - 10:15 AM
Grade Two: 10:15 - 11:00 AM
Grade Three: 12:45 - 1:45 PM
Grade Four: 11:00 - 12:00 PM
Grade Five: 1:45 - 2:45 PM
As a reminder, students can ask people - friends, family, neighbors, etc. - to sponsor them by pledging an amount for completing the event. 100% of the donations will benefit the Burr School Playground and donations are tax deductible! (Cash or checks made out to "Burr School PTO - Playground".) If every student collects $25.00 in donations, the students could earn over $10,000 for the new playground!

Newton Public Schools Gift Policy
From Ms. Johal
|
|
Newton Public Schools Gift Policy: As we reach the end of the school year, we ask that families please be mindful of the Newton School Committee's NO GIFTS policy stating, No teacher in the performance of regular duties shall receive presents from the students under his or her direction. This policy does not apply to gifts of classroom supplies or materials that are for student use. A personal note, card, or drawing showing appreciation takes time and thought, but will be greatly valued by your child's teachers.

Burr Playground Fundraising
|
|
The Burr Playground fundraising effort has been very successful this year, thanks to strong participation & contributions from the extended Burr community. We're on track to reach our $150K target amount, but we're not there yet! Here's an overview of where we are:
- Target amount: $150K
- Amount raised so far: $118K
- Plan to close the remaining gap:
- Buy-a-Brick: $12K
- Move-a-Thon: $5K
- Corporate Donations: $7K
- Discounts on playground install (demolition & excavation): $10K
So far, nearly 40 playground bricks have been sold. Our goal is to sell 125-150 bricks. If you are planning to buy a brick, now is the time! Also, the Move-a-Thon is a terrific way to reach-out to grandparents, aunts/uncles & extended family so they can participate in helping this great cause for current & future Burr students. (Need a Move-a-Thon Sponsor Sheet? Click HERE.) Your continued support here is truly appreciated!

Water Safety - Misconceptions & Safety Tips
|
|
Warm weather has finally arrived. Please take a few minutes to read through some Water Safety reminders.
Did you know...
- Drowning can be SILENT and quick. Most children DO NOT thrash around and yell for help when they are drowning, they just quietly sink.
- About 88% of children who drown WERE under some form of supervision. Adults who were present at the time were often distracted (eating, on the phone, doing chores, reading, or chatting with others).
- 77 percent of the children who drowned had been seen 5 minutes or less before being missed and subsequently discovered in the water.
- Even with a lifeguard present, an if the child knows how to swim, drownings can still occur. You must watch your child! Lifeguards are NOT the main person responsible for supervising children in the water. The typical lifeguard-to-swimmer ratio at public swimming areas may be high.
Children can drown in as little as an inch or two of water. Be aware that shallow wading pools are an easily accessible hazard. Adults think the child is still inside the home, but has really gone outside and into the pool/water area. Empty wading pools immediately after use, store them upside down and out of children's reach. The same goes for tubs and large buckets. Cover and lock hot tubs/spas.
Familiarize yourself with the terms "Secondary Drowning" and "Dry Drowning"
http://www.today.com/health/toddlers-near-death-secondary-drowning-warning-parents-2D79738995
- There are different levels (Graded 1-3) of life vests! Level 1 floats the best. Look for US Coast Guard & UL approved vests specific to your child's weight and have a snug (not loose) fit. Make sure it keeps the child afloat & really works.
- Even life jackets DO NOT substitute the need for a competent adult actively supervising children. Children can still float face down and drown while wearing a life vests. Do not substitute air mattresses, or inflatable water wings & toys for approved life vests. For more life jacket info see Healthy Children.org http://www.healthychildren.org/English/safety-prevention/at-play/Pages/Life-Jackets-and-Life-Preservers.aspx
- US Coast Guard Site http://www.uscg.mil/hq/cg5/cg5214/pfdselection.asp#selection
TIPS
- Enroll your children in approved swimming lessons. But, DO NOT consider children "drown-proof" because they have had years of swimming lessons, can swim well or are with a "buddy".
- NEVER leave a child unsupervised for even a moment that is in or near any water: pool or spa, tubs, lake or ocean.
- Never leave an older child in charge of a younger child.
- Fence in portable pools and encourage your neighbors to do the same. If you can't fence the pool, use smaller, easier to store portable pools. Then, empty the water ANY time you are not supervising the pool and turn it upside down or store it away.
- Children may leave the home with adults believing the child is still inside. Install door and window alarms/locks that will alert you when someone leaves the house and enters any area that has water. Close up pet doors.
- Don't let children who cannot swim use inflatable toys or air mattresses in water that is above their waist. Keep children at arms length.
Pool & Spa/Hot Tub Tips
PUT A FENCE COMPLETELY AROUND ALL POOLS. If the house serves as the fourth side of a fence surrounding a pool, install an alarm on the exit door to the yard and pool. For additional protection, install window guards on windows facing the pool. Learn the importance of why four sided isolation fencing completely separating the pool from the house and yard is best, & fence types that are and are not recommended (children can climb some chain link fences with loop openings that exceed 1¼ inches). Make sure pool gates open out from the pool and self close and self latch at a height that children can't reach. Remember to lock gates immediately after use. Consider alarms on the gate to alert you when someone opens the gate and surface wave alarms. Check specific local regulations on fencing. Please see: Consumer Product Safety Commission www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/pubs/pool.pdf and the American Academy of Pediatrics http://www.healthychildren.org Swimming Pool Safety
Protect your child from hazardous drain suction entrapment in pools, kiddie pools and spas/hot tubs. Familiarize yourself with The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act, use compliant Anti-Vortex Drain covers, know where the pump cut off switch is located, For more see http://www.poolsafely.gov/faqs/
