7:00pm Final Burr PTO Meeting

8:00pm Community Meeting to Review Proposed Playground Design and Construction Schedule

The final PTO Meeting of the year will begin at 7pm, with three important agenda items requiring a vote (see details below.)  At 8pm, a Community Meeting will be held to review the proposed new playground design and construction schedule.  Please make every effort to attend these important, back-to-back meetings on Thursday, June 11 in the Burr Cafetorium.

PTO Items Requiring Vote at June 11th Meeting

At the PTO's final meeting for the year next Thursday, June 11, we will be voting on three items:
  • a change in by-laws to allow up to four co-presidents
  • the nominations of PTO board members for next year
  • the use of surplus PTO funds for the new playground
This note serves to inform our community of the votes in advance of the meeting.  We encourage all PTO members to attend this meeting, and the public playground meeting following, both on June 11th.

Proposal to Change the Current PTO By-Laws

We would like to change the current Burr PTO by-laws to allow up to four co-presidents at a time.  Several other Newton elementary schools use this model, and it is helpful to have additional board members to take on the co-president responsibilities.  The current and proposed verbiage is below:

Current Verbiage:
*Board of Directors: The PTO Board consists of eight elected Board Members and the School Principal as an ex-officio member.  The Officers of the corporation are the two Co-presidents, Treasurer and Secretary.  In addition, the Board includes four elected Coordinators.  In the event that two individuals are selected as Committee Co-coordinators for a given area, one of them will be designated to formally serve on the Board of Directors.  Terms for all positions are 2 years, ending in June.  Whenever possible, the terms of the two co-presidents should be staggered to provide greater continuity from year to year.

Proposed Verbiage:
*Board of Directors: The PTO Board consists of between eight and ten elected Board Members and the School Principal as an ex-officio member.  The Officers of the corporation are two of the Co-presidents, Treasurer and Secretary.  In addition, the Board includes four elected Coordinators, and may include up to two additional Co-presidents.  In the event that two individuals are selected as Committee Co-coordinators for a given area, one of them will be designated to formally serve on the Board of Directors.  In the event that there are more than two Co-presidents, only two will be designated to formally serve as Officers of the corporation. Terms for all positions are 2 years, ending in June.  Whenever possible, the terms of the two co-presidents should be staggered to provide greater continuity from year to year.

Proposal to Use Surplus PTO Funds for Playground Project

The Burr Playground fundraising effort is close to meeting our $150K target, which would enable the playground to be installed in Fall 2014. In order to install in that timeframe, the playground structure needs to be ordered by June 30th, 2014. A few of the remaining fundraising programs are still in progress, so we would like to seek approval from the Burr PTO to use "surplus" funds in the PTO savings account to close any potential remaining gap in funds. These would be amounts in the existing PTO accounts that the PTO Board has determined could be safely used for this purpose. This proposal will be reviewed & brought up for a vote at the next Burr PTO meeting on June 11, 2014.

Board Nominations for 2014 - 2016 Term

* The role of Communications Coordinator on the Burr PTO Board remains open.  Please contact a board member at pto-board@burrpto.org if you are interested, or to learn more about the position.

Here are brief bios on the board members who have stepped up for the 2014 - 2016 term:

Cherie Bosarge-Dutton (nominated for Community Building Coordinator) - Occasional writer and recovering lawyer, Cherie now works at home full-time for Ethan Dutton, a first grader, and Lindsay (Zizzy) Dutton, a kindergartner.  She and her husband Jeff have lived in Auburndale for eight years.  She spends most of her volunteer time working with regional and international relief and missional organizations that focus on empowering women and children.

Marlene Gibson (nominated for Co-President) is a stay at home mom to two Burr kids, one fifth grader moving on this year and a first grader. She is an avid gardener who loves helping out in the Burr garden. When not outside planting, Marlene enjoys sewing and crocheting. Marlene looks forward to serving our great school community as a board member.

Sloane Goldhagen (nominated for Co-President) is the parent of two children at Burr - Noah (3) and Chloe (K). Sloane has volunteered at Burr in both the classrooms and with PTO events. She has been a Room Parent, a Library volunteer and a member of the Hospitality and Mayfair Committees.  She looks forward to working with the Burr community as a board member.

Susandra Pasaribu Ma (nominated for Education Support Coordinator) is a parent of three children who are currently enrolled at Burr (two fourth-graders, Arielle and Isabelle and Denedra, a first grader). In the past, she has  been  involved in the following PTO programs: Room parent, Library helper, Burr World Cultures planning committee, May Fair Committee, and volunteered for Understanding Our Differences, Book Fair, and the Burr Halloween event. As  a PTO board member she looks forward to continually support the educational programs at Burr and working with many wonderful PTO members.

If you have questions about any of these votes, or would like more information about the Burr PTO Board, please email us at:  pto-board@burrpto.org

Burr Playground Fundraising Update

The Burr Playground fundraising effort has been very successful this year, thanks to strong participation & contributions from the extended Burr community. We're on track to reach our $150K target amount, but we're not there yet! Here's an overview of where we are:
  • Target amount: $150K
  • Amount raised so far: $118K
  • Plan to close the remaining gap:
    • Buy-a-Brick: $12K
    • Move-a-Thon: $5K
    • Corporate Donations: $7K
    • Discounts on playground install (demolition & excavation): $10K

So far, nearly 40 playground bricks have been sold. Our goal is to sell 125-150 bricks. If you are planning to buy a brick, now is the time! Also, the Move-a-Thon is a terrific way to reach-out to grandparents, aunts/uncles & extended family so they can participate in helping this great cause for current & future Burr students. (Need a Move-a-Thon Sponsor Sheet? Click HERE.) Your continued support here is truly appreciated!

Burr Garden Classroom Update

We marched all 19 classrooms through the garden over the past two weeks--we are up and running!  Many thanks to the following parents for joining us:

Cherie Bosarge-Dutton, Barbara Brousal-Glaser, Tracy Carter, Gail Cole, Bill Doran, David Falkoff, Christine Gallivan, Sloane Goldhagen, Louisa Hunt, Jody Klein, Sophia Lazarides, Sinead McAuliffe, Jeff & Stephanie McNeil, Catherine Moore, Lisa Pagana, Francesca Petreyko, Hema Rao, Stacey Richard, Hussein Saouli, Chika Shinozaki, Lily Shu, Steven Sulewski, Donna Terwal, Maureen Vahey...and any others we may have missed on our sign-in sheet!

We are now looking for our annual team of Burr Family Garden Club Members to help us keep an eye on the garden and make sure it gets plenty of WATER throughout the weeks and months ahead.   The Burr garden is Auburndale's de facto community garden--other community gardens have waiting lists for plots and then you have to make a full commitment.  Here, you are the garden keeper for just one week and someone has already done all the hard planting work for you!

It's fun to splash around with the hose on those hot summer
days/evenings--we hope to have lots of signups for our Burr Family Garden Club!
  • We ask that families sign up for a one-week commitment (if we have lots of families volunteer, we'd love to have two families per week to share the load).
  • We need families beginning the week after Memorial Day Weekend right through mid-September.

Volunteers are needed for Recycle Sticker Project!

Green Decade Newton, in collaboration with Newton's Department of Public Works, is seeking numerous volunteers (16 years and older) to walk in pairs around Newton's neighborhoods, while adhering "recycling education stickers" onto all residential green bins in the spring and summer months.  Maps will be provided and the work will be conducted primarily during the morning hours. The "Recycle Sticker Project" will help remind all Newton residents of the items that may or may not be placed in our green bins. Funding for the stickers has been provided by Green Decade Newton, Whole Foods Markets Newton and Waste Management. The goal is to raise awareness about recycling, not only to benefit our environment, but also to reap substantial financial savings on the cost of disposing the City's trash.  Please contact HERE  to sign up.
