Burr Playground Fundraising: Plan to Reach Our  Target by 6/20/2014

Over the past few weeks, there has been a lot of extra focus on Burr Playground fundraising activities. When combined with all the other school-related activities and communications at this time of year, the Playground Committee recognizes people might be feeling a bit overwhelmed...! The good news is that we are on track to meet our fundraising target by June 20th, which would enable the new playground to be installed in Fall 2014 (exact date TBD). This is a year earlier than we thought was possible! For this to happen, we just need to reach our conservative goals for the remaining fundraising programs. Here are the goals we have set for these programs:
  • Buy-a-Brick : Our goal for this program is to sell 125-150 bricks. In an effort to extend beyond the current Burr community, we are actively contacting Burr alumni to see if they might be interested in contributing here. These bricks will be a great way for the extended Burr community to commemorate their role in making the new playground a reality.
  • Move-a-Thon (June 9) : Our goal for this program is for each child to raise at least $25 in donations. We are excited about this program, since it will help each student to feel involved with raising money for the new playground, while also encouraging activity and good health.
Overall, your continued support here is truly appreciated. Hopefully you can help us to make this final push to reach our fundraising goal now, so the new playground can be installed in Fall 2014!

Creative Arts and Sciences Welcomes
New England Aquarium
Tidepools Alive!
Tuesday, May 27th

The Tidepools Alive presentation for the Kindergarten classes is an informative and live presentation of sea life by the New England Aquarium. The presenters ask students to use their five senses to imagine the beach, tidepools and seagulls as they present sea stars, snails, mussels, clams and hermit crabs. They discuss each animal and their features. In the 2nd half of the presentation, they provide
a hands-on workshop with tanks of sea life for groups to observe and examine.

Creative Arts and Science programs are  fully funded by the Burr School PTO. Parents are welcome to attend but no younger siblings please. Thank you for your cooperation.

Time for the Burr Garden Classroom

Springtime at Burr...'tis the season for our beloved Burr Garden Classroom. If you enjoy gardening (or have always wanted to learn more about it!), we invite you to join us for some good old fashioned fun in the dirt n' sun.

Over these last weeks of May, every class at Burr will visit the classroom and plant a garden with a different "theme".  We're always looking for parents to assist in their kids' classes as they plant their gardens (especially in the younger grades--lots of little green thumbs require many helping hands on deck).  Please let Dana Hanson know if you think you might like to join us.  Younger siblings are welcome--please come a few moments before your child's class is scheduled.

Here are the tentative dates/times for our gardening sessions:

Tuesday, May 27

8:45 - 9:20 -- 3 Canning

9:30 - 10:05 -- 3 Collins

10:15 -- 10:50 -- 3 Lawton

11:00 - 11:35 -- 4 Robinson

10:50 - 12:25 -- 1 Espinal

Thursday, May 29

8:45 - 9:15 -- K Frail

9:15 - 9:45 -- 2 Roberts

If you can't make the planting sessions, but would like to join our Summertime Burr Family Garden Club, we'll be sending out weekly signups for that as school comes to a close--this is a flexible gig and you help out when it's convenient for your schedule--after work, on weekends, whenever...it's a great way to stay connected to Burr after school ends!  (The Burr garden is Auburndale's de facto community garden--other community gardens have waiting lists for plots and then you have to make a full commitment.  Here, you are the garden keeper for just one week and someone has already done all the hard planting work for you!)

Buy-A-Brick!

Buy A Brick!

As the school year winds down, the Burr Playground Project is getting closer to its fundraising goal. Buy a brick and help us reach the target so a much-needed new playground can be built this fall!

Consider becoming a permanent part of the playground by buying a brick that will become part of the landscaping design. A customized message will be engraved on each brick for a $100 donation. Order online at http://bricks.burrplayground.com

Interested in buying multiple bricks and getting a discount? Use the flyer that came home in your child's folder to order two bricks for $175 or three or more bricks for $75 per brick. The flyer can also be downloaded from the "Get Involved" page on http://burrplayground.com (The multiple brick discount is not available via online ordering.)

Thank you!

Newton Schools Foundation
Honor Thy Teacher

As the school year comes to an end, are you looking for a way to say "Thank You" to the people who make a difference at your children's schools? Every day, each of your children benefits from exceptional teachers and staff to educate, motivate and inspire them to be the best they can be.

While the impulse to thank teachers with a physical or monetary gift is a natural one, the Newton School Committee prohibits individual gifts to teachers and the State Ethics Commission limits the types and amounts of group gifts that teachers may receive.

Seventeen years ago, Newton Schools Foundation created a special campaign designed to enable parents to honor teachers by giving a gift in their name. Please consider donating to NSF's Annual "Honor Thy Teacher" Campaign to support teachers' efforts and honor their dedication to your children. You may also choose to honor a special education aide, a fine arts or music teacher, or a coach or counselor who has touched your child's life.  Suggested donation is $25 per teacher/staff member.

NSF celebrates Newton Public Schools teachers and staff by:
  • Notifying honored teachers and staff of your gift
  • Listing all honored teachers and staff in the Newton TAB
  • Sharing honoree names with the Superintendent and Principals.
There are three ways to donate:
  • PayPal through www.newtonschoolsfoundation.org where you can indicate your donation and honorees
  • Send a check to Newton Schools Foundation at 246 Dudley Road, Newton, MA 02459 and indicate your honorees
  • Call NSF at 617-559-6120
Teachers and staff who are honored consider this one of the highlights of their year.  Please help support our educators by donating today.
