The May Fair Needs You!

Saturday, May 10, 2014

We know it is a nutty time of year and there is so much going on at school and outside of school with spring sports, life and such.  However, we need many volunteers to make this event possible!

We are looking for helpers to run games, take tickets, supervise crafts, etc.  Please look at the list and pick a time slot that works for you!

Please sign up for shift now:

The Mayfair started in the 60's as a community building event led by some dedicated moms. Back then, it was a swap meet with some simple games and grill. It is still a fun community event.  We hope to make a little profit this year to donate to the Playground Fund so that we can have fun playing at Burr for years to come. During the event the winners of the auction and raffle items will be announced and the class gift baskets will be on display. So please stop by for an hour or two and lend a hand and let the kids play.

PLEASE consider signing up for more than one shift. All volunteers will be given free tickets as our way of saying thanks. Kids can help you run a game; they can collect the tickets with your assistance.

Dads: We need you too!!!  Please look at the Set up/ Clean up or Daddies on the Grill time slots.

Bakers: Adults and kids PLEASE bake goodies to be sold at the bake sale, bake a cake for the Cake Walk or find your inner cake boss and decorate a cake. The theme this year is Music.

If you have questions please contact Kelly Brown at kellyebrown@verizon.net or anyone on the committee.

Burr Red Sox Outing June 16!

Come celebrate the last week of school and the start of summer with a special Burr PTO outing to see defending World Series Champions the Red Sox!

We have reserved tickets for June 16 in the Grandstand, Sections 42 and 37.  Tickets are $25 each (these are less than the cost on the Red Sox site) plus a recommended tax deductible donation of $5 each to help fund the 5th Grade's Moving On events (so $30 total per ticket - still less than ordering online!). The $5 is tax deductible. Please limit requests to 6 per family. If you do want more, send us a note, and if we do not sell out, we will try to accommodate your request.

Payments are due by May 7 so we can place the order with the Red Sox special events office. Checks should be made out to 'BURR PTO'  with a note of how many tickets you are ordering, and placed into an envelope in your child's folder labeled '5TH GRADE RED SOX'. We will also have a box in the Burr office for drop offs.

Tickets are First Come, First Served.  Note that if fewer than 20 tickets are ordered, the event will be cancelled and your money returned.

If you have any questions, please contact Vicky Gifford at urgiff@gmail.com617 548 5636 or Jim Walsh at jim.walsh@mottmacinc.com.

THANK YOU ALL NEWTON SERVES HELPERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you so much to ALL the parents and children that came to school this past Sunday. It was so nice to see some familiar faces, some new ones and some alums! It takes many hands to keep this school looking nice. I would like to thank all of you for helping! In particular I would like to thank Stephanie and Tim Mamis for fixing the flower bed out front which included trips to Home Depot and home to use power tools and back. Their hard work behind the scenes for all these years will be sorely missed when Calvin "moves on" to Day Middle School this June. If you have a green thumb and want to take over" The Grounds Committee" (AKA Steph, Stephanie, S and Tim and Calvin and Piper) please contact Ms. Johal. I am sure that Steph would be happy to hand over the honey do list to you.

Many Thanks to the following:

Linda,Sloane & Corey Becker, Jean & Deanna Giglio, Amanda Thompson, Hailey Quatromini-Thompson, Amy & Leah Knapp, Sonja & Emma Pleynet, Nate, Sienna & Steve Reilly, Stacey, Ted & Sophia Richard, Kristen Herbert, John, Jenna & Kira Biebel, Kashif Rashid, Donna & Djaden Terwal, Bill, Denise, Nicholas and Evan Hoch, Mary Tara & Dylan Roth, Ted, Maureen and Aiden Vahey, and Alums from 2012 Burr Class Brian Bobby, Tim Brown, Nicholas Hoch, Corey Becker, and Andrew Ruttenberg. As well as Wil Brown, Daniel Salemme, & Nicholas Greblick. And any others I may have missed thank you too!!

I bet you have seen some of the work that was accomplished, if not take a walk around the school. Look at the BCAP garden area - it is a garden again no weeds! The "off the wall area" is clean and free of sand and broken glass! In fact ALL the stairs, paths and entryways where swept. So sorry Nurse I bet you will have less visitors this week for skinned knees! The garden classroom is cleaned out and ready for planting day. The front of the school looks fabulous!! Thanks to Steph and Tim and Steve and his cute crew.

Another special thanks to Bill, my prior co chair, for showing up with the whole family and brining reinforcements from Day Middle School. We love to see Alumni at Newton Serves!!

Thanks a Million!! Fondly, Your 2014 Newton Serves Coordinator Kelly Brown (kellyebrown@verizon.net)

Free Family Concert for Kids with Food Allergies

Free Family Concert on May 17 for Kids with Food Allergies

Singer-songwriter Kyle Dine will perform his entertaining and inspiring music about food allergies at a free family concert on Saturday, May 17 at noon at the West Suburban YMCA (276 Church St.) in Newton Corner, MA. There is no charge to attend and pre-registration is not required.

"Kyle incorporates both humor and important educational messages in his music," said Sharon Schumack, Director of Education for the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, New England Chapter, which is sponsoring the concert. "He makes it fun for children to learn what they need to do to stay safe, or help their friends with food allergies to stay safe."

The concert was arranged by AAFA New England Board Member Mark Uzzell of Natick, whose seven-year-old daughter is a huge fan of Kyle's. "He's like a rock star in our house," said Uzzell, who has also sponsored an educational assembly by Kyle at his daughter's school to help educate children with food allergies and their friends.

"It is important for everyone to understand the why children with allergies need to strictly avoid their allergenic foods and what to do in case of a severe reaction. That knowledge could help save a life someday," said Schumack. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, food allergies affect an estimated 4% to 6% of children; some estimates are up to 8% when younger children are included, some of whom "outgrow" their sensitivities by the time they reach school-age.

The free concert is kick-off the YMCA's annual "Healthy Kids Day." Everyone is invited to stay and participate in other events planned for the afternoon.

AAFA New England organizes educational support group programs throughout the region, publishes print and e- newsletters, and runs a telephone resource and referral line for people coping with allergies and asthma. For more information call (781) 444-7778 or see   www.asthmaandallergies.org
