A Note from the PTO Board

As many of you may have seen, in this article published in the Boston Globe (Boston Globe article), the Newton PTO's are spending a significant amount of money on technology in each school. Because fundraising for technology is done at the school level, not every school is able to fundraise equal amounts, and as a result technology funding from school to school can vary greatly causing inequity between schools within Newton. The PTO Council, a group that includes officers from each of the PTO's in the city, has proposed a "cap" in PTO spending for technology.  This cap would hopefully propel the city to invest more of their budget in technology as well as create a more equitable base on which each school is working toward the technology goals that have been established.

The PTO Council Board will be presenting the technology cap proposal to the Newton School Committee at an open meeting on April 7th so that School Committee can then review the proposal and discuss it among themselves.

The PTOC Board would like its members to vote a "yes" or "no" on their support toward the proposal by April 16th.  The Burr PTO Board would like input from our PTO Community here at Burr prior to voting.  If you have thoughts, feedback, or questions about the proposal (linked below), please email us at pto-board@burrpto.org or attend our PTO meeting this Tuesday at 7:00.

Mindfulness has been introduced in K-12 school systems nationwide; it has been shown to enhance motivation and focus, and to improve emotional and educational outcomes for students. Join us to hear from experts in the field as we explore the research, uses, and results of this practice. Sessions run on Thursdays May 1, 8, & 15 at Newton South High School from 7-9pm. The cost for individual talks is $35, with a discounted series price of $90. Call NCE at 617-559-6999 or visit www.newtoncommunityed.org for more information or to register. Newton Heartbreak Hill Road Race, April 19

The 22nd annual race - one mile, up and down famed Heartbreak Hill just two days before the Boston Marathon - takes place on Saturday, April 19 at Newton City Hall. Runners ages 8 - 90 compete against their own age and gender groups in organized heats from Noon - 3pm. Every runner receives a race medallion, goody bag, seedling tree, free pizza/pasta party ticket and an official digital clock time. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each race are awarded trophies. The first 500 registrants receive a free souvenir t-shirt.

Everyone can enjoy the face painting, pre-race warm-ups, games and great music, but the best of all...is the cheering and admiration of the crowds! Not a runner? Join in the family walk at 3pm. It's on the same course, and it's fun! For more information and registration, visit www.newtoncommunitypride.org or call 617-796-1540.

Newton Youth Players

If your child would like to be a part of an outstanding after-school youth theatre program, then Newton Youth Players could be the answer to their performing dreams! The casts are small, which gives every child an opportunity to feel they are an important part of the show. They sing, dance, make their own scenery, and wow their adoring public every time!

Great news! This summer we are extending the enrollment age group to include children going into 1st grade, because "Annie" is a wonderful play for younger children! Visit www.newtonyouthplayers.com for more information, and to enroll.

Spring 2014 - 'Oliver'  (now enrolling)

Summer 2014 - 'Annie' (now enrolling) (now including 1st grade!)

Fall 2014 -  'Annie Get Your Gun' (now enrolling)

Winter 2015 - 'Once Upon a Mattress' (now enrolling)

Spring 2015 - 'Annie' (enroll May 1: 7am)
