Writing Open House for Grades 3, 4, & 5

Parents of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders, are invited to visit their child's classroom between 8:15 and 8:45 AM on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 to see the work he/she is doing in writing. Students in all classrooms are engaged in learning how to write opinion or augmentative pieces. Teachers are teaching writing using a new program from Teachers College, New York. Your child will share what he/she has learned thus far.

Following the classroom visit, parents are invited to join Ms. Johal and Burr Literacy Specialist, Ms. Guttman, in the cafetorium to hear how the writing curriculum aligns with the Common Core State Standards and meets the needs of students at Burr.

On March 4th we will have a Writing Open House for students in grades K, 1 and 2.

Creative Arts and Sciences Welcomes
Native American Perspectives for 3rd Graders
In the Cafetorium on Friday, February 14th

We are excited to bring the third grade this program about the land,

the animals and the native peoples of North America. Using a tipi
as a classroom, Mr. Dan Cripps, dressed in clothing of the western
plains of the 1800s, will present a hands-on learning experience
about Native American history. Native American Perspectives
is neither an assembly program nor a stage show. Rather, it is an
interactive learning experience. Following the experience in the tipi,
the program will then continue in the classrooms.

The schedule will be as follows:

In the tipi in the Cafetorium

Ms. Collins 8:45am - 9:30am
Ms. Lawton 9:30am - 10:15am
Ms. Canning 10:15am -11am

In the Classroom
Ms. Collins 11:30am - 12pm
Ms. Lawton 12pm -  12:30pm
Ms. Canning 12:30pm - 1pm

Parents are welcome to attend, but no younger siblings please.
Thank you.

We are looking for volunteers who might be able to help host rooms and we'll have another planning meeting on Tuesday, March 4th at 7 pm in the Burr Library.  We'd love to identify volunteers to share the following cultures:

Argentina
Cambodia
Canada
England
France
Germany
Greece
Haiti
Iran
Israel
Italy
Russia
Trinidad
Vietnam

...or ANY OTHER culture!  (This is just a sampling of countries we've recently had in our festival, but do not yet have confirmed for this year.)  Please contact Dana Hanson if you are interested in learning more about sharing your culture at the Festival.

If you do not wish to host a room, but would like your child to march in the flag parade this year under a specific country, please contact  Ellen Chu by Tuesday March 11th so we can ensure that we have your country's flag ordered in time for the Festival.
