A Concert to Benefit the Burr Playground Fund!
This Wednesday, January 15 from 7-9pm
at the Luck Art Gallery in Auburndale

Doug Kwartler, Scott Marucci, and Jack Morefield - all Burr parents and Auburndale residents - are holding an original acoustic folk & rock concert in conjunction with the Bocca Bella Café and Bistro and the Luck Art Gallery as part of their "Jazz In Dale" concert series. The concert will take place on Wednesday, January 15 from 7-9pm at the Luck Art Gallery (right next to Bocca Bella) at 438 Lexington Street, Auburndale. Call Anthony at Bocca Bella for reservations at: 617 928-1200. There is a $15.00 entry charge. Concert goers get a 10% discount on their food bill as well. Henry Massar's Simple Machines

Science teacher Henry Massar will present Simple Machines to the 5th grade classes in the Cafetorium:
Ms. Moran's Class: 8:50am
Ms. Harris' Class: 10am
Ms. Cooley/O'Donnell's Class: 11:10
Retired science teacher Henry Massar engages students with an interactive presentation using everyday simple machines like scissors, seesaws and hedge clippers to illustrate the physics of how of how they work. In one of the demonstrations students lift an adult of the ground with the use of a lever.
Creative Arts and Science programs are fully funded by the Burr School PTO. Parents are welcome to attend, but no younger siblings please. Thank you for your cooperation.

Update on the Burr PTO's "2013 Holiday Season" Shopping Fundraisers |

This past holiday season, there were a few shopping-related Burr PTO fundraisers, and they were a big success! Here are the results:
- Burr Book Fair: $2,501
- Mike's Pastry Pie Sale: $1,267
- Amazon Click-Through: $1,227 (Nov/Dec only)
- Just Next Door Shopping Day: $235
In total, these holiday shopping programs earned $5,230 for Burr! Thanks very much for making these programs a success. Also, thanks to the Burr parent volunteers who made these programs happen, especially the program leads: Sarah Sian (Burr Book Fair), Justine Fialkosky (Mike's Pastry pie sale), Sharon Reilly (Amazon click-through) & Krista Busnach (Just Next Door shopping day) And, please continue using the Burr Amazon Shopping Link whenever you shop at Amazon - there's nothing to sign up for, no changes to your Amazon account. A beloved Burr school tradition that is such an extravaganza that we only hold it once every two years! Please mark your calendars now for the Burr World Cultures Festival on the afternoon of Saturday, March 22 (exact time TBD). Burr school families will work together to transform our school into a bustling international festival. In past years, we've had 25-30 different countries represented at the event--Burr has so much cultural pride and diversity and we look forward to working with our amazing community again this year to build another memorable festival!
It takes a Burr "global village" to make our festival happen! If you are from another country or your family continues to celebrate a tradition of your ancestors, we'll look forward to working with you in the upcoming months to make this year's festival a success! Winter Survival
In the Cafetorium for Kindergarten Classes

The Mass Audubon/Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary will present Winter Survival to:
Ms. Frail's Class: 8:45-9:30
Ms. Rudek's Class: 9:40-10:25
Ms. McMahon's Class: 10:35-11:20
Ms. Fitch's Class: 11:30-12:15
A Mass Audubon/Drumlin Farm educator will present the Audubon Ark Traveling Wildlife Program to Burr Kindergarteners. The classes will explore how winter is a challenging time for wildlife. Using wild animals, the Audubon teacher will discuss different coping mechanisms animals use and physical and behavioral adaptations that are helpful for survival. Migration, hibernation, and staying alive will be the focus. The woodchuck and kestrel will be featured in the program. The presenter will substitute another animal if they are not able to bring the woodchuck due to hibernation.

Volunteers Needed: Understanding Our Differences - Thursday, January 23

The Understanding Our Differences Program is looking for parent volunteers to help present an upcoming program at Burr. The goal of this citywide program is to increase information, understanding, and acceptance of people with disabilities and individual differences in our community. These programs are brought to Burr by parent volunteers and take place on Thursday afternoons from 12:45 - 3:00. The kids will be learning about learning disabilities. Volunteers do not need to have children in a specific grade, teaching experience, or a medical background. The next program at Burr School is:

Talking to Your Child About Their Disabilities

Dr. David Gotthelf, Coordinator for Therapeutic Services and Head School Psychologist, Dan Almeida,Coordinator for BCBA services and Miriam Kornitzer--Assistant principal for student services at Day Middle School, will lead a discussion of how to talk with your child about his or her disabilities. Topics will include the developmental readiness of kids to discuss and understand different issues, as well as parent communication of expectations and limit setting, sharing of feelings, and the use of resources such as therapists to help facilitate communication. The panel will be open to questions and shared experiences from parents. January 14, 2014 at 7:30 pm. in room 210 of the Education Center, 100 Walnut Street. Extended School Year (ESY) Summer Services

A special open board meeting has been scheduled for next week with Dr. Judy Levin-Charms, Paula Black and Maura Tynes to talk about Extended School Year (ESY) summer services for the 2014 summer season. We are doing this meeting now, instead of waiting for our scheduled March meeting, because many parents are making decisions about summer camp now and wanted to have questions answered about what NPS will offer. The results of the survey done last summer on the 2013 ESY services will also be discussed. The meeting will be held on January 16, 2014 from 9:30-10:30 am. in the Education Center, 100 Walnut Street, in room 217.

Newton North High School will be competing in Season 5 of High School Quiz Show, WGBH's award-winning single-elimination academic team competition for public high school students in Massachusetts. The Newton North Team would love to have Burr families in the studio audience during the taping to cheer them on!
