A New Playground at Burr School?
| | |
Did you know the current Burr School Playground structure is more than 10 years beyond its anticipated useful life? Would you like to see it replaced with a safer and more modern facility? A well designed playspace can have a significant impact in the quality of the health and educational experience for our students, families and community. Have an interest or some ideas of what a new playground should look like? Come to an informational meeting to hear about how you can help move the ball forward in making a new Playground at Burr School a reality.
When: Wednesday September 18th
Where: Burr School Cafetorium
Time: 7:00pm to 8:30pm
The Burr School Playground Committee is targeting a Fall 2014 installation date but this can only happen if you get involved! Questions? Contact Valerie Wastcoator Jason Wong

Understanding Our Differences needs parent volunteers!
| | |
The Understanding Our Differences Program is looking for parent volunteers to help present two upcoming programs at Burr. The goal of this citywide program is to increase information, understanding, and acceptance of people with disabilities and individual differences in our community. These programs are brought to Burr by parent volunteers and take place on Thursday afternoons from 12:45 - 3:00. Parents can leave at 2:15 or stay to see the guest speaker. Volunteers do not need to have children in a specific grade, teaching experience, or a medical background. The dates for the first two programs at Burr School are as follows: Autism Spectrum Disorder September 19, 2013 (5th Grade) Deafness & Hard of Hearing October 3, 2013 (3rd Grade) Can you help out? Contact Us:
Deanna Salemme: salemme@comcast.net
Kate Hoffman: katehoffman@gmail.com
UOD programs are a great way to volunteer at Burr without a big commitment - just pick one program, and a couple of hours of your time will make a difference!

Burr School Library Needs YOU!
| | |
This year's class library schedule is out! Please look for the flier to see if you can help during your child's library time every other week. It's a tremendous way to get to know your child's classmates while providing a MUCH-NEEDED service to our school! While parents check out and shelve, Ms. Mayer can be available to help our kids search for their "just right" books.
Training sessions with Ms. Mayer this Wednesday, September 18 from 8:30 to 9:30am and 2 to 3pm. If you can volunteer or have any questions, please email Emma Woodward. This is a great option for folks looking for a well-defined volunteer opportunity with a set schedule!

Thank you so much to everyone who volunteered to be a Room Parent! If you have signed-up, you'll be getting an email shortly with more information. Room Parents are still needed for the following classes:
- Ms. Frail (K)
- Ms. Rudek (K)
- Ms. Golden (1)
- Ms. Oh (4)
- Mr. Glode/Ms. Bracey (4)
- Ms. Cooley/Ms. O'Donnell (5)
What does a Room Parent do? Room Parents act as liasons and communicators between the teacher and the classroom parents. This does not mean you have to spend a lot of time in the classroom each week -- much of the "heavy lifting" is often done by email. Every teacher uses their Room Parents differently. Ideally, there are at least two per class. If you have been a Room Parent in the past, please volunteer again. And if you have never been a Room Parent, give it a try. It can be a great way to get to know your child's teacher better.
To volunteer, fill out the form that went home in your child's folder, or email Room Parent Coordinator Beth Viveiros ( bethnpaulv@comcast.net) with your name, your child/children's name(s), their grade/classroom, and your email/phone contact information. Any other questions? Email Beth and she'll be happy to fill in the blanks. Thank you!
Looking for a volunteer opportunity that will help you get to know other Burr parents? Being a Room Parent is a great way to get to know the other parents in the class while providing a valuable service to your child's teacher!

Gentle, small, quiet houseplant seeking new owner
| |
I have two black, plant killing thumbs. I am human RoundUp. I have a houseplant, a succulent of some sort, that has been alive for 50 or so years. My grandmother planted it and grew it until my mom was old enough to care for it. Then my mom helped it flourish until she gave it to me about a year ago. Now, after 50 years of brave and dignified life, this proud plant is dying. Throughout, this little plant has been good-natured and uncomplaining. I feel too bad to just dump it into someone's compost. That feels like a felony. Anyone want a sweet little houseplant? I'll give you my bottle of Miracle Grow, too. If you are interested, please email me at sarahQoneil@gmail.com
