Burr PTO Co-Presidents' Letter
|
| |
Dear Burr Community,
Congratulations to our new Board members and Thank you to those retiring...
Please join us in congratulating our newly elected PTO Board members, Jaye Schneider (Co-President), Judy O'Neil (Treasurer), and Greg Thompson (Fundraising Coordinator). We are excited to have their infusion of energy and vision of leadership on board and look forward to a seamless transition. Thank you to our "retiring" Board members Ted Vahey, Jessica Avery, Kim Susko, and Rachael McCarthy for their tireless efforts in sustaining and carrying out the PTO's mission here at Burr. The Board position of Secretary remains open. If you have an interest in helping to shape the framework by which the PTO helps support the Burr educational experience currently and in the future please consider joining the Burr PTO Board. A description of the secretary's role can be found here (http://burrpto.org/pto/).
A new Burr Playground?
The current playground here at Burr is approximately 10 years beyond its expected lifespan. While some repairs have been made over the last several years to extend its usefulness the time is quickly coming where it will need to replaced. As a preview of things to come we hope to ramp up an effort to explore replacing the aging playground by scheduling meetings early next fall to share ideas. If you have an interest in helping move the ball forward in making a new Burr playground a reality be on the lookout for further information as it becomes available here in the Bulletin. Questions? Contact Valerie Wastcoat (valerie@valeriewastcoat.com) or Jason Wong (jasonwong910@gmail.com).
Another School year coming to a close...
As we race to the end of the school year, we just wanted to pause and say thanks to all the Burr volunteers for their time and effort. Parent involvement in the school is a fundamental part of what makes the school community at Burr rich and fulfilling. Thank you too to all the Burr teachers and staff who have consoled, nurtured and educated our charges. It may sound like a cliche, but it truly does "take a village" to educate and raise our future leaders. Thank you, Thank You, Thank you!
We sincerely wish everyone a terrific summer break and hope to see most if not all at some point during the summer hiatus.
See you around The Burr,
Ted and Jason

Crazy Crayon Recycling

Why should we Recycle Crayons?
Ever wonder what happens to the 12 million crayons that are made in the US everyday? They usually end up in a land-fill. That's why the 5th Grade Green Team has joined with Crazy Crayons (http://www.crazycrayons.com/recycle_program.html) to recycle this valuable resource.
Starting Monday June 10th, please have your child bring in broken and unwanted crayons and drop them off at the beautiful recycling station inside the 2nd floor entrance or at a mini-station in the front office lobby.
The Green Team has spent the last month researching the life-cycle of crayons: 1) raw materials; 2) manufacturing; 3) logistics; 4) use; and 5) end-of-life. They have presented at All School Meeting in crayon outfits, and plan to take this program to other Newton schools and visit pre-K schools to collect broken and unused crayons. They are true leaders in our school, so let's support their efforts!
More than 12 Million Crayons are made in the U.S.-about 120,000 pounds!
That's 60 tons of crayons made EVERY DAY with petroleum based wax that eventually ends up in our landfills.

Summertime Burr Family Garden Club!
| |
Jessica Avery coordinates our summer Burr Watering Garden Club and is still looking for volunteer families.
This group of parents is vital to the long-term success of our garden. When the kids arrive in the fall and see 10 foot sunflowers, giant cantaloupes, and riotous flower beds, it's because of YOUR work. Please contact Jessica as soon as possible to sign up for a full or partial week this summer. We'll give you the simple directions you need to lend a hand. No green thumbs necessary!
We invite Burr families, friends, and neighbors to visit our garden regularly all summer long. Ask your children which garden they helped plant and try to visit it a few times over the growing season through the fall. The garden/playground area is a great place to see Burr friends--late afternoons and early evenings are a popular time and you'll likely run into some folks you know while visiting! Vegetables may be harvested during the summer as long as a child is with an adult (let's try to let the cantaloupes grow as big as we can, though!).
See you in the garden!

| Summer Water Safety Tips | |
Summer Water Safety! Surprising Misconceptions & Safety Tips
Did you know...
-
Drowning can be SILENT and quick. Most children DO NOT thrash around and yell for help when they are drowning, they just quietly sink.
-
About 88% of children who drown WERE under some form of supervision. Adults who were present at the time were often distracted (eating, on the phone, doing chores, reading, or chatting with others).
-
77 percent of the children who drowned had been seen 5 minutes or less before being missed and subsequently discovered in the water.
-
Even with a lifeguard present, drownings can still occur. You must watch your child! Lifeguards are NOT the main person responsible for supervising children in the water. The typical lifeguard-to-swimmer ratio at public swimming areas may be high.
-
Children can drown in as little as an inch or two of water. Be aware that shallow wading pools are an easily accessible hazard. Adults think the child is still inside the home, but has really gone outside and into the pool/water area. Empty wading pools immediately after use, store them upside down and out of children's reach. The same goes for tubs and large buckets. Cover and lock hot tubs/spas.
-
There are different levels (Graded 1-3) of life vests! Level 1 floats the best. Look for US Coast Guard & UL approved vests specific to your child's weight and have a snug (not loose) fit. Make sure it keeps the child afloat & really works.
-
Even life jackets DO NOT substitute the need for a competent adult actively supervising children. Children can still float face down and drown while wearing a life vests. Do not substitute air mattresses, or inflatable water wings & toys for approved life vests. For more life jacket info see Healthy Children.org http://www.healthychildren.org/English/safety-prevention/at-play/Pages/Life-Jackets-and-Life-Preservers.aspx

TIPS
-
Enroll your children in approved swimming lessons. But, DO NOT consider children "drown-proof" because they have had years of swimming lessons, can swim well or are with a "buddy".
-
NEVER leave a child unsupervised for even a moment that is in or near any water: pool or spa, tubs, lake or ocean.
-
Never leave an older child in charge of a younger child.
-
Fence in portable pools and encourage your neighbors to do the same. If you can't fence the pool, use smaller, easier to store portable pools. Then, empty the water ANY time you are not supervising the pool and turn it upside down or store it away.
-
Children may leave the home with adults believing the child is still inside. Install door and window alarms/locks that will alert you when someone leaves the house and enters any area that has water. Close up pet doors.
-
Don't let children who cannot swim use inflatable toys or air mattresses in water that is above their waist. Keep children at arms length.
Pool & Spa/Hot Tub Tips
-
PUT A FENCE COMPLETELY AROUND ALL POOLS. If the house serves as the fourth side of a fence surrounding a pool, install an alarm on the exit door to the yard and pool. For additional protection, install window guards on windows facing the pool. Learn the importance of why four sided isolation fencing completely separating the pool from the house and yard is best, & fence types that are and are not recommended (children can climb some chain link fences with loop openings that exceed 1¼ inches). Make sure pool gates open out from the pool and self close and self latch at a height that children can't reach. Remember to lock gates immediately after use. Consider alarms on the gate to alert you when someone opens the gate and surface wave alarms. Check specific local regulations on fencing. Please see: Consumer Product Safety Commission www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/pubs/pool.pdf and the American Academy of Pediatrics http://www.healthychildren.org Swimming Pool Safety
-
Protect your child from hazardous drain suction entrapment in pools, kiddie pools and spas/hot tubs. Familiarize yourself with The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act, use compliant Anti-Vortex Drain covers, know where the pump cut off switch is located, For more see http://www.poolsafely.gov/faqs/

Freelance Players Launches Theatre Troupe in Newton Corner
| |
The Freelance Players, a theater company dedicated to the production of original musical theater by young people for audiences of all ages, is launching a Newton Troupe this fall. The program is for children ages 8 to 12. Children with little or no acting experience are encouraged to audition. Vocal and acting technique, movement and dance training, improvisation and character development are all part of the rehearsal process. The Troupe will produce an original musical each session, with a production in January and one in May. As a current Troupe parent attests: "The Freelance Players do a wonderful job of giving kids more confidence. Through the art of theater, the staff challenges each child to take appropriate risks and then feel success. All the while, the kids think all they are doing is putting on a show! We love it!" The Newton Troupe will meet on Mondays, 3:30 to 5:45, at the Grace Church, 76 Eldredge Street Newton MA 02458
Children of all acting/singing abilities are encouraged to participate. Auditions will be held by appointment on September 9th at the church. To schedule an audition call Kippy Dewey, 617-232-1175. For more information visit www.freelanceplayers.org.
