Burr PTO Co-Presidents' Letter
Dear Burr Community,
Burr spring calendar picking up steam...
As many of you know (or are finding out for the first time) the final two months of the school year are typically a very busy time at Burr. The spring at Burr builds up into a whirlwind of activity as many classes celebrate all of the hard work that has been going on during the year in the form of Author's Breakfasts, spring concerts, and musicals. The break in the weather also brings out the opportunity for field trips (and chaperones!) as well as the annual Color Day festivities. The Burr PTO also coordinates our annual May Fair and Teacher's Appreciation week Breakfast as well as the Library Gift Book Sale.
If you suddenly find yourself feeling like there are more school related functions falling on top of one another then at any other time during the year....take a breath and realize its true! For those involved in spring sports this too adds a wrinkle to the scheduling matrix. While the calendar does become heavy it is also a wonderful time of year to see and celebrate with our kids how much they have grown over the course of just one year and how much they have accomplished with the help of the terrific staff here at Burr and of course at home with you.
So that you don't find yourself sufferring from burnout by the end of June we encourage everyone to please check with your individual teachers and the Burr Calendar at www.Burrpto.org for updated events and dates in an effort to effectively manage the many celebrations and activities. The pick-up in activity also coincides with an increase in the need for volunteers to help the many events run smoothly. Please consider helping out where and when you can as many hands will make light work for everyone!
Thank you...
...to Eileen Keane (Burr IT Specialist), Felecia Quesada (Burr librarian), and Chris Swerling (Director of library NPS) for providing a very informative presentation at the most recent PTO Meeting outlining how technology is being used here at Burr and suggestions on how parents and caregivers can help manage technology at home. The librarians updated us on how internet safety is being taught across the different grade levels and how it is constantly being updated as technology and applications change swiftly. If you were unable to attend the meeting, the slides from Eileen's presentation are available here...to David Herlihy and Tom Dallaire and their respective bands (The Frogs and Scattershot) for playing two terrific sets and rocking out at The Skellig Friday night. David, Tom (Burr fifth grade parents) and their bandmates graciously donated their time and talent to help raise funds for this year's Fifth grade class. Proceeds from 5th grade fundraising along with a contribution from the Burr PTO will pay for their Moving On Ceremony events, Yearbook, and class Tee-shirts as well as a class gift back to Burr. Thank you to Jean Giglio, Sandy Hamilton, Pam Mcvey, and Tracy Carter and all the rest of the parent volunteers who helped organize the event and or contributed items for raffles.
As a reminder, The Burr PTO is looking for new individuals to serve on its Board. Increasingly PTO involvement is not just a complementary component of a Burr education but a critical need. Helping to provide the tools and technology within the classrooms to educate our students as well as the swings and playground equipment for growing bodies to explore is increasingly falling on the shoulders of the PTO. If you have an interest in helping to shape the framework by which the PTO helps support the Burr educational experience currently and in the future please consider joining the Burr PTO Board. As a matter of practice the PTO Board rolls off half of its eight (8) members in each year and elects new members to fill those vacated roles. To this effect Board members are asked to serve for two years so that each year maintains a sense of continuity. This years openings include Treasurer, Secretary, Fundraising Coordinator, and Co-President. Descriptions of the roles and responsibilities can be found on the Burr PTO Website.
Parent involvement in the school is a fundamental part of what makes the school community at Burr rich and fulfilling. In the face of constrained district budgets and rapid student enrollment growth parent volunteer efforts are becoming increasingly critical to helping maintain the current excellent educational experience here at Burr.
Interested in volunteering or joining the Board? Have questions? Send us an e-mail at pto-board@burrpto.org
See you around The Burr,
Ted and Jason

Author of The Unbreakable Code
Winner of Governor of Arizona Award, Western Writers of America SPUR Award, and Smithsonian Notable Book for Children
Sara Hoagland Hunter is the author of nine books for children, including her awarding-winning picture book, The Unbreakable Code. This inspiring story of the Navajo Code Talkers of World War II is based on Ms. Hunter's extensive interviews with the Navajo war veterans, and chronicles the tale of the 29 brave men who invented the code that was never broken.
Ms. Hunter will speak with the students about her inspiration, research process, interviewing techniques, and the importance of diverse language and culture to our mainstream culture. Students will have a chance to share, through questions and answers, their own experiences with languages other than English, spoken at home or by friends and relatives, and if time permits, end with a code game, whereby the students translate their own names into Navajo code.
Ms. Hunter has written for Warner Bros., Nickelodeon, and Jim Henson Productions. Her award-winning adoption film, Born Journey, aired on cable stations nationwide. Ms. Hunter's two children's albums for Warner Bros., featuring the Baby Looney Tunes, air daily on the Cartoon Network.

27 George Street (near Centre and Cabot intersection), Newton
Bring a Plant/Take a Plant: Ferns creeping out of bounds? Hostas growing like weeds? Lily of the Valley taking over your yard? Now is the time to thin your garden. Don't put those Iris divisions into the compost bin. Trade them in! Use flower pots, milk cartons, coffee cans, yogurt tubs, even plastic bags to pot up your cast-offs. Labels would be nice. Early drop-offs are fine.
Exchanges are free, but please consider the donation box marked "Newton METCO Scholarship Fund". An annual project started by a Bigelow Middle School student, now at NNHS, to benefit his METCO classmates through the best of 'recycling'. Questions?
