The Burr Bookswap is finally here!
| |
This week only!!!!!
Send your gently-used K-5 books off to school every day,
in a bag clearly marked
with your student's name, grade and teacher.
In exchange, students get to choose books from various categories,
ranging from early readers to classics,
non-fiction to hobbies and sports.
Every year we have many books left over and this year all remaining books will be donated to the Garcia Family Library.
Collections will be taken every morning through Friday, April 5th.The book swap will be held on Tuesday, April 9th.
We also need plenty of help collecting and sorting books, and setting up, staffing and cleaning up after the swap. Please sign up to help out at if you have a few minutes to spare.
Your help will be greatly appreciated!

Approved New Traffic and Parking Regulations Coming Soon!
|
|
On March 28, the Newton Traffic Council voted unanimously to approve the first two items on the docket before them regarding the Burr School, making the entire school zone a "No U-Turn" area and creating a "N o Parking" area along the radius of the curve at the top of Washburn (near Orris). The third item - the problem of parked cars at the intersection of Pine and Washburn blocking school buses and emergency vehicles - did not require a vote as the Traffic Engineer can act administratively to remove parking within 50 feet of an intersection for safety reasons, and it was agreed unanimously that this was a safety issue. Thank you to all the Burr parents, staff, and neighbors who worked together on this issue to improve the safety around our school, and to our Aldermen Jay Harney, Amy Sangiolo, and Lenny Gentile for bringing this issue to the Traffic Council. An especially big Thank You! to Alderman Harney for notifying the neighbors and representing Burr and the neighborhood at the meeting! So, what does this mean for Burr? Signs will be going up soon. The "No U-Turn" regulation is self evident - it will now be illegal to make a U-turn in the school zone, and anyone making a U-turn can be ticketed by a police officer. (We ask that you continue to refrain from U-turns, 3-point turns, and turning in driveways even outside the immediate school zone during drop-off and pick-up times for the safety of our children and neighbors.) You can click HERE to view the exact location of the new "No Parking" areas on Washurn - please refrain from parking in these areas immediately. In recent months, there has been an increase in the number of people choosing to park in the "No Parking" areas on Pine St. near the Pine & Washburn intersection, in the Staff Lot, and even in the bus zone. A number of drivers have also been observed passing the stopped school bus while the red lights are flashing (fines start at $250 and drivers with two or more offenses can have their license revoked.) Please be aware that there will be an increased police presence at drop-off and pick-up to enforce ALL traffic and parking regulations, as signs and reminders do not seem to be enough. If you have any questions, please email SafeRoutes@burrpto.org or speak with Ms. Johal.

Newton Heartbreak Hill Road Race & Walk
| |
Spring is finally in the air, it's time to dust off those running shoes and join in the fun at the 21st annual Newton Heartbreak Hill Road Race & Walk.
The race takes place on Sunday, April 14 from 10:30am - 3:30pm, starting at Newton City Hall. It is half a mile up and down famed Heartbreak Hill, the day before the Boston Marathon. The race is sanctioned by USA Track & Field, NE; and all runners receive a t-shirt, seedling tree, race medal and official digital clock timing. The 1st, 2nd & 3rd place winners in each category receive a trophy. Of course, there is wild cheering, music, games and face painting and games with Lasell College students...and admiration all around!
The pre-race pasta/pizza party is a great way to start off the festivities, the day before the race on Saturday, April 13 at 5:30pm at Newton City Hall, War Memorial Auditorium. The dinner is hosted by Papa Gino's and Whole Foods Market, and is free to all registrants, and just $3 per person for family and guests. Not a runner? Join in the Family Walk at 3:00, or the shorter Inter-generational Walk around City Hall at 10:30am. Registration is easy, online
