Creative Arts and Sciences - Native American Perspectives - Friday, Feb. 15
The Creative Arts and Sciences Programming, a part of the Burr PTO, is proud to present Native American Perspectives in both the Cafetorium and the classrooms on Friday, February 15th.

In an interactive program, students enter a tipi set up in the Cafetorium that is filled with artifacts of Native American culture. Students are taught about the land, the animals, and the native people of North America.  They examine stereotypes such as looking at the terms "Indian" and "Native Americans."   The presentation continues in their classrooms with a half hour question and answer session.  Following are the times for this program:

In the tipi in the Cafetorium
Ms. Crowley 8:45am - 9:30am
Ms. Canning 9:30am - 10:15am
Ms. Lawton 10:15am-11am

In the Classroom
Ms. Crowley 11:30am - 12pm
Ms. Lawton 12pm - 12:30pm
Ms. Canning 12:30pm - 1pm

Parents of 3rd graders are invited to join their children at the scheduled presentations.

CASC is fully funded by the Burr PTO.

GUYS READ:
The Phantom Tollbooth,
Postponed until Mar. 6, 5:30pm
The GUYS Read book club has selected their next book.  They will be reading The Phantom Toolbooth by Norton Juster. In this classic book, Milo, a very bored little boy, gets an unusual package one day: a make-believe tollbooth. When he drives through it in his electric toy car, he is suddenly transported to the Lands Beyond, a fantastic world of imagination. On his way he meets Tock, the watchdog who joins him on his journey as well as the Humbug. The three hope to convince the Mathemagician to release the princesses. It is a fun and silly book. GUYS read will be rescheduling the meeting this week. This will allow for more guys to get the book and read it over vacation.  The next meeting will be Wednesday, March 6th at 5:30 in Mr. Gaita's room.
Happy Reading.

Share the Love of Walking During Newton's
Winter Walking Weeks!

Winter Walking Weeks
We invite you to Share the Love of Walking during Newton's Winter Walking Weeks, from now through February 14.  Winter is a wonderful time to experience getting to school the healthy way by walking, biking or riding the bus to school, and it's even more fun when you invite friends and neighbors to walk with you!  On  Valentine's Day (Thursday, February 14) all Newton elementary students who participate in Winter Walking Weeks can stop by the Health Office at their school to get a heart sticker from the school nurse!  Sponsored by the Newton Safe Routes to School Task Force and the City of Newton Health & Human Services Department.

Effective Strategies to Reduce Anxiety in Children - Wed., Feb. 13

Jessica Minahan, NPS will present the workshop

Effective Strategies To Reduce Anxiety In Children

7:30 to 9:00 PM
100 Walnut Street, Newtonville
Room 210

This workshop will teach participants about classroom and home interventions for children (in preschool through Grade 8) with anxiety and related behaviors. Rather than respond with punishment- and reward-based consequences, it is important for adults to understand children's challenges and teach them how to cope. This will allow children to improve their behavior by acquiring the necessary skills to make progress. Jessica Minahan, M.Ed, BCBA is a board certified behavior analyst, special educator and co-author of The Behavior Code:  A Practical Guide to Understanding and Teaching the Most Challenging Students, with Nancy Rappaport (www.jessicaminahan.com).

Newton Parent Advisory Council (NewtonPAC) for Special Education meetings are free and open to all people interested in learning more about special education.
