Letter from Ms. Johal
| |
Dear Burr Families,
There is lot going on at Burr School and many of you have been involved in either preparing for the events, or supporting your children as they have prepared for them. The cold weather has not slowed us down!
Temperatures in the single digits kept us indoo rs for several days last week. A lot of our children (and adults) need to get outside to recharge and refresh for focused teaching and learning, so I am hopeful that the coming weeks will allow us to bundle up and head outdoors. Thank you for sending your children in prepared for outdoor play.
This week is Science and Engineering Week at Burr. Visiting presenters are scheduled to go into classrooms and share their passion for science. The week is a time for us to shine the light on how science and engineering relate to our everyday lives, and to inspire and foster children's interest in them. Burr students love having their family members and friends come into school and the presentations are always well received by them. I would like to thank all of you who will be taking time out of your busy schedules to visit classrooms, and Joanne Kotz and Ted Vahey for their hard work planning and organizing the week. Events such as this enhance the educational experience of all our children and strengthen community connections.
Last week we had the Burr School Winter Concert. Fifth graders showed off their musical prowess on string, wind and percussion instruments and the Fifth Grade Chorus entertained us with a collection of songs illustrating the evolution of music through the ages. Our music teachers, Lauren Tenney, Ted DeColo, and Jeff O'Neil did a wonderful job helping the students prepare for the concert.
I would like to welcome several new staff members and student teachers that have joined us this term:
- Kata Giuliano is a behavior therapist and will be working in Ms. Roberts' second grade classroom.
- Alexandra D'Entremont will be working with students in Mr. Gaita's and Ms. Frail's classrooms as an inclusion aide.
- Lauren Swiercxynski is a co-op student from Northeastern. Lauren will provide classroom support and help with lunchtime supervision.
- Deanna Scott, Jodi Murray and Belinda Cresta-Devine are student teachers from Bridgewater State. Deanna will be working in Ms. Mc Mahon's classroom and Jodi will be in Ms. Fitch's classroom. They will be kindergarten for six weeks and then move to second grade for six weeks. In second grade they will work with Ms. Creeden and Ms. Roberts. Belinda will be in third grade with Ms. Canning.
We are very fortunate to have these aspiring teachers select Burr for their student teaching practicum, and fortunate also that our experienced teachers are so invested in mentoring them. Supervising student teachers can offer great benefits to a veteran teacher's professional growth as they discuss current best practice with their student teachers and reflect upon their own philosophy and teaching techniques. And of course, having additional adults in the classrooms is of great benefit to the students.
I look forward to seeing many of you at our next PTO meeting on February 5 where we will have Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Fleishman and School Committee members in atte ndance. They will share information about the future of Newton Schools and answer any question we may have. I am sure this meeting will be very informative and I encourage you to attend.
Sincerely,
Mindy

This 2-part workshop will teach simple, practical methods of setting limits and managing difficult behaviors. The focus will be on "1-2-3 Magic" a highly successful technique developed by Dr. Thomas Phelan. It is an approach that truly helps in reducing arguing, nagging and raising voices at home, making it possible for family members to have more fun together! It is worth it to attend even if you have already read the book and have tried implementing the technique.
( Please note: The technique is not recommended for children who are receiving ABA services.)

Space, Enrollment, and the Override
with Superintendent David Fleishman
and Members of the School Committee.
Please take this opportunity to hear directly from the school department about the pressing issues facing Burr and the Newton Public Schools, including enrollment growth, space issues, and the upcoming override vote on March 12. Mayor Setti Warren has proposed an override package that includes: the rehabilitation and expansion of several elementary schools; additional teachers to respond to enrollment growth; and improvements to streets, sidewalks, and public safety. This year's budget process and the proposed override will have a significant and very direct impact on Burr, due to our rapid enrollment growth (up 25% in the past 5 years) and critical space shortage. In fact, the School Committee has approved plans for an additional modular classroom and teacher for Burr for a projected fourth kindergarten class in September, but the approval is contingent on the passing of the override package.
We encourage and invite all stakeholders - not just those with school age children but all folks who care about and reside in Newton to become educated on the issues surrounding this special election vote in order to make an informed decision come March 12th. Please make every effort to join us for this important meeting. Child care - provided by Burr Alumni - is available in the Music Room. A small donation to defray the cost of the sitters is requested. Next Guys Read Book Club February 13th
|
|
The GUYS Read book club has selected their next book. They will be reading The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. In this classic book Milo, a very bored little boy, gets an unusual package one day: a make- believe tollbooth. When he drives through it in his electric toy car, he is suddenly transported to the Lands Beyond, a fantastic world of imagination. On his way he meets Tock, the watchdog who joins him on his journey as well as the Humbug. The three hope to convince the Mathemagician to release the princesses. It is a fun and silly book.
The next meeting will be Wednesday, February 13th at 5:30pm in Mr. Gaita's room. Happy Reading.

Gift for Burr to WRAP on January 30th!
| |
As we prepare to wrap our campaign at the end of the month, we'd like to express tremendous thanks to all of the families who have donated this year, providing much-needed financial support to Burr School. We also would like to encourage each family who has yet to donate to link to http://burrpto.org/gift-for-burr/
to make their final decision, or pledge, before January 30th.
Our "thank you" email, listing all named and anonymous donors, will be published in February. We have instances each year where families believe they have contributed-and then discover in the final communication that they have not! We encourage you to review your records now and confirm that you have received an electronic acknowledgement from the Gift for Burr campaign.
If not, please contact us at giftforburr@gmail.com

NNHS Theatre Ink presents
Translations
|
|
How important is language?
We take it for granted, but for some the ability to speak the language we know and love is not always an option. Brian Friel's drama Translations strikes at the heart of this concern as he looks back on 1833 Ireland and the decisions the Irish were forced to make under British Imperial rule. His characters are as real as they are timeless; their stories of struggling to survive in an oppressed state teach the true power and price of resistance. Directed by Mr. Tim Finnegan. February 6th ,7th ,8th , and 9th , at 7:30 pm in The
Little Theatre, Newton North High School 457 Walnut Street, Newtonvile, MA 02460. Tickets $7.00 or email Adam Brown
