Happy New Year from the Gift for Burr Committee!
A Gift for Burr Logo A huge thank you to the 171 families who are helping us maintain our PTO's critical support of Burr school.

If you are among the 148 families who have yet to contribute, please consider clicking here to make Gift for Burr part of your New Year's resolution. We simply cannot meet our $35,000 goal without your participation. Remember, every gift helps, no matter the size! Consider sending in a pledge and then paying at intervals that work best for your family. Also, if you have made a donation and have yet to receive an acknowledgment, please email giftforburr@gmail.com to let us know.
Thank you and Happy New Year!
Burr Composting in the News!

Compost at Burr Elementary in Auburndale has been feeding the Burr Garden for the last few years now-part of the Burr Loves our Planet (BLOP Friday's) initiative. Last year, the 5th Grade Leadership team successfully implemented composting with collection taking place in both the cafeteria and the classroom. Outreach and education were crucial elements. The 5th Grade Green Team started by giving informational overviews of recycling and composting in each classroom, and left behind a plant and a box of bags for students to collect their snack scraps in for daily delivery to the

compost bin located in the garden. The team then went on to volunteer in the cafeteria to help students better understand what could be recycled and composted. This year, the students have implemented a sustainable process to ensure that collection takes place all year long ...

Inclusive Schools Week Digital Quilt Project

It's ok to be different by Todd Parr As part of Inclusive Schools Week, the program director of Understanding Our Differences (and Burr parent), Maren Oslund visited every classroom at Burr and read the book "It's Ok to be Different" by Todd Parr. Classes then discussed how it is OK to appreciate and understand everyone's differences. The students were then instructed to create a quilt square that illustrated the idea "It's Ok to...."  Click on this link to see your child's drawing!     * To control the speed of the slideshow, click on "options" on the top right of the screen.

Save the Date! Burr International Potluck

Sunday, March 10 4:30-7:00 pm

Mark your calendars now to attend this celebration of the diversity at Burr!  Every two years, our Burr families gather together to share tasty entrees and desserts from many different countries, some international crafts and games, a participatory performance and more.  (In alternate years, we host the Burr World Cultures Festival in the classrooms at school--this popular "sister" event will be back in March 2014!)

The Burr International Potluck Dinner will be held at Newton North High School on Sunday, March 10th from 4:30-7:00.  The Burr Respect for Human Differences (RHD) Committee coordinates the event and is always looking for help.  If you'd like to become involved, please contact Dana Hanson at danakhanson@gmail.com or Ann Langenfeld at annlangenfeld@gmail.com.  We have a planning meeting for RHD this Thursday, January 17th at 3:30 pm in the Burr Library.  Feel free to drop by our meeting this week to learn more!

January is National Mentoring Month!
Think back to when you were a kid.  What kind of relationships did you have with adults (or wished you had)? Perhaps you had a coach, religious leader, teacher, family friend, parent, or sibling who you looked up to. Positive adult role models in the lives of youth can make all the difference in helping young people to be healthy and productive. Encouragement and support go a LONG way towards helping kids make good decisions that affect the rest of their lives. Many kids need more support from adults than they are able to get in school and at home.  By volunteering as a mentor, you are helping a young person not feel quite so alone in the world. Pay it forward and change someone's future!
