PTO Meeting: Tues. Nov. 27, 7pm-8:30pm
Please join us on Tuesday, November 27th from 7pm to 8:30pm in the Cafetorium for our next PTO meeting. The Book Fair will be open for shopping from 5pm-8pm, and all are welcome! Our guest speaker will be our very own literacy specialist, Kalpana Guttman. Topics to be covered include: the literacy curriculum at Burr and how it is adapting to the new common core, suggestions on how parents can help support the curriculum at home, the benefits of the Book Room and its role in supporting the students and teachers in teaching the literacy curriculum. There will also be a vote on a budget amendment to approve a new line item of $500 for the Book Room in this budget year. (The PTO is proposing this new line item to support the Book Room because it no longer has a source of funding through Newton Public Schools.) Babysitting services will be provided by Burr alumni in the Music Room. A small donation to defray the cost of the sitters is requested. Refreshments will be provided by our wonderful hospitality team. Remember, if you have a child attending Burr School, then you are already a member of the PTO! Hope to see you there!

School Committee Outreach Meeting Tues. Nov. 27, 6:15-7:15pm |
Members of the School Committee and School Administration have been visiting and meeting with PTOs and School Councils throughout the spring and fall of 2012. The purpose of the meetings has been to share information about current issues in the school district, and for parents and guardians to have the opportunity to ask questions and share comments or suggestions. It was pointed out to School Committee members that parents whose children attend out-of-district special education schools may not have had the opportunity to contribute to one of these meetings, since they may miss hearing about meetings located at neighborhood schools. Thus one meeting in this community outreach effort has been scheduled at a time immediately prior to a SpedPAC meeting. This meeting will be open to any parent/guardian of a child who is receiving special education services, either in-district or out-of-district. Superintendent David Fleishman is expected to be present at the meeting, which will take place from 6:15 PM until 7:15 PM, Tuesday November 27th, at the Education Center on 100 Walnut Street, Room 217 (Note this is a different room than the one usually used for evening PAC meetings.)
