Door County Buy Local, June 1

Door County Buy Local is holding their next business networking mixer on Wednesday, June 1st, 5:30-7pm at Seaquist Orchards Farm Market, 11482 Highway 42, Sister Bay. The event will feature a presentation by the Seaquist Family, telling "The Story of Seaquist Orchards," as well as tours of their facilities. The mixer will also provide time for an update about the status and activities of the Door County Buy Local program.
 
The networking event is open to anyone interested in learning more about the Buy Local initiative in Door County. Attendees are asked to make a $5 donation; refreshments and appetizers will be provided. To RSVP for this event by Friday, May 27th or if you have questions, please email bill@doorcountybusiness.com or call 920-743-3113 ext. 200. Buy Local Mixers will take a summer vacation after the June event and restart in the fall on Wednesday, November 2nd.

Industrial Park News

DCEDC assisted Pro Products, Inc. acquire from the City the adjacent 2.74 acre parcel to their new 40,000 sf facility on Neenah Street. They will be immediately constructing a new 5,625 sf warehouse building to replace warehouse space in the current building that will be converted to manufacturing production use.  

The Sturgeon Bay Industrial Park is now listed as a Gigabit business park in the state's database of available buildings and sites. The park is served by fiber from both Charter and Nsight.

Cadence Inc. will host a ribbon cutting for their new 62,000 sf facility at 1425 South Neenah Avenue on Tuesday, July 26 at 10am, followed by a plant tour and reception. The event coincides with the Virginia-based Cadence's Board of Directors meeting in Sturgeon Bay to see their newest plant.

Millennials
Jim Golembeski, Executive Director of the Bay Area Workforce Development Board, recently made a presentation on "Millennials in the Workplace," sponsored by the Women's Fund of Door County and hosted by Hatco. A copy of his entertaining and informative presentation is available online. 

Labor Data
The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) has several types of wage and labor market data reports that are available to all Wisconsin employers. These include Inflow and Outflow counts for workers moving from county-to-county for employment, as well as Occupation Snapshots and Maps for any specific job classification. Naletta Burr is the new WEDC Regional Economic Development Director for Door County and DCEDC can facilitate information requests from local employers seeking to improve their recruiting and retention efforts with this data.

Workforce Forum
On June 1st, DCEDC will be attending the Next Generation Workforce Forum at UW-Oshkosh, to learn about national, state and local workforce trends and opportunities that could benefit our area. 

Exempt Employees
The US Department of Labor recently released final regulations making changes governing overtime exemptions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The salary threshold for exempt employees will be changed to $913/week ($47,476 annually); this new threshold doubles the current salary threshold level and will make approximately 4.2 million currently exempt employees eligible for overtime pay later this year. All employers will have to comply with the changes made to the overtime regulations by December 1, 2016. For more information, visit the Society for Human Resource Management resource page.

NexGen Young Professionals (YP) Network
On June 9, NexGen Door County hosts a "Why YP?" Membership Mixer at the Brick Lot Pub (253 North 3rd Avenue, Sturgeon Bay), 6-8pm. Angela Damiani, President of Milwaukee's YP group Newaukee, will share her experiences forging Milwaukee's Millennial path and consider the exciting things that can happen in our community when we invest in OUR YP group! [Damiani will also be speaking to the DCEDC Workforce Taskforce at 1:30pm on June 9th.]

On June 28, Nex Gen will host a presentation by Lauren Brey, leadership student from the Wisconsin Farm Bureau, "Excitement in Agriculture; How Door County YPs Can Shape the Future." The event will be held at Schopf's Hilltop Dairy (5169 County Road I, Sturgeon Bay), 6-8pm. For both events. entry is free for NexGen members (food/drink not included); there is a $10 event fee for non-members.

DCEDC strongly encourages local businesses to support NexGen and their efforts to retain and help attract a future workforce. Business memberships in NexGen are available at either the $300 or $1,500 annual level, with a variety of benefits. 
Travel Green Wisconsin Workshop, June 8

On Wednesday, June 8, 5-6pm, at the Baileys Harbor Town Hall (2392 County Highway F), David Spiegelberg, Regional Tourism Specialist with the Wisconsin Department of Tourism, will return to Door County to encourage local business owners to join the ranks of Aldo Leopold and Gaylord Nelson and help lead Wisconsin into a sustainable future by becoming Travel Green Wisconsin Certified.

Travel Green Wisconsin is a voluntary, affordable certification that reviews, certifies, and recognizes tourism businesses that have made a commitment to continuously improve their operations in order to reduce their environmental impact. Tourism businesses of Door County are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this simple state program to help position our area as a premier travel destination with outstanding ecological resources and the willingness to safeguard those assets for generations to come. 
DKBEP Golf Outing, July 13 

DKBEP Golfers
The Door Kewaunee Business & Education Partnership (DKBEP) and the Door County Home Builders Association (DCHBA) are partnering together once again for their annual golf outing fundraiser at the Orchards Golf Course, on Wednesday, July 13th in Egg Harbor.
The 9th annual golf challenge is a 4-person scramble and includes golf, cart, gifts, lunch, dinner, hole contests and door prizes. 
 
Proceeds will benefit youth career awareness and talent development initiatives for DKBEP, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the DCHBA high school scholarship program.
 
Sister City Delegation, June 12-15

A Chinese delegation from our Sister City of Jingdezhen is coming to Door County June 12-15. The delegation includes the Jingdezhen Vice Mayor, Vice Secretary-General of the Municipal Work Office, Director of Tourism Development, Director of Environmental Protection, Deputy Director of Ceramic Industry Development and Deputy Director of Overseas Affairs. 

The delegation will be touring the County on Monday and Tuesday, June 13 and 14, with tentative plans to include a  ride on the Chicago Fire Boat and tours of several businesses. One of the objectives of the visit will be to explore the expansion of J-1 Visa Employment/Culture Exchange program, encouraging seasonal workers from China to become part of the Door County summer workforce. In October 2016, County Board Chair David Lienau will lead a Door County delegation to China to pursue a similar objective.

Financial Management for Non-Financial Managers                         
On Tuesday, July 19, the UW-GB  Supervisory Leadership Certificate Program  presents a seminar on Financial Management for Non-financial Managers
In this seminar, participants will learn basic financial management skills every business person should know. Emphasis is placed on the practical uses of financial information as a diagnostic tool to understand a company's health. Using real life examples and exercises, participants will learn simple and necessary skills they can immediately apply to their workplace.
 
Instructor Greg Gauthier has over 25 years of senior management experience in large, publicly traded and small, privately held companies. He was a small business owner for nearly ten years and has particular strengths in operations management and information systems, cash flow and profitability, and business turnaround.
