Sturgeon Bay Industrial Park

The City of Sturgeon Bay recently sold an additional lot in the Industrial Park to Murrock Yard Maintenance company, to facilitate the expansion of the business. The three-quarter-acre parcel is adjacent to Murrock's current building on Keel Court and will be the site for their new 7,000 square foot building, which will serve as a place to separate seasonal equipment and supplies when needed. The company also plans to increase employment by three jobs as a result of the facility expansion.

Bay Shipbuilding Christening

Bay Shipbuilding Company held a christening for the newly constructed tugboat Leigh Ann Moran and companion barge Mississippi recently in Sturgeon Bay.

A number of local dignitaries, including Sturgeon Bay Mayor Thad Birmingham and state Rep. Joel Kitchens, attended the event along with more than 500 Bay Ship employees. Paul Tregurtha, founder and chairman of Moran Towing Corp., gave the ceremony's opening address. Bay Shipbuilding has an additional tug and barge to complete for Moran.

Washington Island Ferry Line Turns 75

Local and state dignitaries gathered at Northport on September 25 to recognize the Washington Island Ferry Line for 75 years of service. DCEDC was among many other organizations, including the Door County Visitor Bureau, the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's Harbor Assistance Program, and the Wisconsin Department of Administration Division of Intergovernmental Relations, to read and present plagues, commendations and proclamations to the Ferry Line for providing safe and reliable round-trip service to the island community.

Tower Ordinance Approved

On September 29th, after vigorous and lengthy debate, the Door County Board of Supervisors voted 13-7 in favor of a new Communications Support Structure & Facilities Ordinance, which could hurt the ability of small companies to bring internet services to rural areas. The new ordinance creates a new chapter in County Zoning, affecting all 14 towns; the ordinance will not apply to the City of Sturgeon Bay or the Villages. In a separate item, they voted 19-1 to maintain the current $500 fee for new tower applications and class-1 collocations. DCEDC and many other individuals and organizations, including the Door County Board of Realtors and the Sevastopol School District, wrote letters, emails and made phone calls to County Board supervisors expressing their opposition to the proposed ordinance, which would make it more difficult for local residents and businesses to gain access to high-speed broadband servicesIt also appears that the ordinance has application requirements that go beyond state statutes which were designed to create a level playing field across the state.
