Award Nominations   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

DCEDC is currently soliciting nominations for the annual Door County Industry of the Year and Entrepreneur of the Year Awards. The awards celebrate businesses that help to create a positive business climate in Door County. The award winners will be announced at the Annual Meeting of the Door County Economic Development Corporation this spring. The date for the Annual Meeting will be announced shortly.

The Industry of the Year award recognizes a construction, service or manufacturing business that has made a substantial impact on the community and enjoyed significant accomplishments during the past year. The Entrepreneur of the Year Award celebrates those individuals who have taken the initiative to start and grow a successful small business in Door County.

Any Door County resident or business can nominate a business or entrepreneur; self-nominations are also encouraged. Nomination forms are available from DCEDC or on the Corporation website.  Nominations are due to DCEDC by Friday, February 27th, 2015.

Buy Local Mixers

Buy Local Logo

Door County Buy Local is holding their next business networking mixer on Wednesday, March 4th, 5:30-7pm at Portside Builders, 810 South Lansing Avenue, Sturgeon Bay.  The event will feature a presentation from Portside professionals who will speak about "The Building and Remodel Process."

The mixer will also provide time for an update about the status and activities of the Door County Buy Local program. These networking events are open to anyone interested in learning more about the Buy Local initiative in Door County. Attendees are asked to make a $5 donation to help defray costs, refreshments and appetizers will be provided. To RSVP or if you have questions, please email bill@doorcountybusiness.com or call 920-743-3113 ext. 203.

Recent Buy Local mixers have been highly successful events! The December mixer at the Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay had nearly 110 attendees. Sue Bushman was the winner of the Buy Local tree, with donations totaling more than $1300 from more than 30 businesses. The February event, featuring the premiere screening of the Sturgeon Bay episode of "Around The Corner with John McGivern" drew our largest crowd ever, with 300 attendees. The overflow crowd was so large that we had to have a second screening. Thanks to Third Avenue Playhouse for being so accommodating and to our many reception food and beverage donors.

Legislative Days 2015
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Door Kewaunee Legislative Days 2015 is pleased to invite local citizens to join us in our mission to call on every legislator in Madison this spring. The seventh biennial Legislative Days event is confirmed for Wednesday and Thursday, April 15-16. The purpose of Legislative Days is to educate state officials about Door and Kewaunee Counties, and to lobby for state action to help address local issues and concerns. This year's events are building directly on the success of prior Legislative Days events, which brought the specific concerns of the community directly to elected representatives and influential government appointees.
Door/Kewaunee Legislative Days 2015 registration is now open!
A volunteer committee is working to develop the 2015 legislative and state agency agenda topics and issues that will be presented in Madison. To provide input for the 2015 agenda, visit https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2015LegDays or contact Legislative Days Agenda Committee Chair, Rob Burke at 920-746-2260.
Showcase of Local Foods
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

One of the primary objectives of Door/Kewaunee Legislative Days is to foster strong relationships with legislators and state agencies. To this end, we host a reception and networking event with these groups at the end of our first day in Madison, Wednesday, April 15. We are asking businesses with Door/Kewaunee County grown, produced or processed food products to be a part of a showcase of Door and Kewaunee County foods for Legislative Days 2015. We will present our local food offerings at several stations that will be set up around the hotel ballroom during the event. If you are interested in learning more or possibly participating, please contact Paula Sullivan at 920-743-3113 x 202.

Main Street Makeover

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Businesses located in Sturgeon Bay - one of the 36 Wisconsin Main Street communities - have a chance to get a whole new look by entering the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation's first-ever Main Street Makeover contest.
Modeled after the popular reality TV show, the contest asks Wisconsin Main Street business owners to provide details on how their establishment could benefit from a "makeover" from the WEDC's Main Street staff. The winning business will receive personalized technical assistance and up to $10,000 to implement changes that could include interior and exterior design improvements, and marketing, business planning and merchandising assistance.
To enter the contest, businesses should visit www.InWisconsin.com/MainStreetMakeover and submit an application that includes photos of their existing store; information on the history, operations and plans for their business; and information on why their business should be selected for this award. The application deadline is March 20. For more information, interested businesses can also contact Pam Seiler with the Sturgeon Bay Visitor Center, coordinator of the Sturgeon Bay Main Street program.
Business Financing News
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The City of Sturgeon Bay recently provided Revolving Loan Fund program financing to Sonny's Pizzeria LLC to assist the company purchase equipment for their new location in the former Applebee's Building on the waterfront of Sturgeon Bay.

The new Door County Community Opportunity Investment Network (COIN) microloan program has approved their first two loans, providing assistance to Bearded Heart Coffee of Baileys Harbor and Colleen's Heritage Bakery in Ellison Bay.

DCEDC administers Revolving Loan Fund programs for the County of Door, City of Sturgeon Bay and DCEDC Board of Directors, providing low interest financing for new or expanding businesses. There are currently 25 active loans between the three revolving loan funds. The Door County Community Foundation established the COIN fund in 2014 to stimulate economic activity and opportunity in Door County; DCEDC administers that program as well.  Visit our Business Financing page to learn more about the Revolving Loan Fund and COIN programs.

Bay Shipbuilding

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DCEDC recently wrote a letter supporting the application by Fincantieri-Bay Shipbuilding Company for a Harbor Assistance Program grant from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. The proposed project is Phase II of a three phase project to improve the ship docking capacity in the South yard of the shipyard. Phase II includes new dock wall along Berth 2 and dredging of Berth 2 and 3. This investment will have a huge impact to Bay Shipbuilding and Door County by generating new direct shipyard jobs and indirect work for suppliers of materials and equipment.
DCEDC also wrote a letter to U.S. Senators Baldwin and Johnson, urging them to vote against a proposed bill amendment that would eliminate the U.S. construction requirements of the Jones Act. The Merchant Marine Act of 1920, also known as the Jones Act, provides for the promotion and maintenance of the American merchant marine. Among other purposes, the law requires that all goods transported by water between U.S. ports be carried on ships constructed in the United States. Nearly 100% of the new construction work at Bay Ship is Jones Act work. Repeal of the Jones Act would undo their growth and have a severe negative impact on the Door County and Wisconsin economy. Thankfully, the amendment failed to make the Senate floor.
Hatco Corporation
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As last year's winner of the Door County Industry of The Year award, Hatco Corporation was nominated by DCEDC for the regional Manufacturing Awards of Distinction, given by the Greater Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce. The company went on to win the prestigious award last November. On February 26th, Hatco will be in contention for the statewide Wisconsin Manufacturer of the Year award, at a black tie event in Milwaukee. Hatco is also celebrating their milestone 65th anniversary in 2015. Since 1950, Hatco has been a leader in creating innovative ideas for the foodservice industry.

Mind Trekkers

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Door/Kewaunee Business & Education Partnership and The Women's Fund of Door County are collaborating to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) awareness and provide area youth with a fun opportunity to experience STEM phenomena that they might not otherwise encounter. Mark your calendars on Saturday, April 11th for the first-ever Door/Kewaunee Science & Engineering Festival featuring Mind Trekkers!  The event will run at Southern Door High School from 9am-3pm and is free and open to the public.
Described as a "carnival of science," the event focuses on STEM experiments and gives students the opportunity to engage in over 100 hands-on activities that last between 30 seconds and 3 minutes. This event is fun for kids (big and little) of all ages! Kids/adults can participate in experiments like racing floating Legos, walking on water, and eating ice cream made with liquid nitrogen.
Entrepreneurial Training Course
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

DCEDC's fifteenth annual Entrepreneurial Training Program course in Door County began on January 26 with 17 students representing 12 businesses. The eight-week course will take those students through a step-by-step approach to writing a professional business plan. The best business plan that comes from the course will receive a $1200 cash award, sponsored by Associated Bank, Bank of Luxemburg, Baylake Bank and FirstMerit Bank. All course participants who submit their business plan on time at the end of the course are eligible to win the award. Look for the announcement of the winner this summer!
