Buy Local Business Mixers

Door County Buy Local is holding the first business networking mixer of 2014 tomorrow, Wednesday, February 5th, 5:30-7pm at Harbor Hardware, 7960 Highway 42, Egg Harbor. The event will feature a presentation by Steve Hamming of Harbor Hardware and Dale Reiser of Peninsula Building Systems entitled "Planning to Expand with Purpose," a living example of purposeful building expansion, including a discussion on expanding product offering and merchandising. Refreshments and appetizers will be provided, featuring tasty food from Sammi Rae's Homemade and beverages from Shipwrecked Restaurant & Brew Pub Inn.
The Wednesday, March 5 Buy Local mixer will be held at Glas Coffeehouse, 67 East Maple Street, Sturgeon Bay, sponsored by Cellcom, and will feature a program by Cathy Guilette of Relate Marketing on "LinkedIn Tips and Tricks." Both mixers will also provide time for an update about the status and activities of the Door County Buy Local program.

Award Nominations Now Open

DCEDC is currently soliciting nominations for the annual Door County Industry of the Year Award and the Door County Entrepreneur of the Year Award. The awards celebrate businesses that help to create a positive business climate in Door County. The award winners will be announced at the Annual Meeting of the Door County Economic Development Corporation this spring. The date for the Annual Meeting will be announced shortly.
The Industry of the Year award recognizes a construction, service or manufacturing business that has made a substantial impact on the community and enjoyed significant accomplishments during the past year. The Entrepreneur of the Year Award celebrates those individuals who have taken the initiative to start and grow a successful small business in Door County.
Any Door County resident or business can nominate a business or entrepreneur; self-nominations are also encouraged. Nomination forms are available from DCEDC or on the Corporation website. Nominations are due to DCEDC by Friday, February 21st, 2014.

The County of Door and the City of Sturgeon Bay recently provided Revolving Loan Fund program financing to three area businesses. Dancing Bear used the City loan fund to finance facilities improvements at their Sturgeon Bay retail shop. Wild Tomato is using the County loan fund to help finance equipment required for their new business in Sister Bay. The new owners of the former Ladderhouse restaurant used the City fund to finance the reopening of the restaurant this spring on Third Avenue in downtown Sturgeon Bay.
DCEDC administers Revolving Loan Fund programs for the County of Door, City of Sturgeon Bay and DCEDC Board of Directors, providing low interest financing for new or expanding businesses. Energy Training Scholarships

Sturgeon Bay Utilities offers scholarships to new and existing businesses in the areas of energy management, energy efficiency, and renewable energy. They have a partnership with Energy Center University and Focus on Energy to provide high-quality educational opportunities to their utility customers. Sturgeon Bay-based businesses looking for energy-related training should contact Melissa Moren, WPPI Energy Services Representative/Program Coordinator, 608-825-1761.

Award Winning Business Plan

Angela Lensch, artist and owner of the Angela Lensch Jewelry and Fine Art Gallery opening this spring in Egg Harbor, placed in the top four of the Northeast Wisconsin Business Plan Contest, winning a $1000 cash prize to help put her business plan into action. Angela was one of four regional finalists who participated in an elevator pitch final round on Friday, January 31. Lensch was also the winner of the local business plan competition that came from last year's Door County Entrepreneurial Training Program course, for which she received a $1000 cash award sponsored by Associated, Baylake and FirstMerit Banks. Congratulations, Angela!

DCEDC Board of Directors officers for 2014 were elected at our January Board meeting. Board officers for 2014 are: Chair - Dr. David Ward (Northstar Economics); Vice Chair - Mike Baudhuin (WireTech Fabricators and Door County Manufacturers Association); Treasurer - Leslie Gast (Baylake Bank and Sturgeon Bay Visitor Center); and Secretary - Bill Chaudoir (DCEDC).
We greatly appreciate all these individuals contribute to our organization.
