Global Progress to End Child Labour
Celebrating the World Day against Child Labour around the world

During the month of June, the ECLT Foundation and our implementing partners spoke out about ending child labour in supply chains, the theme of the 2016 World Day against Child Labour (WDACL).

The World Day is officially celebrated each year on June 12th, but events and virtual discussions took place all month.

More than 5,000 children, parents, community members and government officials joined ECLT partner organisations in celebrations in our project countries: Guatemala, Kyrgyzstan, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania and Uganda.

Additional events were held in Geneva and online, spreading the word on this year's theme: Child Labour in Supply Chains - It's everybody's business!

Creating a Blueprint to Eliminate Child Labour in Agriculture in Uganda

From May 17 to 19, over 120 stakeholders gathered in the Hoima District in Uganda to take part in a National Conference titled "Quality Education and Skills Development: A Sustainable Way of Eliminating Child Labour in Agriculture."

The conference was the official launch of the Hoima District Action Plan on Child Labour, a first of its kind not only in Uganda, but throughout the sub-Saharan region, outlining critical inter-sectoral commitments and actions needed at the district level to effectively address the root causes of child labour under the Ugandan National Action Plan to Eliminate the Worst Forms of Child Labour.

During the second day of the conference, participants came together to make specific commitments for the implementation of the District Action Plan.

UNGC Leaders Summit: What Progress is Being Made?

Sonia

I would like to share some impressions on the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit which took place in New York City at the end of June. The central theme of the meeting, Acting Responsibly and Finding Opportunities, was very fitting during this first year of implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set for 2030.

But, is 15 years enough time?   This was one of the questions raised - the answer is no.

But, much can be done through innovation, measuring impact, and continued growth in the ranks so that more businesses come to the table as partners towards reaching the SDGs.  The UNGC Leaders Summit presented concrete examples of ways we can all be pioneers toward SDG implementation.
Thank you for your support -

together we can make a better life for children in tobacco-growing communities!
