Hi Everybody,

As I write this, the sun is setting on Saskatchewan Library Week for 2015.  Wonderful things are happening across the Province, to engage people with libraries and to celebrate what we do.  I didn't enter the SLA Book Spine Poetry contest myself, for obvious reasons, but I had a lot of fun building a little poem all about libraries in Saskatchewan.
While I was digging through the stacks, I found some treasure.  Did you know that Max Braithwaite wrote a book in the 1980s about Saskatchewan libraries called Like Being a Millionaire? Finding it warmed the cockles of my little heart.  Libraries in Saskatchewan provide a lot of richness to the people who live here.  Or that's how I always feel when I load up on free stuff and take it home to read and watch and listen to. Education Institute Webinars:
November and December webinars are listed in the online calendar. The last session is in December. Watch for a new catalogue in the new year.  Thanks to all who participated in the recent Continuing Education Feedback survey and who have volunteered to offer webinars for the Education Institute, as well as to the Saskatchewan presenters who have participated this past term.

Conference 2016  "Cooperation Saskatchewan Style: 20 Years of Success"  planning is underway with the Call for Presenters going out this past week and the Exhibitor / Sponsorship Prospectus going out in the next couple of weeks.  We have had good response from volunteers and are currently recruiting Hospitality/Social committee members who will be looking at adding some local fun and prizes to the conference as well as helping with scouting locations for some events.  Contact Judy Nicholson - slaexdir@sasktel.net if you are interested or have questions.

Happy Hour - Mark your calendar, share the poster, invite colleagues and other library stakeholders.  Join Saskatchewan libraries for networking and socializing on November 5 from 5 pm to 7 pm at one of the 6 locations listed.  If you are not able to come, join the twitter feed at #sasklahh and check the posts to the  Saskatchewan Library Association facebook page.

  • celebrated a milestone in your community?
  • tried something new that is unique and exciting?
  • done something that you think more people need to hear about?
Tell us!
Fill out our story submission form and feel free to send us photos if available. Please keep in mind that the SLTA may share your stories on social media and on promotional materials.

New
SLA Website
The new SLA website is up and running hopefully with few glitches.  If you find a problem, please let us know so we can fix it.  You will find that some documents are not linked as they are still being updated to the latest version.  The Board and planning committee had discussed incorporating WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) and have decided to work with the developer during our next budget to incorporate these guidelines to provide a better web experience for our diverse audience.

Science Resource
NASA Space Place is a website dedicated to elementary school children with the goal of letting kids know that learning about science, technology, and space is fun and within their grasp. We are trying to introduce our website and program to international librarians! On our website, we have a section devoted to parents and educators, where they can find activities and resources to use in the classroom or at home. Many librarians also use this page as a resource.

Additionally, we are active on social media at the following links:

  • 3D printing is coming to the Regina Public Library system as it reaches out to the "maker" community.
In a budget report that went to City Hall this week, the library board says it has recently obtained two 3D printers. These are machines that can print solid objects, such as jewelry, toys and parts out of plastic resin.
The library says it's going to make one printer available to members of the public and use the other one for programming. The library says it wants to be a home to "makers" - an umbrella term that includes inventors, tinkerers and designers - so it's making space available and buying equipment.3D printers are a popular tool used by makers, so it makes sense to buy some of the machines, the report says. The library says it's also planning to make sound recording equipment available to the maker community. The full CBC story is here

Name: Elaina St. Onge
Title: Library Coordinator, Campion College Library
Professional career and activities: After completing my undergraduate degree at Luther College at the University of Regina, I decided to pursue a career as a librarian. I moved to Montreal, where I completed my Master's degree in Library and Information Studies at McGill in 2008, then an MA in English at Concordia in 2010. After that I returned to Regina to take a position with the federal government, and was thrilled to return to the U of R campus in 2013 for a year-long term in the Luther College Library.

Last summer I took on a new role as the Library Coordinator at the Campion College Library. Campion is a really positive and welcoming community on the U of R campus, and I love being able to visit classrooms to talk about library resources, and to work with students to help them develop their research strategies. It's a great feeling when you can help someone track down exactly the resource they need to help make their argument, and to know that because of that interaction they developed new skills as a researcher.

In my spare time: I'm sure it's no surprise that I spend a lot of my free time reading, but I also play tennis and recently began taking flute lessons. My husband and I also enjoy travelling, and were fortunate to be able to explore Italy last summer and England the year before.

Favorite books: Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, Middlemarch, Persuasion, A Prayer for Owen Meany, and anything written by Lucy Maud Montgomery.

I'm currently reading: I recently finished So You've Been Publicly Shamed and All the Light We Cannot See, and am re-reading The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.

Long-term career goals: I aim to continue my work in an academic environment, and especially working directly with students.

  • Evelyn Daniels will be retiring from SICC as of December 1st, 2015 after 32 years of service. The new librarian's name is Jessica Generoux.
