Ask Our Agronomist
Q: What can I do to reduce salt build-up from ice melt materials?
A: Northern regions are known for the accumulation of ice and snow. For safety reasons, it is common to apply ice melt materials to help reduce this accumulation. Salts can be the source of all or a portion of the ice melt materials. Over the course of a winter, the application of these materials can result in the buildup of a substantial amount of salts that can lead to damaged turf and landscape plants.
The BioPro line carries a product called Na-X, which is designed to help flush harmful salts from the soil. The calcium in Na-X will replace sodium (Na) on soil and organic particles. The sodium will combine with the chlorine left over from the Na-X and flush through the soil. Na-X is much faster reacting than gypsum, which is traditionally used to flush sodium.
For more information on Na-X refer to our web page by clicking here. The application rate for Na-X is 32 to 64 fluid ounces per 1,000 square feet (3.7 to 7.5 ml per square meter) and watered in with enough water to let it penetrate the entire root zone. The application may be split in half and applied 3 to 7 days apart.

On behalf of the team at Ecologel, I would like to wish everyone a happy New Year, and take this opportunity to thank all of you for your continued support of Ecologel and our products.
At Ecologel, we believe that technology creates the opportunity for sustainability without sacrifice. It is our mission to provide innovative products to help you maintain exceptional quality turf and ornamental horticulture, while promoting the responsible management of our natural resources. With your help, our environmentally friendly solutions for water conservation, plant nutrition, pond and lake management, dust control and anti-fungal coatings have continued to make a difference on both a national and international scale.
In 2014, we experienced multifaceted growth. We added two new representatives to our sales team and increased our internal staff for improved distributor support and customer service in expanding territories. We purchased a new facility, which will serve as a corporate research and development site to continue bringing new and improved technologies to the market. We've expanded distribution and formed relationships with other industry suppliers to provide you with combination products and improved application options.
As severe drought continues to plague the western United States, we are proud that our Hydretain products have helped homeowners, professional landscapers and golf course superintendents alike maintain their greenspaces with limited water availability. Through our 2014 Hydretain Photo Contest, we received great shots of product use for turf, trees, flowers, potted plants, seed germination and food producing agriculture. The winners will be highlighted in a special edition newsletter, which will be coming out soon.
Over the last few years we've seen a rise in the demand for environmentally friendly options for roadway dust suppression. In 2014, Geltrak received praise amongst the dirt track racing community, and gained international recognition for use to protect agricultural fields from adjacent mining dust contamination.
In other product news, our team has been working to update the catalog for our BioPro Product Line. The new full color catalog will be available soon. Beginning with our spring issue, each newsletter will include a product profile to help introduce you to the BioPro line as well as other Ecologel products.
In 2015, we also plan to update our Hydretain Advantage Program website. The new site is being designed to provide easier access to support materials including product videos, articles, literature, labels, SDS, tech bulletins and more. Additionally, we will include a marketing library for you to download logos, pictures, graphics, mailers, etc. for customized marketing needs. If you have not already done so, now is a great time to request your mailers for the upcoming spring season.
We appreciate all of our customers, professional applicators, distributors, and industry partners. We looking forward to continued growth with you in 2015, and we wish each of you a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!
Richard K. Irwin, President Ecologel Solutions, LLC.

Spring is a time when we hear the old saying "April showers bring May flowers," but how accurate is this old proverb? Are the rain showers received throughout the spring season adequate to allow new plantings and plants coming out of dormancy to quickly become established? Will these rains allow plants to become strong enough to withstand summer's heat and other stresses? Read on.

Spring Planting Insurance
Protecting Landscape Investments
By Jim Spindler
Spring is a time when we hear the old saying "April showers bring May flowers," but how accurate is this old proverb? Are the rain showers received throughout the spring season adequate to allow new plantings and plants coming out of dormancy to quickly become established? Will these rains allow plants to become strong enough to withstand summer's heat and other stresses? The news is full of stories of unusual weather, which can bring unexpected dry spells. We have become more aware that weather does not always follow average rainfall patterns. There are also places where the climate is dryer and the spring showers are never expected. Should a plant manager rely solely on Mother Nature for moisture? Will this provide enough moisture for newly seeded grass, planted flowers, new trees and shrubs, and crops to maximize performance? Will spring rains provide enough moisture for a quick break to winter dormancy so the landscape looks beautiful sooner and is ready for the stresses of summer? This is where Hydretain's hygroscopic humectant technology becomes an insurance policy for spring plant performance. Hydretain will maximize the utilization of moisture in the root zone, by condensing unavailable water vapor back to the liquid state for absorption by the roots. It will help the plants perform in those periods, long or short, when the rains fail to materialize. Hydretain will help prevent the plant from entering drought stress when it is still immature and just developing. Having moisture available when the plant needs it insures maximum plant performance. Another advantage to using Hydretain in the spring is the fact that it will not hold excess moisture in the root zone, or keep too much moisture around the roots that may promote root diseases. Hydretain remains dormant when the soil is saturated. It will not "activate" until after all the excess water has drained and air has entered the soil. To achieve the Hydretain "insurance" apply Hydretain, BioPro's H3O or Lesco's Moisture Manager to turf at 9 ounces per 1,000 square feet (3 gallons per acre) and follow the label directions regarding watering the product into the turf. For flowers, ornamentals, trees and shrubs mix the product with water at 2 ounces of product per gallon of water, and drench the plant root zone. Refer to the label or the Ecologel web site (www.ecologel.com) for more information.

The Hydretain Advantage
Successful Add-On - Happy Customers!
By Sarah Spatola

In September 2014, with the California drought lingering on, Max Todd began to fear that many of his customers might cancel their fall aeration service. "When we came upon the fall service, we were freaked because there had been a drought all summer. We were worried. What if many of our customers cancel their aerating service, what are we going to do?"
Max is the owner of Fairway Lawn Service, a company whose sole purpose has been to provide lawn aeration in the San Francisco Bay area since 1977. With the fear of cancellations on his mind, Max began searching for a water management solution to help keep his current customers. "With the drought, I was looking to do something for the customers to get them to save their lawns instead of letting them go, because some people had let their lawns go and not watered at all." Max recalled seeing information on Hydretain in the past, but was reluctant to use the liquid product in his program because of the need to water immediately following the application.
With a granular option now available, Hydretain once again caught Max's attention and he began seeking additional information. He researched the product, requested information from Ecologel, and spoke with local distributors. "We looked into it carefully before starting to use it because there is so much 'bunk' out there on the market." Max even asked a friend with PHD degrees in hydrology and biology to look into the product for him. Max's friend performed the powder demonstration for himself, and spent several days looking at it. "He called me back and told me that a 50% reduction in watering is not an excessive claim based on his experience as a scientist."
Finally convinced, Max began offering Moisture Manager, a private label of Hydretain sold exclusively through John Deere Landscapes. He sent information to his existing aeration customers, and began making phone calls a week before their scheduled service. Within four days Max sold $961 in Moisture Manager applications. Through October, November and the first week of December, Max ultimately sold 147 customers on the service, resulting in a 12% increase in gross profit for the fall season. In their first attempt to offer Moisture Manager, they were able to easily sell about half of the people they contacted, and many customers even signed up for a three-time application service for 2015.
To Max, the secret to selling Moisture Manager is simple. "All you have to do is ask. They are already your customer and they already trust you. Some customers said, 'We've been with you for years, and if you say that this is good stuff, then go ahead and do it.'" According to Max, it comes down to having a good relationship with your customers.
Initial success in selling is one thing, happy customers and a sustainable business model is another. To ensure that his customers were completely satisfied with the Moisture Manager service, Max began contacting them about a month after the product was applied. In total, they were able to reach 46 of the 147 customers who purchased the product. Of those, none cancelled or asked for a refund, and only two mentioned that they hadn't noticed a difference. For the most part, their lawns were green, and three customers reported green lawns without watering at all. "In three cases, people told me that they hadn't watered at all except for the initial watering in of the Moisture Manager," Max noted. "It had rained only once, maybe a ¼ of an inch." Max even had a few customers who called in to report that their neighbors had turned them in for watering too much because of the way their lawn looked after the Moisture Manager application.
For Fairway Lawn Service, the addition of Moisture Manager has provided a way to increase revenue while helping lawns survive the drought. According to Max, anyone in the industry should be able to sell Moisture Manager. "It is a reasonably priced product that works. Whether companies are mowing lawns, aerating lawns, or they provide a weed spray and fertilizing service, they should be able to sell it to their customers because everybody has the same needs to reduce the amount of water that they are using, save their landscaping, prevent fines and protect their property values. Those are the main things that I see that people are going to want regardless of who they are." Moving forward, Max has plans to expand his marketing of Moisture Manager. He has even formed a new business to focus on Moisture Manager applications, and plans to sell aerating service as an add-on, rather than the other way around.

Why Your Business Should be on Twitter
By Kiersten Spindler
We know that social media is a great way to keep in touch with family and friends, or to stay involved with what is happening around the world. However, as the reach of social media extends into the corporate world, taking advantage of it can be a great way to promote your business. In fact, according to a recent survey conducted by the Internet Advertising Bureau UK, nearly 80% of consumers would be more inclined to buy more often in the future because of a brand's presence on the internet.
While many may be familiar with Facebook, Twitter is often seen as strange when compared to this popular network. Restrictions of 140 characters and a constant stream of interaction may seem a bit challenging at first, but after you get the hang of it, you'll see that Twitter can be a valuable tool for your business. In fact, 34% of marketers use Twitter to successfully generate leads. So, how can you use Twitter to help promote your business?
1. The basics
On Twitter, the messages you send are called tweets. After tweets are composed, they are sent out to everyone who follows you. If you retweet someone's tweet, you are reposting or sharing that person's message. You also have the option of favoriting a person's tweet (consider it the Twitter version of liking a post). Another key feature of Twitter is hashtags, which utilizes the pound sign. Using hashtags (#Hydretain or #lawncare, for instance) helps to connect you with other people who may be using the same hashtag. This is a great way to find people with similar interests.
2. Not all content has to be original
It can be daunting if you think you need to be constantly generating new material to tweet. Relax - Retweeting other people or tweeting articles are both great ways to stay in touch with your followers. Retweeting helps to connect you with other Twitter users, drawing more attention to your own account. Tweeting online articles and referencing the source with a mention (@Ecologel, for example) similarly helps draw more attention to your page. In fact, many news websites now encourage online promotion of their articles by adding social media share widgets to their pages.
3. Be Yourself
All social media sites provide an opportunity to show a behind-the-scenes look at your company. Since 85% of followers feel more connected with a small business after following them, tweeting can be a great way to stay in touch with current customers while connecting with new ones. Tweet about your newest special or about a great accomplishment in your company. Is it the third anniversary of your company being in business? Share the news on Twitter! Many lawn care companies post pictures of their completed projects, including new plant installs, hardscape designs, or the results from product trials. Encourage followers to retweet your messages - it's virtual word of mouth advertising.
While Twitter may seem a bit daunting at first, it can be a great tool for your business. In fact, according to Social Media Today, 56% of customers say that they are more likely to recommend a business or brand after becoming a fan. It will take time to build your numbers and to find out what works for your company, but, in the long run, your page could become a valuable asset. Hop on Twitter to explore it for yourself. While you're there, check out our Ecologel Twitter page.
