News of the Week
From Dave's Desk...
Welcome!
Thank you for opening my weekly newsletter. I look forward to hearing from you, so please stay in touch!

Sincerely,
BIOTECHNOLOGY A LEADING INDUSTRY SECTOR
Life sciences alive and well

Upon my invitation and that of Supervisor Ron Roberts, a top executive presented the "State of the Life Sciences Industry" to the Board of Supervisors at our Tuesday meeting.

Joe Panetta, president and CEO of Biocom, told us that the industry is alive and well in San Diego County and is responsible for nearly 60,000 jobs.

The industry encompasses biopharmaceuticals, biofuels, research and education and medical devices, he said. It is known for employing a highly-skilled and well-paid workforce.

In addition to creating jobs, the life sciences sector draws positive, international attention to the region.

In his remarks, Mr. Panetta often referred to Biocom's 2013 Southern California Economic Impact report, which can be found here.

FOREIGN STUDENT-PILOTS MUST COMPLETE BACKGROUND CHECK
Certification requirement for flight schools

Flight schools and flight instructors at County-owned airports must show that all foreign students have completed federal background checks, my colleagues and I agreed on Wednesday.

The federal government has legal authority over aviation in the United States and requires any flight student who is not a citizen to undergo background checks before training can begin.

Federal officials, however, remain concerned about gaps in the background-check system.

The County's ordinance, which is scheduled for a second reading Feb. 26, requires that flight schools and instructors sign a form every year to state their compliance with the federal background-check law.

Fourteen private flight schools and nearly 1,200 aviation instructors work at County-operated airports.

Support for statewide bag ban

State Sen. Alex Padilla is advancing legislation to ban single-use plastic bags -- the scourge of our watersheds and marine environments. On Friday, I mailed a support letter to him.

In 2008, as a Solana Beach City Council member, I voted to enact the first such ban in the county.

We can change our habits and we can greatly reduce this major pollution source. And thank you, Senator Padilla, for your efforts.

Healthy planet heroes

I was honored to be named as a Healthy Planet Hero, and so were  Betty Yee of the state Board of Equalization, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria and San Diego school board President Kevin Beiser (above).

But the real hero of Saturday night's reception was Max Guinn (right), founder of the Kids Eco Club.
Getting our kook on
Thousands of participants "got their kook on" Sunday morning during the Cardiff Kook Run, where my kids and I participated and I had the privilege of sounding the starting bell.

Joggers donned hilarious costumes. Just look at the get-ups sported above by these participants from Arizona.

My accessories included a front-pack with little Manny and pink-sweatered Natalee on my shoulders.

My son Robert, left, is a real trooper and joined the fun on Sunday.
Supporting Becky's House

Little Manny and I spoke with fellow Lions during an event to collect clothing for YWCA's Becky's House.

Rapping with wrapper

What a treat to meet the artist Christo during a Friday-night reception at the Museum of Contemporary Art La Jolla.

Christo is famous for his large-scale, environmental works. In some of them, the artist has wrapped entire buildings and bridges in fabric.
Welcome, Windemere!

The Rancho Bernardo Business Association rolled out the welcome mat this week for Windermere Real Estate, which opened new offices on Bernardo Center Drive.

I was pleased to help cut the ribbon.

That's a wrap

Thanks so much to Bob Hampton and Rob Appel of sdtheatrereviews.com for presenting me with a Champion of the Arts quilt.

The unexpected recognition came in response to my support for the arts.

Did you know that Monday was National Frozen Yogurt Day?

Some of my kids and I recognized the occasion with a visit to Yogurtland Del Mar.

Soaring Eagles

I'm so proud of these young men from Solana Beach Troop 782, who participated in an Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Saturday. The scout on the right is my son, Robert. Congrats to all!

THE BEST IDEALS OF PUBLIC SERVICE

Richard Wheelock Jr. accepted a proclamation to recognize his father's many contributions to the community.

Through the years, Dr. G. Richard Wheelock no longer leaves his home, but through the years has cared for thousands of patients and opened medical and dental clinics for low-income residents of the Eden Gardens community of Solana Beach.

He also completed numerous projects as a member of Del Mar Rotary Club. Thank you, Dr. Wheelock!
