State regulators are not protecting Cape Cod Bay from Entergy's destructive operations at Pilgrim. Our environmental laws should be enforced so that Entergy's operations don't continue to destroy marine life in the bay.
Our Mission:
Cape Cod Bay Watch is dedicated to protecting the species, habitats, and health of Cape Cod Bay.
Action Alert: Take Action to Tell the NRC that the Environmental Impacts of Entergy's Nuclear Waste Storage on Cape Cod Bay Must be Fully Evaluated!

Dear Friends:

You can make a difference about how dangerous nuclear waste is stored at Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station! Even a few minutes of your time will make a difference! Read more to find out how and why!

Entergy is now storing 3,279 "fuel assemblies" in a pool of water that was built for 880. This overcrowded "wet storage" is dangerous!  There is no permanent place to put this nuclear waste - so it is going to be sitting in our backyard indefinitely. There is an important public process starting NOW at the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) that will affect the storage of this nuclear waste over the next few decades. We need to participate in this process!

When Pilgrim started operating in 1972, the nuclear waste was supposed to be sent to a permanent, long-term storage dump. But today, 40 years later, there is no such dump -- Yucca Mountain is now cancelled. So, we are stuck with Entergy's nuclear waste indefinitely!

The first NRC hearings are happening on Dec. 5 and 6. The process will continue for at least 2 more years. The NRC is figuring out the "scope" of the environmental study (EIS) required for assessing the impacts of, and alternatives to, storing nuclear waste for the next few decades at sites like Pilgrim.

We need to participate in the process to let the NRC know they should look at things like: risks to our Sole Source Aquifer, pollution of Cape Cod Bay, impacts of rising sea levels and hurricanes, and more.

Action Alert from Pilgrim Watch
To Filter or Not to Filter Pilgrim's Vent That is the Question with Only One Sane Answer

Action To Take: Contact the NRC Commissioners and Ask Your Elected Officials To Do Likewise

Why: The Commission soon will decide whether to require filters in reactors designed like Pilgrim on the vent from the primary containment where the largest amount of radioactivity will be released in a severe accident. Filters are available, tested, and in place at reactors around the world. The NRC Technical Staff says "Yes." Industry says "No." What do you say?

Action: Email your request to the Commissions Executive Secretary at [email protected]. Either create your own message or simply say that you wish to sign on to the attached,

Cape Cod Bay Watch with MIT Center for Civic Media

Pine duBois and Karen Vale recently spoke with the MIT Center for Civic Media about our ongoing work to see Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station forced to comply with the Clean Water Act. They shared some startling facts, including that we have lost tens of thousands of smelt in the Jones River and the number of species near Pilgrim which are now federally protected. Click here to watch

duBois is a partner at Cape Cod Bay Watch, executive director of the Jones River Watershed Association and an active member of the Pilgrim Coalition. Vale is the campaign coordinator at Cape Cod Bay Watch.

Note: As we were wrapping up our newsletter last night, we noticed on our computers there were some technical difficulties with the video link. We're not sure if the problem was limited to our Internet connection. But if it is not working when we send the newsletter, we will include the link in our next newsletter and on our Facebook page Friday.

Entergy's Pilgrim Nuclear Named to the
Dirty Dozen Report of New England's Worst Polluters
   Dirty Dozen
On Tuesday, the Toxics Action Center announced its annual "Dirty Dozen" list of top polluters. Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station, which is operated by Entergy, made the list again, along with the company's Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant. The list was announced at Brayton Point Power Station in Somerset, shown above.

Also shown are members of the Pilgrim Coalition, including (third in from left) Pine duBois, David Agnew, Bill Maurer and on the far right is Sylvia Broude, executive director of the Toxics Action Center.

Thanks for the Plymouth Thanksgiving Parade!
Thanksgiving Parade Did you come out and see us at the Plymouth Thanksgiving Parade? We were outside our new 58C Main St. office and had a great time, met so many nice people. Thanks to those of you who signed our petition. Your signature will help show state officials the public feels strongly: We want the Clean Water Act enforced at Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station. We want to protect our Bay! As for us, we hope to see you all again next year! Shown are Pine duBois, Janet Azarovitz and Bill Maurer.
