Official Dedication of the Christiansted Bypass
|
This is a beautiful time for St Croix. The Bypass project demonstrates what commitment and tenacity can do for our island. I applaud the administration for opening the bypass before the scheduled open date in an effort to ease some of the burdens of Christiansted Traffic.
I would like to encourage everyone to do our part in keeping the bypass - and our island - clean for the enjoyment of citizens and visitors alike.

Senator Buckley Adopts Evelyn M. Williams School

Senator Buckley with Asst. Principal Yves Abraham
|
One of my top priorities is my continuing dedication to improving our public education system. My Senate office has adopted Evelyn M. Williams Elementary School. We toured the campus last week with acting Principal Yves Abraham and discussed the school's initial needs. I will also be attending tonight's PTA meeting to introduce myself to school parents and listen to their concerns. We will be posting a wish list of needed equipment and supplies on my website shortly and encourage members of the community to view the list and coordinate the donation of items through our office. We will continue to update you on other initiatives and work that we plan to do with the school - the whole office is quite excited about this project!

Meetings & Conferences
As mentioned the past few weeks have been quite a flurry of activity. I've been attending as many informational sessions related to my committee positions as possible in order to better inform myself on related issues. Two of the conferences that I have attended in the past weeks have been a Focus Group on St. Croix Non Profits and Non Government Agencies (NGOs), and a roundtable discussion of Senators and local government officials "Keeping the Lights on: A Forum on Renewable Energy Policy and Financing" at the Caribbean Green Technology Center (CGTC) at the UVI St. Thomas Campus.
The Focus Group included a diverse group of local non-profits and NGOs, many of which I was unfamiliar with but pleasantly surprised to learn about. During the session, discussions included better ways to work together on funding, resources and overlaps or gaps in services. Stay tuned to our website for a listing of these organizations and what services they provide.
The meeting at the CGTC was especially informative and included discussions by Karl Knight, Director of the Virgin Islands Energy Office and Hugo Hodge, Director of the Water and Power Authority (WAPA) as well as several consultants. I was encouraged to learn about the actions being made to bring the Territory greater access to alternative energy and conservation technology and resources. Look for more information on those efforts in upcoming newsletters.
