Amazing Grace

The Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry is truly an amazing place.

Firstly, the children in Religious Exploration collected and sorted 68 bags of Thanksgiving foods.  The sound could not have been sweeter in Fellowship Hall that day with many hands sorting stuffing from gravy, veggies from dessert, etc.  Thanks to all who donated food to fill those bags.

Then some of the regular travelers went to the Worcester County Food Bank to transport 3,160 lbs. of food.  There were canned goods, dry goods, cereal, peanut butter and meat.  But most of all, there were those marvelous Thanksgiving vegetables; sweet potatoes, carrots, two kinds of squash, apples and potatoes.  This is the food that nourishes and saves the folks who visit the Pantry.

Next, there were at least 20 people who helped count, stack and sort those same foods in what I like to say is "organized chaos".  That they managed to do that chore in an hour and a half was a miracle in itself.

And then, we distributed that food to 76 families.  There were hugs all around.  We are a place where, indeed, the inherent worth and dignity of each human being is a value we uphold.

But, if you haven't heard me tell it yet, there was one woman we will never forget.  She had had some teeth removed just last week and surgery performed on her wrist.  She was weak from the surgery and had only had applesauce to eat that morning.  Feeling poorly, she came to the distribution anyway because she simply needed the food we offer.  Rev. Payson attended to her medical needs, her daughter began to get her food and as she felt stronger, she began to select some of the food herself.

By the time she was ready to leave she gave us something we will never forget.  She began to sing "Amazing Grace".  There are no words to describe her singing.  Her singing was strong and true.  Betsy Wood and I were hugging her and crying.  It is a moment I will never forget and one for which I am profoundly grateful.  I pass it on to you this day as a reminder that what you do to support this ministry, in whatever way, is important.  This woman was profoundly grateful for what she had received.

President's Statement for the Annual Meeting 2016

For this week's Nugget article I am publishing the President's Statement from last year's  Annual Meeting, so that those who did not attend the meeting can read the statement.

Happy Thanksgiving!

President's Statement for the Annual Meeting 2016

This church year has been another great one at the UUCW. I want to thank all our staff and volunteers for making our church an energetic and dynamic place that continues to improve many people's lives. Our church finds itself again having to make budget cuts and take extra money out of our investment account to balance our budget. The financial news this year has been a mix of good and bad, but there are a lot of reasons to be confident that our church can adapt to be a source of hope and justice for our community for many years to come.

One very good thing that happened to our church this year is that Roberta Mawdsley left our church an incredibly generous gift of almost $264,000. This bequest will guarantee that Bobbie will have a lasting impact on our beloved UUCW community and will enable the church to do many things, but the church needs more funds each year than this gift can provide. Bobbie's gift was put into the UUCW investment account. Ideally, the board would take only 5% of this money every year so that the funds should last for many years. Five percent of $264,000 is $13,200, which is much less than our total projected budget for next year of approximately $276,000. The biggest source of our church income comes from pledges, which make up about 65% of our total income. I am telling you these financial facts not to minimize Bobbie's incredible bestowal but to make sure everyone understand that it takes all of our generosity to keep our wonderful church community running year to year.

For a few years now our church has been having to take extra money out of our investment account to cover deficits in our yearly budget. Recently there has been some good financial news such as a Bobbie's incredible gift, 11 new pledges this year and a very successful pledge surge last year. Despite these financial successes, our overall projected income for next church year is less than it was this year. The majority of this lost income was due to the fact that some of our most generous pledgers not being able to pledge this year. These donors either moved out of the Worcester area or experienced changes to their finances preventing them from donating to the church next year. The church also lost significant income due to the fact that the Auction and the Gourmet Dinner did not happen this year as planned.. The volunteers who usually lead these fundraisers were unable to run the fundraisers this year.

While the church is again running a projected deficit, I am confident we can improve our finances and be successful for many years to come. One reason for this confidence is that we are lucky enough to  have extremely talented and dedicated staff and lay leaders. These leaders continue to work hard at coming up with many great ideas to strengthen our church's finances. The new Policy Governance system gives our church leaders a powerful way of experimenting with new ideas to figure out which ones help our church to grow stronger. Under the new governance structure, each year the board set goals for Aaron (as our chief executive) to try and make certain improvements in how our church is run. At the end of the year the board evaluates how well Aaron has achieved these goals  and also how much these changes have improved the congregation. This system of setting goals, implementing them through a year and then analyzing what is working or not working is a very powerful way to figure out how to improve our congregation.

Another reason I am confident our church will succeed is that we have been willing to adapt and try new things. To keep our congregation relevant and effective we have to be willing to innovate.. Sometimes these new things work, and sometimes they don't, but if we all keep working together I know we will be able to figure out ways to keep our church going strong.
