Headline News - Loaves And Fishes Food Pantry Hosts U.S. Representative Jim McGovern

For over 21 years the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry has been serving clients in our area who are struggling to meet their most basic need - their need for food.  And, for as long as he has been in Congress, U.S. Representative Jim McGovern has been advocating for the hungry.  He is the foremost advocate in Washington for those who are food insecure and we are so lucky that he lives in our own backyard.

On Saturday, August 20th, Representative McGovern joined the many volunteers at the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry to help serve our clients.   Our "organizational circle" formed and he donned our familiar t-shirt.  Volunteers were smiling as they distributed food.  Congressman McGovern, and his aide Kelly Surrette, were in the kitchen helping Denise  Darrigrand, and her daughter, distribute cheese, eggs, meat and bread to our folks.  Clients had a chance to discuss their needs with him, comment on our services, etc.  Several clients knew his parents who owned a store on West Boylston Street.  On their way out they told long-time volunteer Vickie Cox-Lanyon how honored they were to meet him.

We have been wanting him to visit the Pantry for a long time.  He commented on the dignity with which we serve our clients.  Yet, he managed to find an opportunity to discuss wasted food in our country, the need for SNAP benefits, etc.  He spoke of the work he has done with President Obama and Hillary Clinton.

It was a fabulous day.  We wanted to share it with you because you should be so proud that he took the time to visit our Church's Food Pantry.

If you have any questions about the Pantry, contact:  Dianne Mann at djmann@charter.net or (508) 963-0183.  We are always looking for donations, volunteers or ways to improve the Pantry.
