Musings from General Assembly 2016

Last week the UUA held its Annual General Assembly in Columbus, Ohio.  UUCW was well represented by Rev. Cheryl, Robin Mitzcavitch, Rev. Aaron Payson and Joe Viola.

While a more formal report is being planning for the fall from these delegates, I wanted to pass on some of the highlights from this year's gathering.  Below are video links to some of the more important experiences in my estimatation.

Rev. Dr. William Barber - Prophetic Mourning

During the first plenary session of General Assembly, William Barber, author of The Third Reconstruction and founder of the Moral Monday's movement spoke eloquently about the need for "prophetic mourning."

Synergy Worship Service

Our own Joe Viola and Samantha Read Burden participate in the Annual Bridging Ceremony @ GA.

The Service of the Living Tradition

Rev. Dr. William Sinkford spoke elequently about "Life (and Love) Calls Us On" saying in part, "resistance is what love looks like in the face of hate."

2016 Ware Lecture - Krista Tippett

Author and radio host, Krista Tippett talked about "the art of living" as another way to talk about "practices of faith"-virtues-the being and doing of spiritual life that our world so desperately needs in the 21st Century.

Sunday Morning Worship

Sunday Morning Worship featured the music and poetry of Dr. Glenn Thomas Rideout and Rev. Nancy McDonald Ladd who entreated to treat each other well in her sermon "In All Thy Getting, Get Understanding."

Othere very important moments include the Movement for Black Lives which took center stage at GA on the final day, and
debate over divestment from Palestine (a resolution which failed to pass General Assembly, and the Forum for Candidates for UUA President.

Your UUCW GA Delegates also participated in the counter-protest when members of the Westboro Baptist Church showed. Robin Mitzcavitch's video of the experience has gone viral!

All in all it was a very full week.  Your delegates are eager to share more with you about our experience this year and look forward to opportunities this fall to do just that!

Blessings,

Aaron
Summer Office Information

A few housekeeping notes before summer:

Summer office hours, starting July 5, will generally be on Tuesday from 9 am - 1 pm. I will not be here, however, on August 2 & August  16, as I will be doing a bit of traveling this summer (and therefore working from the road), so I suggest calling 508-853-1942 before you come if you will need something from the office, or even scheduling an appointment by email or phone. Phone messages will be checked daily, email more frequently. Regular office hours will resume on September 6.

Message News: The mid-Summer Message will go out (if we have anything to share) on July 26. The deadline for articles for it is 9 am that morning!

Have a safe and happy summer everyone!
