It is with deep sadness that we share the death of Roberta "Bobbi" Mawdsley in the early hours of Monday, July 27 at the Rose Monahan Hospice Home in Worcester, MA.  Bobbi had been attended to by many friends and family during her illness over the past few months and especially in the last few weeks.

A celebration of Bobbi's life is planned for Saturday, August 1, 2015 at 11 am here at UUCW. The Parish Service Committee requestes that attendees who are willing and able please bring a dessert dish for the reception following the memorial.

A few housekeeping notes before summer:

Summer office hours, starting June 29, will generally be on Tuesday from 9 am - 1 pm. There will be exceptions though, as I will be doing a bit of traveling this summer (and therefore working from the road), so I suggest calling 508-853-1942 before you come if you will need something from the office, or even scheduling an appointment by email or phone. Phone messages will be checked daily, email more frequently. Regular office hours will resume on August 31.

Gmail UsersPlease note that if you stop receiving the Message, Nugget, and Weekend Reminder, check your Promotions tab in Gmail. Often, you will find that church emails are in there! Please click HERE for more information. Please share this information with your fellow congregants if they mention they aren't getting the Message!

PLEASE NOTE: Our trash and recycling is generally picked up once a month. Please be sure to break down all cardboard boxes before putting them in the recycling dumpster so it doesn't fill up too fast!

Have a safe and happy summer everyone!

News From The Loaves & Fishes Food PantryFoodPantry

Summer's here but we are still busy here at the Pantry and could use your help with several items:

If Your Garden is Overflowing:

We will be distributing food on Saturday, August 15.  If you already have too much zucchini we would love to have it, and any other veggies, to distribute to our clients.  Since the Church is closed, we ask you to deposit it in the box on the BACK Church Steps on Friday afternoon, August 14.  Please DO NOT DROP it before!  Thank you!

School Supplies:

For many years the Pantry has distributed donated school supplies (backpacks, pencils, pens, notebooks, crayons, etc.) to our clients in need.  We will be distributing these at the Pantry distribution on August 15th.  It takes donations from many folks to fill this need.  Please take advantage of all of the Back To School sales that will be taking place and pick up these items for our clients.  Last year we served more than 70 clients from Kindergarden through High School age!

Thanks for helping out those in need in our area.  If you'd like to volunteer over the summer we could use your help as well.

Any questions, please contact:  Dianne Mann at djmann@charter.net or at (508) 963-0183.

Solar Panels on the roof of Fellowship HallSolarPanels

Some of us have been talking with Solar companies about the possibility of putting solar panels (photovoltaic - electricity producing) on the roof of our church. The roof of Fellowship Hall is sloped towards the south, and has enough space to make almost all the electricity we use at the church.

Some Solar companies will put the panels up for free, but then we don't get to use all the electricity they generate. Some Solar companies will sell the panels to us and then we get all the electricity but they're expensive.

We could put up more panels on the flat roof over the classrooms, mounted at an angle, but we might need to repair that roof first. There are lots of things to consider.

If you're interested in hearing about the progress, helping with the progress, or voicing your opinion about the project, etc, send me an email, or call me at 508-963-8683. We will have an informational meeting later this summer.

2015 Summer Services ScheduleSummerSvcs

Beginning June 28, we commence our Annual Summer Sunday Service Program.  As is our custom, these services take place in the lounge and are led by a host of lay leaders in the church and community who provide a time for reflection, contemplation, movement and creativity in a relaxed, informal environment.  This summer includes a spectacular array of opportunities for discussion and personal discovery.  Services are at 10:00 AM , and are over between Noon - 12:15.  As has become tradition, many of our summer service enthusiasts then retire to lunch at a local restaurant for roaming coffee hour and to continue the conversation.  While there is no formal child-care during the summer, these services are family friendly and children of all ages are welcome.  This year, we also plan to provide air conditioning for the lounge during services.

Sunday, Aug. 2,  10:00 AM - Jim McGrath - The Path from Illness to Healing

Jim will share some thoughts about his journey in dealing with debilitating illness and how he has found ways to cope and  find hope and purpose.

Sunday, Aug. 9,  10:00 AM - Charles Innis - On Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking

We will continue the theme from July 26th.  I certainly did not stop reading (hope that I never will), and have found some new books and new insights.   Quiet, by Susan Cain, has provided a great deal of insight in particular.  I will focus on that; if you can read it beforehand, it will add dimension to our discussion.

Sunday, Aug 16, 10:00 AM - Joan McGinn - The Wizard of Oz and the Quest to Find Home

In this fun summer service, we will look deeply into the story, meaning and archetypes of the characters in the Wizard of Oz and Dorothy's quest to find home.  While it can be seen as just a simple story of friendship and longing, it also has resonance for the many of us who are also seekers.  With discussion from the assembled group, this is bound to be an interesting service!!  This program is a reprise of one done many years ago, but some people have asked for it again, so here goes!

Sunday, Aug 23, 10:00 AM - Dianne Mann - Knitting Beloved Community

Knitting is a meditative, relaxing hobby that many people (both men and women) have enjoyed throughout the ages.  This service is designed to blend meditative practice with the task of beginning to knit a shawl for a member of our beloved Community.  Participants who so choose will participate in knitting a shawl and reflecting on what our Community has means to them.

Sunday, Aug 30, 10:00 AM - Thomas Pierce -  There Ought to be a Law

We will talk about whether we can regulate public behavior in the USA in light of the protections granted to individuals under our Constitution.

Sunday, Sept. 6, 10:00 AM - Joan Webster - Holiday Service

Participants will be invited to name what they would like the group to talk about. What have you been musing about? Come, let us share thoughts and time. This has become our tradition for holiday services.

UUCW Evening Book Group Meets August 12 at 7 pm EveBookGrp

Join us on the second Wednesday evening of the month, August 12th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Lounge to discuss Octavia Butler's novel, Kindred.  This book is part fantasy (there is time travel) and part historical fiction set in the antebellum South.  Dana is transported back to a plantation in Georgia every time that the owner's son needs her help.  As a black woman herself, she is increasingly at risk and sent for longer and longer periods of time.  I found the book difficult to put down.  Please join us to hear what others have to say.  We will also discuss our choices for the fall's readings, so give some thought to books you have read and can recommend.

Annual Men's Mentoring and Camping Weekend -

tent-camping-view.jpg

The Annual Men's Mentoring & Camping Weekend is scheduled for August 29/30. All ages are welcome, but boys under 13 should be accompanied by an adult (men are encouraged to bring sons/nephews/godsons/family friends). Talk to Dave Schowalter as soon as possible if you are interested (schowalter_david@hotmail.com, 508-829-1980).

Worcester Witnessing Whiteness Series 2015-2016 - Joan Webster

The Worcester City Manager's Dialogue Series on Race has opened many hearts and minds to the idea that racism hurts us all, but leaves people wondering how to move forward- what are the next steps?  One option for those new to the topic is to join us for a facilitated monthly workshop series.

The Witnessing Whiteness series is a nationally-recognized series of 11 sessions designed to:

  •       Build a community with a shared understanding of privilege, whiteness, and racism
  •       Increase your group's ability to support and implement diversity and racial justice initiatives
  •       Develop leadership capacity around issues of diversity and race

Join us as we read and explore together the ideas and exercises included within Shelley Tochluk's book Witnessing Whiteness. The full workshop curriculum is free and available online, so people who can't attend one session can easily follow along at home.
