Sewing for Friends 4 Kenya Friends4Kenya

Recently I have become aware of a problem that has hindered young African women from obtaining the same education as their male counterparts. Young women miss up to 60 days a year of school due to their periods.  Many female students can't afford sanitary supplies and resort to using ashes, leaves and discarded paper. Due to the "delicate" nature of this subject this problem has gone ignored or simply not considered a subject to be discussed. I met a woman who is doing something. Her name is Sarah Brewin and she has formed a company called Friends 4 Kenya. She provides a colorful cloth bag containing soap, hand sanitizer, 3 cotton briefs and flannel pads that are washed and reused. I was anxious to be a part of this solution knowing that getting an education is the key to rising out of poverty and establishing a better way of life. I have the flannel material to be sown into the pads and today Denise, Robin and I started sewing for those women who deserve a decent education. If anyone is interested in sewing please contact me - Susan Crossley - scrossley930@gmail.com.

It is with deep sadness that the office has been notified of the death of Dr. Elizabeth (Betty) Hoskins, who died last week.  Her daughter Katherine is in route.  Details regarding arrangements will be communicated as soon as they are published.

We are glad to know of Sharon Templeman's continuing recovery after abdominal surgery last week.

We continue to keep Bobbi Mawdsley in our thoughts and prayers as she begins chemotherapy treatments.

A few housekeeping notes before summer:

Summer office hours, starting June 29, will generally be on Tuesday from 9 am - 1 pm. There will be exceptions though, as I will be doing a bit of traveling this summer (and therefore working from the road), so I suggest calling 508-853-1942 before you come if you will need something from the office, or even scheduling an appointment by email or phone. Phone messages will be checked daily, email more frequently. Regular office hours will resume on August 31.

The mid-Summer Message will go out (if we have anything to share) on July 28. The deadline for articles for it is 9 am that morning!

Gmail UsersPlease note that if you stop receiving the Message, Nugget, and Weekend Reminder, check your Promotions tab in Gmail. Often, you will find that church emails are in there! Please click HERE for more information. Please share this information with your fellow congregants if they mention they aren't getting the Message!

PLEASE NOTE: Our trash and recycling is generally picked up once a month. Please be sure to break down all cardboard boxes before putting them in the recycling dumpster so it doesn't fill up too fast!

Have a safe and happy summer everyone!

Long Strange Trip - Six-Part Series on Unitarian Universalist History

June 23

7 pm in the LoungeUUHistory

This six-part, video-based, series detailing the history of Unitarian and Universalist thought from the beginning of the Christian era to what we know today as Unitarian Universalism produced by Ron Cordes of UU Films in Concord, MA.  Click HERE for a companion reading list.

Tuesday, June 23, Part VI - Unitarian Universalism

This final film in the series tells the story of the century-long "courtship" between Unitarianism and Universalism as a classic love story - "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl." It details how they "courted" each other, sought out other partners, and finally consummated the merger. It discusses how Humanism helped bring the two movements closer together, and the role that Liberal Religious Education, especially Sophia Lyon Fahs, had on laying the groundwork for the merger. It then follows Unitarian Universalism through the 50 years of its existence and ends with some personal comments on what its future might hold.

This series continues to be open to all interested in Unitarian Universalist History.  Please contact Aaron Payson (arpayson@charter.net) or Beau Rivers (brivers@uucworcester.org) for more information.

2015 Summer Services ScheduleSummerSvcs

Beginning June 28, we commence our Annual Summer Sunday Service Program.  As is our custom, these services take place in the lounge and are led by a host of lay leaders in the church and community who provide a time for reflection, contemplation, movement and creativity in a relaxed, informal environment.  This summer includes a spectacular array of opportunities for discussion and personal discovery.  Services are at 10:00 AM (except for June 28 which begins at Noon), and are over between Noon - 12:15.  As has become tradition, many of our summer service enthusiasts then retire to lunch at a local restaurant for roaming coffee hour and to continue the conversation.  While there is no formal child-care during the summer, these services are family friendly and children of all ages are welcome.  This year, we also plan to provide air conditioning for the lounge during services.

Sunday, June 28, NOON - Rev. Aaron Payson - Worship from UUA General Assembly, Portland, OR (potluck lunch)

We'll gather for our first Summer Worship Service next Sunday and join thousands of Unitarian Universalists from around the country in Portland, OR and online for the Sunday Morning Worship from General Assembly. The Reverend Alison Miller, Senior Minister of Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, is the worship leader for this special service.

Sunday, July 5,    10:00 AM - Joan Webster - Holiday Service

Participants will be invited to name what they would like the group to talk about. What have you been musing about? Come, let us share thoughts and time. This has become our tradition for holiday services.

Sunday, July 12, 10:00 AM - Judy Savage - Wrestling with The Good Idea

Judy will explore a sermon of the same title by UU minister, Rev. Georganne Greene, about sharing good ideas.

Sunday, July 19, 10:00 AM - Joan Webster - Who am I? - Racial Biography

This service  will include an exploration of what has shaped the self imagines we carry. No preparation is needed. Participants will write racial autobiographies and we will discuss the process, not necessarily the details. Depending on time, we may also write religious autobiographies.

Sunday, July 26, 10:00 AM - Charles Innis - Books of My Life

As some would agree, my life has been somewhat out of the ordinary in various ways.  Reading has been fundamental in my ability to understand, cope, and restore myself and to shape my life; some books have done more than others.  I would like to share some of those with you, as I did several years ago, and encourage discussion about them and others.

Sunday, Aug. 2,  10:00 AM - Jim McGrath - The Path from Illness to Healing

Jim will share some thoughts about his journey in dealing with debilitating illness and how he has found ways to cope and  find hope and purpose.

Sunday, Aug. 9,  10:00 AM - Charles Innis - On Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking

We will continue the theme from July 26th.  I certainly did not stop reading (hope that I never will), and have found some new books and new insights.   Quiet, by Susan Cain, has provided a great deal of insight in particular.  I will focus on that; if you can read it beforehand, it will add dimension to our discussion.

Sunday, Aug 16, 10:00 AM - Joan McGinn - The Wizard of Oz and the Quest to Find Home

In this fun summer service, we will look deeply into the story, meaning and archetypes of the characters in the Wizard of Oz and Dorothy's quest to find home.  While it can be seen as just a simple story of friendship and longing, it also has resonance for the many of us who are also seekers.  With discussion from the assembled group, this is bound to be an interesting service!!  This program is a reprise of one done many years ago, but some people have asked for it again, so here goes!

Sunday, Aug 23, 10:00 AM - Dianne Mann - Knitting Beloved Community

Knitting is a meditative, relaxing hobby that many people (both men and women) have enjoyed throughout the ages.  This service is designed to blend meditative practice with the task of beginning to knit a shawl for a member of our beloved Community.  Participants who so choose will participate in knitting a shawl and reflecting on what our Community has means to them.

Sunday, Aug 30, 10:00 AM - Thomas Pierce -  There Ought to be a Law

We will talk about whether we can regulate public behavior in the USA in light of the protections granted to individuals under our Constitution.

Sunday, Sept. 6, 10:00 AM - Joan Webster - Holiday Service

Participants will be invited to name what they would like the group to talk about. What have you been musing about? Come, let us share thoughts and time. This has become our tradition for holiday services.
