wolfsonlecture2015 Annual Wolfson Lecture

Sunday, April 12, 2015 will be the 3rd Annual Irving and Annabel Wolfson Memorial Lecture on Liberal Religion during the morning worship service at 10:00 am . The lecture, established in 2012 from a bequest of Dr. Irving Wolfson, retired local cardiologist and long-time member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Worcester, is devoted in part to answering the following: "Irving and Annabel Wolfson were agnostics who tried to live by the highest moral standards. From where does that motivation come to live by such standards to a person or persons who did not believe in a hereafter of rewards and punishments?"

This year's lecture, "On Becoming a Grown Up:  the Humanist Path to Spiritual Maturity" will be delivered by Rev. Dr. Kendyl Gibbons, Minister of All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Kansas City, Missouri.  She writes about the lecture, "Humanism justifies its reputation for arrogance if its adherents purport to lead unambiguously gracious and satisfying lives of love and service at all times.  In our struggles on the journey toward our full humanity, we can learn from the wisdom of sages in many religious and philosophical traditions.  What do they have in common that allows them to recognize each other immediately across the centuries, through differing vocabularies and heritages of spirit?  How might their ideas inform our aspirations today?"

Rev. Dr. Gibbons is a lifelong Unitarian Universalist, a recognized leader in the Unitarian Universalist Association, and past president of the Unitarian Universalist Ministers Association. She is a 1976 graduate of the College of William and Mary, with BAs in Religion and Sociology, holds a Master's degree from the University of Chicago Divinity School, and a Doctorate of Ministry from Meadville/Lombard Theological School. Widely  published in Unitarian Universalist journals and publications,  including Quest, Religious Humanism, and the UU World, she has also made numerous presentations at the annual UUA General Assemblies. She is a contributing author to Parenting Beyond Belief; On Raising Ethical, Caring Kids Without Religion. Kendyl has received the John Burton Wolf Prize for Excellence in Preaching, and the Meadville Lombard Alumni/ae Association Excellence in Ministry Award. She is also the author of two hymns included in the 1991 Unitarian Universalist hymnbook, Singing  The Living Tradition, as well as "Sources; a Unitarian Universalist Cantata."  Kendyl currently serves as Minister of All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Kansas City, MO.

Looking for a Few Good People!worshipassist

Worship at UUCW is the product of many
voices, hands and hearts.  Each Sunday we look forward to hearing from each other about the important happenings in our lives and the world, and our worship experience is made rich and meaningful because of the variety of voices included in it.

!!! WE NEED YOUR HELP ON SUNDAY MORNINGS !!!

We are looking for people to become part of one of our Sunday Morning Worship Teams as a Worship Assistant (WA).  WAs work with the Worship Leader to provide any of the following:  help setting up the sanctuary prior to the service, lighting the chalice, welcoming the congregation to worship, presenting the opening words, introducing the offertory or assisting with a ritual.  You do not have to have any previous training, we'll work with anyone willing to lend their presence to this program.

Congregation Leaders!  Do you have a special church program, project or group that you are promoting?  Becoming part of a Worship Team on the Sunday(s) before your activity gives you a moment to introduce the congregation to your activity.

New to the congregation?  This is a wonderful way to become known and to have an opportunity to introduce yourself.

Willing to give it a try?!  The please visit HERE to sign up on any upcoming Sunday morning.

What more information or have questions, please do not hesitate to contact our Minister.
