In Case of (This Weekend's!) Inclement Weather...Weather

In case of severe weather on Sunday morning, please remember the following:

There are 3 possible levels of closing:

  1. NO SUNDAY SCHOOL but REGULAR WORSHIP
  2. NO SUNDAY SCHOOL and INFORMAL WORSHIP (Minister will be on site to meet with those who attend - no music)
  3. ALL PROGRAMS CANCELLED (including evening programs)

In the event of severe weather, the decision to cancel will be made by 7 AM and will:

  • be placed on the church answering machine which can be accessed by dialing (508) 853-1942 and selecting 8 from the menu
  • be placed on the Church website (www.uucworcester.org)
  • be sent out to the RE family email list
  • be placed on TV channel 5
  • be placed online at www.thebostonchannel.com .
  • People may sign up at http://www.wcvb.com/connect/email  to have closing information (and other weather alerts) delivered to them by either email or a cell phone text message.
  • Office closings due to bad weather through the week will also be put on the answering machine at menu item 8. Jen will, barring internet/power outages, be able to check email and messages.

A Note About Announcements
 Announcements
In the very first edition of our weekly newsletter, The Message, on September 28, 1901, the following words appear concerning the rationale for beginning the weekly resource.

"It will save also the giving of notices from the pulpit, which is rightly regarded by many as a great disfigurement to the service and an ineffectual way of informing the people of the news of the church."

My how times have changed!  Or NOT!  Whether you agree with the statement above or not, the issue for many is the amount of time, especially for our children, announcements are once again taking at the beginning of service.

We there for invite folks to submit announcements in writing, to be included in the weekly newsletter (deadline Mon. 9 am) or if truly last minute, to provide the announcement in writing, to the Worship Assistant who is listed to do the morning welcome prior to the service.

Beginning on February 8, the Staff would like to begin an experiment.  Those wishing to highlight an announcement on Sunday morning are invited to submit it by Friday at 9 am to be included in a visual rotation of announcements which will be run during the Pre-service and Prelude.

Beginning February 6, please send your announcement to announcements@uucworcester.org by Friday at 9 am. Please include images to be used and a short (one line preferably) description.

A  Note About Joys & Sorrows

This Sunday we will be trying an alternative method for Joys & Sorrows, and will be looking for feedback about its efficacy.  Please share your response with Aaron, Robin, Beau or Matt.
Also, a few years ago, Russ Kay, of blessed memory now, wrote concerning the Joys & Sorrows ritual we include on Sunday morning.  It is a statement worth revisiting every once in a while to remind us of the importance and limitations of this weekly ritual.

On Sunday, an important part of each service is called "Sharing of Joys and Sorrows." Here members have the chance to tell the church community about moments of personal celebration or sadness. You should feel free to bring these significant events to our attention. To give all who need to a chance to participate, we suggest you keep the following points in mind:

  • Begin by introducing yourself and telling us your name.
  • Be as brief as possible, but say what you need to say.
  • Speak about yourself and your own feelings, using I statements.
  • By all means share elements of your family life, but please respect the individual dignity and privacy of others, especially children.
  • Where there is a condition or crisis that continues over an extended period, please be judicious with follow-ups; a periodic reminder is welcome, but weekly updates are generally inappropriate.
  • Whether or not you choose to speak, feel free to light a candle and place it in the Joys and Sorrows bowl near the pulpit during this time. Alternatively, you may choose to light a candle during the pre-service quiet and prelude music.
  • If you prefer not to speak yourself, you may write a brief note about your joy or sorrow and hand it to the minister to read or summarize.
  • Remember above all that this is a sacred time, reserved for personal testimony; it is not for announcements of coming social or political events. Those should be given (in writing or via email in advance) to the Church Administrator for inclusion in the weekly schedule distributed with the order of service and the weekly newsletter.

The sharing of joys and sorrows is a significant ritual. As our community continues to grow, with many more people and families, it becomes more important than ever as a vehicle for keeping us in touch with one another. Observing the suggestions above will help give everyone a chance to share the important events of their lives with us all.

Looking for a Few Good People!worshipassist

Worship at UUCW is the product of many voi ces, hands and hearts.  Each Sunday we look forward to hearing from each other about the important happenings in our lives and the world, and our worship experience is made rich and meaningful because of the variety of voices included in it.

!!! WE NEED YOUR HELP ON SUNDAY MORNINGS !!!

We are looking for people to become part of one of our Sunday Morning Worship Teams as a Worship Assistant (WA).  WAs work with the Worship Leader to provide any of the following:  help setting up the sanctuary prior to the service, lighting the chalice, welcoming the congregation to worship, presenting the opening words, introducing the offertory or assisting with a ritual.  You do not have to have any previous training, we'll work with anyone willing to lend their presence to this program.

Congregation Leaders!  Do you have a special church program, project or group that you are promoting?  Becoming part of a Worship Team on the Sunday(s) before your activity gives you a moment to introduce the congregation to your activity.

New to the congregation?  This is a wonderful way to become known and to have an opportunity to introduce yourself.

Willing to give it a try?!  The please visit HERE to sign up on any upcoming Sunday morning.

What more information or have questions, please do not hesitate to contact our Minister.
