Current News at UUCW

This year's all- church read is :  Temple Grandin:  How the Girl Who Loved Cows Embraced Autism and Changed the World.

We hope you can join in the read!  There will be opportunities for discussions scheduled for January.  On February 1, we will hold  a special multigenerational worship service  in which we will revisit the important themes explored in this highly recommended book.

Please look for the raffle box in fellowship hall and put your name in to win a copy of the book.  Again this year, Loree Griffin Burns has gracioulsy donated ten copies of these  books and we'll raffle two off each week.

Have your library save you a copy! Copies will also be available for purchase during the Holiday Shop here on Dec 13 and 21.

Please note that we have begun our Annual Flu Prevention Program at UUCW.   The current precautions include:

  1. The availability of waterless hand sanitizer at each entrance to the church and in each religious education classroom.  We ask that all those entering and exiting our facility use this resource.
  2. The posting of cautions for those experiencing flu-like symptoms.  The cautions currently ask that if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms (a temperature above 99 degrees, and/or a persistent cough, headache, or intestinal discomfort) to please refrain from entering the church.
Please notify the church office (office@uucworcester.org

/ 508-853-1942) if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms so that we can help care for you personally.  If you are eligible for and it is recommended that you have an annual flu vaccine, we strongly encourage you to get one. Thank you for helping protect those most vulnerable among us!

RE News for November 30RENews

Dear Families,

Thanks to all for attending the Giving Tree event this past Sunday...we got a lot accomplished!  Your child brought home a giving tree and stickers.

Here are the directions I gave your child for using the tree:

  1. Starting Monday, every morning when you get up , think of something that you could GIVE to someone else.  Ideas?  Love, a smile, a toy, a donation to food pantry, a card, laughter, help around the house, a song, peace, kindness, etc.
  2. After you complete that act of giving, place a sticker on the tree.
  3. Soon, your tree will be covered with stickers, showing all the kindness you have given to others...and maybe, on the 25th , you will get something special given to you.
  4. The holiday bow can be placed on the top of your tree.

Our Giving Tree in Fellowship Hall has been decorated with gift card envelopes by the children.  Please visit the tree, take an envelope, and return the gift by Dec 19th.  Gift cards , monetary doantions, and gifts will be given to families in need in our community.

Consider bringing in socks, hats and mittons to place on the tree...we will also donate these items to clients from our food pantry and a local nursing home.

Books for Liberia:

This coming Sunday, December 7th, children will have a special visit from Elizabeth Johnson, the retired teacher who is running the Liberia book drive.

In December of 2013, Elizabeth traveled to Liberia to visit an orphanage school run by parents of a former student.  She saw a desparate need for books and curriculum for this school and area schools.  In Liberia, schools were closed for an entire generation during the civil strife from 1980-2003.  School buildings, materials, and supplies were destroyed. Currently the area is going through more hardship with the ebola outbreak which has caused further devastation to families

This teacher saw a need and started a drive of gently used books for children ages 3-15.  Types of books needed are story books, science and math testbooks or workbooks, encyclopedias, dictionaries, and general reference books.  School supplies are also needed.

If you have any of these types of books or materials available, please consider sending them in this Sunday as a show of support for Elizabeth and her book project.

Mystery Pal Sign-Ups begin this Sunday-  Please looks for the flyers with the Order of Service and in Classrooms and see Jenny Delgizzi in Fellowship Hall.

PAGEANT Prep for Vespers.  Little Drummer Boy

For the next 3 Sundays during morning church school , we will prepare for the Vespers Service Pageant which will be held on Dec 21 st at 4pm.  This year we will do "The Little Drummer Boy."

Everyone is welcome to be a part of this pageant.  It will be narrated, so children will silently act out four scenes.   Parts they can play are: sheep, drummers, stars, drummer boy's parents, vendors in the marketplace, Mary and Joseph.  The children will hear the story, select what parts they'd like to play, and prepare some of the costumes and props.

Children with more involved acting parts: Narrators (Morgaine and Molly),  Parents, Drummer boy (Carrick), marketplace vendors, Mary and Joseph will need to be around for all the Sundays to practice.

If you will not be at Vespers, your child can still enjoy all the festivities in the preparation!!

There will be stories and lessons, discussions and projects!

Please let me know if your child is really interested in a particular part,,,,first come,  first serve! Please let me know if you will not attend vespers, so I know not to give your child an acting part.

Sunday December 7th

10 am - All children will be dismissed to Fellowship Hall following the children's coin and food collection.  Spirit Play children will still line up by their classroom to be checked in and escorted to Fellowship Hall by special helpers.

We will have a visit from Elizabeth Johnson from the Liberian Book Drive...and give our gifts of books, hats , mittens, socks.  Then we will hear the story of a boy who thought he didn't have any gift to give:  "The Little Drummer Boy".

Coming of Age -  At 10 am we welcome the Coming of Age Class from Unitarian Universalist Society East, Manchester CT  to our service and then to a pizza lunch in the lounge at 11:30.  We will be joining together  "Building UU Community Connections" during our class that will end at 1 pm.

Please sit in the designated pews during the service.  Thank you!

This Month's Topic: Hope

"We come together week after week as holders of hope.  There is hope in our connections each with the other.   In this circle, we are each, for the other, holders of hope.  Whether we suffer or celebrate or are having a ho-hum time of it, we are holders of hope."

What is Mystery Pals?
Mystery Pals are pairs of pals made up of one young person and one adult or teen who do not know each other's identity. This is a multi-generational community-building project that has shown great success in many other UU communities, and this year, we have decided to try it. This project is closely managed by the Religious Education Committee.  Pals who sign up to participate and are matched to each other by the committee.

wire-bound-pad.jpg

What do Mystery Pals do?  Mystery Pals communicate with each other through the exchange of notes, drawn pictures, cards, riddles, puzzles, baby pictures, hints about identity, and small trinkets.   The main thing is to stay in touch and remain a mystery! All communication is managed by the RE Committee.

How do Mystery Pals keep in touch?  In January and February paper bag mailboxes with your secret #  will be in the Fellowship Hall.    Keep your number a secret!  Put notes or whatever you are giving each week in the Pal's bag. The Religious Education Committee will ensure that everyone recieves their communication weekly after the notes have been reviewed!

When do the Pals find out the identity of each other?  Identities will be revealed during our Mystery Pal Reveal Party on Feb 18th directly after the service.    FUN FUN FUN.  It's all about the connections we make in the world!!  Sign up on December 7th with Jenny Delgizzi.

A few of us at UU have been contacted to help with a book drive.  Instead of our holiday shoe-box event, we will be donating books to kids, ages 3-15, in Liberia.  Because of political strife in that country beginning in 1980, schools, libraries, books and supplies were destroyed by fire.  Through education, we would like to help Liberians regain their equilibrium.  Math and science textbooks are greatly in need as well as encylopedias, dictionaries and reference books. Age-appropriate new and gently used books of all kinds are also welcome.  Obtaining a number of one kind of book would greatly benefit kids in the classroom.  Look for the power point presentation re this drive in  our One-Room School House on Dec. 7. For those who do not have the time to find books, a shipping donation will be very much appreciated.  Each box of books costs $15.00 dollars.

As in the past, Robin and her RE will jump in head first to help with this event.

Please place your books in the box labeled "Books for Liberia" which will be either in Robin's office or in Fellowship Hall.

Merci!

Annual Vespers Tea - December 21VespersTea

Plan on enjoying the Annual Vespers Tea immediately after the beautiful Holiday Vespers Service (4 PM).   We will take out our silver coffee and tea service and our china to again celebrate the holiday season the way our congregation has done it for years. Come into Fellowship Hall still singing "Silent Night" and join us in fellowship and wonderful food, drink, and conversation.

Please bring either a savory (if your last name starts with A - P) or sweet dish (Q - Z) to share. Drop it off in Fellowship Hall before the service. Write a list of the ingredients on a file card and place it with your dish to provide information for people with allergies.

We will be setting up an hour prior to the start of service. Can you come early and set up tables and/or help with plating?   Are you available to help set out food after the service? Who wants to serve tea water, coffee, or festival punch? Lastly, we need all to help clean up so no one has to stay late. If you are willing to be part of any of these important groups, please CLICK HERE
