Fundraising Summit -
Sunday, October 12, 11:45 amFundraising

Come one, come all who have ideas about fundraising this year.  We will meet in the Sanctuary following to discuss events and strategies for raising money approved by the congregation at the Annual Meeting last June.  In addition to its annual fundraising goal of $15,000, the congregation voted to attempt to raise an additional $30,000 before this amount is to be taken from investments in support of this year's operational expenses.  We are looking for enthusiastic and energized people and ideas to help us raise these funds.  Join us for this important summit.  Childcare will be available.  If interested in childcare, please email Aaron Payson (arpayson@charter.net) by Wednesday, October 8.

To All, whether with or without a disability, Are you interested in pursuing a goal of helping to ensure that the UUCW has a Facility, Ministry and Programs that are inclusive to all Congregants with disabilities?  We are.  The UUA has developed a Pilot Project for Certification in Abilities and Inclusiveness.  This would be like our Certification as a Welcoming Congregation.  It is an all-encompassing review of our Church and we are interested in having you join us, as you are able, on Sunday, Oct. 5th at 12:00 p.m. in the Lounge.  We will, hopefully, form our Group, review the work before us and develop some goals.  Please let Dianne Mann know if you require and accommodation for this meeting or if you have other issues that prevent your participation that day.  Joan Webster and I look forward to our Meeting.  Contact:  Dianne Mann, at djmann@charter.net or Joan Webster at jgwebster@rcn.com with any questions.

Book Group Reading Schedule 2014-2015

Our community conducts outreach in many ways.  One of those is through our support of the Jericho Road Project whose mission it is to bridge communities by matching the profession talents of volunteers with the needs of community-based nonprofit organization to promote community development, strengthen social services, and enrich the lives of volunteers.  Two of our members, Mike Peckar and Paul Vigneau serve as affiliate board members for Jericho Road's Worcester Affiliate.

On the evening of October 1, 2014, Mike, Paul invite you to join them at Jericho Road Worcester's Annual Seminar.  This fundraising event will bring together a broad spectrum of people in the business and nonprofit community for a presentation on Building Relationships that Drive Results Through Storytelling from Sean Kavanagh, CEO of the Ariel Group.  Paul and Mike have had the opportunity to attend an Ariel Group presentation and have read their book, Leadership Presence and encourage anyone who may wish to learn a different approach to presenting themselves, their work, or their passions to attend this event.

Rally Day!! - September 28 at 11:15 am

RallyDay

The postcard you see here is postmarked Sept. 27, 1917.  Back in that day the First Universalist Church of Worcester held an annual "Rally Day" which was described a few years earlier in The Message as ". . . when an effort is made to have every member present and when promotions take place. . . Quite a few faces of our folks have not been seen at the Sunday morning service as yet, and it is time we all realized that the vacation is over and that the regular services and work of the Church need us.  Will not then all of our people rally with zest Sunday morning and take up another year's work with a spirit a which means success?"

It was a good idea then and a GREAT IDEA now!  Over the years this congregation has employed a variety of measures to invite the participation of the congregation into the variety of ministries and projects that we facilitate.  This year the Staff will sponsor "Rally Day" and invites all those responsible for programming, groups, events, etc., to bring sign-up sheets, posters, table displays etc., to highlight the work that is planned for this year and to encourage the broadest possible involvement by members and friends of the congregation.  Please join us during coffee hour for this fun and important event!

And. . .thanks to Rachel Peckar and Chester Clarke for finding and preserving the 1917 postcard!

Weekly Meditative Moment

CarnationsPoem

Pale blossoms, each balanced on a single jointed stem,

And leaves curled back in elaborate Corinthian scrolls;

And the air cool, as if drifting down from wet hemlocks,

Or rising out of ferns not far from water,

A crisp hyacinthine coolness,

Like that clear autumnal weather of eternity,

The windless perpetual morning above a September cloud.
