There is a living web that runs through us
To all the universe
Linking us each with each and through all life
On to the distant stars.

Dear Families,

As our new year of Religious Education is about to unfold, I reflect on the wonderful things we have accomplished. We will carry on with many solid programs from previous years like Spirit Play and OWL. We will also continue our practice of volunteering with IHN -Interfaith Hospitality Network- Family Homeless Shelter Program, The CROP Walk, the Giving Tree, and Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry. We will again run One Room School Houses and Children's Chapels, a Unicef Carnival, a Vesper's Pageant, A Seder, an Egg Hunt, and a RE Fun Day. Youth Group will attend a mission trip in the fall to H.O.M.E. Orland, Maine. We will continue to offer parent groups and other small group opportunities. These events are now part of our history...a history we will continue to grow together.

Moving forward, the goals of the program are the same. We strive not to stamp our views on a child, but to allow every child the space to discover and question at his or her own pace. We want to model to your child how and why we choose to live peacefully and respectfully...using our Seven Principles:

  • We believe that each and every person is important.
  • We believe that all people should be treated fairly.
  • We believe that our churches are places where all people are accepted and where we keep on learning together
  • We believe each person must be free to search for what is true and right in life.
  • We believe each person should have a vote on the things that concern him or her.
  • We believe we should help build a peaceful, fair, and free world.
  • We believe in caring for our planet earth.
  • We also strive to educate your child with exciting, well- written curricula and unique experiences that can only be found in a faith community like ours.

Our curricula teaches Unitarian Universalist history and how our religion draws from many sources:

  • The sense of awe and wonder that we all share.
  • Women and men of long ago and today - people whose lives remind us to be kind and fair
  • The ethical and spiritual wisdom of the world's religions.
  • Christian and Jewish teachings which tell us to love all others as we love ourselves.
  • The use of reason and the discoveries of science, the harmony of nature, and the sacred circle of life.

Our theme this year is "Strengthening the Ties that Bind." Taken from our 7th Principle: Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part; we will strive to focus each month on the circles of connection and how we can, as individuals and a church, strengthen each of the stands of the web that pass through those circles.

We begin with ourselves, a strong point in the center of a circle. We are surrounded by and connected to family and friends, church community, larger communities and the world and earth.

The question: in what ways can we become and stay more connected to each ?

I look forward to spending time with each of your children in their classrooms. We have a amazing group of lead teachers excited to share our Tapestry of Faith curricula and their own personal talents and gifts. The Religious Education Committee and I would like to welcome you to the delightful experience of Religious Education at UUCW.

Here's to another joyful year of learning and growing together, knowing that each of us is wonderful drop in the large ocean of connection.

In Faith,
