PAA Action Alert

PAA Parent Voice
Award dinner and
2014 Leadership Conference
special newsletter edition!

PAA is excited to announce two very special upcoming events in the life of our organization.

1 - Our first ever PAA Parent Voice Award Dinner, honoring PAA co-founder Leonie Haimson, will take place on Monday evening, July 28, in Washington, D.C.

Leonie is the founder of New York City-based Class Size Matters. This year, Leonie nearly single-handedly organized parents around the U.S. to oppose the impending commercialization of student information by the inBloom company, which ultimately went out of business after every state on its original clientele list pulled out of the program. Leonie is also the founder of NYC-based Class Size Matters, a group dedicated to promoting smaller class size - a proven, effective school reform strategy. Leonie started the New York Public School Parents' Blog and has also been a leader in challenging school privatization, charter co-locations, and the misuse and over use of standardized tests.

A special guest speaker and entertainment will make this evening even more memorable.

The 2014 PAA Parent Voice Award Dinner is being hosted by the National Education Association at their headquarters in Washington, DC.

Tickets will include a buffet dinner and free non-alcoholic drinks. There will be a cash bar from 6:30 to 7 pm.

Proceeds from the dinner are fully tax deductible and will support PAA's programs and the work of our chapters around the U.S.

The registration form also includes an option for those unable to attend who would like to make a tax-deductible contribution to PAA in honor of Leonie.

We hope to see you there!

2 - The 2014 PAA Leadership Conference begins Tuesday morning, July 29 and will run through Wednesday noon, July 30, at the George Washington University Inn in D.C.

This conference is designed for PAA chapter and affiliate members or individuals or groups seriously considering forming PAA chapters or affiliates.

You can find out more about forming a PAA chapter or becoming a PAA affiliate here.

The Leadership Conference will include interesting and informative workshops and discussions all day Tuesday and on Wednesday morning. We will have a facilitated session with the Kirwan Institute on the impact of race, ethnicity, and culture on education policy discussions.

We will also organize legislative visits on Monday during the day and Wednesday afternoon for those of you who wish to discuss PAA positions and local concerns with your elected representatives. Logistics and materials for Congressional visits will be shared on the PAA Leaders yahoo list.

If you are not yet a PAA chapter or affiliate leader, and are interested in learning more about this year's leadership conference, please contact julieW@parentsacrossaremica.org.
