Head of School News:
Summer Postcards from Woodlynde
|
|
It is hard to believe we are already mid-summer 2013! That means it is time for my third annual summer newsletter - Postcards from Woodlynde - when many of our faculty and staff share their favorite summer plans with each other and with you.
One of my plans is training for a half marathon. I completed my first full marathon this past March, and my wife, son, and daughter are now running alongside (or maybe a little behind). My beach reading plans include both Great by Choice by Jim Collins, and on the lighter side, Born to Run by Christopher McDougall. As for my favorite vacation place, Ocean City, MD, has been a Fulco-family tradition dating back to my parents, and I love having three generations sharing sand, surf, and summer barbecue.
I hope you enjoy reading the Summer Postcards below. I also include a quick Head of School Highlights of recent events, summer activities on campus, and what to look forward to with the start of the 2013-2014 school year.
Happy summer everyone!

What's Going on at Woodlynde This Summer?
School Safety
Under the direction of our Safety Committee, Woodlynde is upgrading its phone and public address systems and installing more cameras around campus.
Campus Beautification
Continuing the new design and color palate initiated during last summer's building renovation, classrooms will be getting new carpet and paint. Our popular Literacy Institute will finally be easily recognized with a formal sign over the Institute's main office.
Curriculum
Head of Upper School, Jill Dougherty, and Head of FOUNDATIONS, Lower, and Middle Schools, Magi Koch, are partnering with teachers to develop new curriculum.
Upper School - new electives are being developed, including Creative Writing, Personal Finance, American Sign Language, and Drama.
Middle School - curriculum continues to be further aligned with the Common Core Curriculum Standards, particularly those that build personal skills in the areas of creative thinking, teamwork, critical thinking, problem solving, and effective oral and written communication.

Woodlynde Sets Annual Fundraising Record!
This year we set an annual fundraising record of over $820,000. There are so many people to thank for this year's extraordinary success: the many donors who supported our Teachers Retirement Fund; the generous individuals, foundations, and corporations who supported the Woodlynde Scholarship Fund, with special thanks to those who utilized the State's EITC program; and the hundreds of donors to The Annual Fund for Woodlynde.
Mattie Sweet '13, dedicated a portion of her senior project in Advancement to understanding the importance of The Annual Fund, and made this video to thank everyone for their generous support.

NEW! Woodlynde Accepted into OSTC Program!
New for 2013-2014, Woodlynde is a participant in the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) program. If you haven't had the chance to look into the OSTC program or the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program, I encourage you to do so at newpa.com. Qualifying participants can receive a 75% tax credit for a one-year commitment and 90% for for a two-year commitment.

Grandparents' & Special Friends' Day
This is one of the school's favorite events of the year and mine. The huge annual attendance is a wonderful tribute to our grandparents and the love and care they have for their grandchildren. And every year, I have multiple grandparents coming up to me to say "thank you for what you are doing for my grandchild." Many say they struggled themselves in school and wish that a place like Woodlynde had been there for them. While they have achieved success in their lives, they deeply hope the path to their grandchild's success will be paved with much better strategies and opportunities than they had available for themselves.

Master Plan Update
Looking ahead, our Master Plan consultant, Spiezle Group, spent several days in May meeting with a preliminary array of Woodlynde constituents - teachers, student, Board members, and parents - to gain an understanding of Woodlynde's physical needs and aspirations. Working from these meetings, Spiezle is crafting a draft map and design of what the future of Woodlynde's campus may hold. Later this summer and into the fall, I will be reaching out to more members of the Woodlynde Community for their opinions on this exciting project.

Woodlynde Website Getting a Facelift!
One exciting project we are working on this summer is giving our website a facelift. After gathering feedback and suggestions from many of our current and past parents, faculty, Board of Trustees, alumni, and Head of School Society, we have selected a design and finalized navigation to make our website more user-friendly and visually appealing. Our new site will launch just in time for the new school year! Below is a "sneak peak" of what you can expect.
