President's Message
As I write, I am watching the clock on my television tick down to a federal government shutdown. Budget talks are incredibly complex and historically don't hinge on one issue, yet this looming shutdown appears to do just that. The House has proposed a new budget allowing the government to continue to spend and increase the deficit, but only if Obamacare is repealed or at least delayed. Regardless of your own stance, the debate raises significant moral and philosophical issues regarding personal responsibility versus societal and employer obligations.
Our luncheon speaker this month, E. Thomas Foster, Jr. will speak to some of these issues in his presentation "Financial Health of Retirement Plans". We have all heard the arguments that employers must offer retirement benefits to remain competitive and compete for top talent. Mr. Foster says healthy retirement benefit plans are essential to an employer's bottom line, and not just from a recruiting standpoint. In this presentation he will examine the costs and productivity of workforces with robust retirement plans versus those without. This will be a timely discussion and I hope that you can join us!
If you attended last month's meeting, you know that Dick Weber once again gave an outstanding presentation! He is truly a thought leader in our industry and he never ceases to amaze me. If you invited a guest to last month's meeting, let me thank you. I will be making phone calls to those individuals this week. If you didn't invite a guest last month, please do so this month!
