President's Message

February is one of my favorite months for the Houston Society because of our annual Award Banquet. We have a chance to have a very elegant evening together and fellowship, hear a great speaker and honor our own. Bill Swalick is the recipient this year of the "Woody" Woodson Award and Brian Cororve is the recipient of the Clark McCleary Scholarship. Both are well deserved. Additionally, it is always fun to see those who are honored for their years of membership in the Society. This is always a highlight to me because we get to see those who have been so committed to our profession and to the Society throughout the years. I think it is a real testament to the professionalism exemplified in Houston and the years of intellectual capital within our local chapter. Also, Brennan's is a great venue. If you haven't made plans yet to join us for the evening, please do so as soon as possible.

We will follow up our banquet with two very timely presentations. In March we have Brian Miller, a CPA and last year's recipient of the Clark McCleary Scholarship, presenting on the Fiscal Cliff. When Brian accepted we all thought this would be solved by now. It should be very interesting. Then in April, we have Bill Fisher talking about the Healthcare Reform Act and the impact on each one of us and our clients. I am really looking forward to this as I don't think any of us knows the degree to how this will be a huge issue for all.

Lastly, if you haven't renewed your membership yet, please do so. That way you can be a part of these great meetings coming up. See you at the Banquet!

William "Bill" Swalick Named Woodson Award Winner

TO BE PRESENTED AT FEBRUARY 21 AWARDS BANQUET

The Houston Chapter of the Society of Financial Service Professionals is proud to announce that William "Bill" Swalick is the Benjamin N. "Woody" Woodson Award recipient for 2012.

The Woodson Award is presented to an individual from the Houston insurance community in recognition of meritorious service to the insurance industry and community. This award was named after the late Woody Woodson, former CEO of American General Life Insurance Company. Woody was a legend in the insurance industry who epitomized the qualities necessary for consideration.

Bill has been an active member of NAIFA and the Society of FSP since the mid-seventies. He served as President of the Houston Chapter of SFSP in 2000-2001, during which time the Chapter received the Medal of Honor. Never one to tire of professional development, Bill completed the Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy (CAP) in 2012 to help his work in the highest level of estate planning and charitable giving. He and Mollie, his wife of 43 years, have two children and are active members of Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church. Bill is also a member of the American Legion in Katy, Texas, and a regular during Grandfather Day each month at his grandson's school.

Bill began his career in 1969 with Travelers Insurance Company as an Agency Service Representative. He rose to Branch Manager, Second Vice President, and Regional Vice President before leaving the Travelers to join American General as Vice President of Product Development. He retired from American General in 2011 as Regional Vice President, and is currently a National Sales Consultant with an Independent Marketing Organization.
