Solar Energy News Summary:

Top Stories

     * Saudi Arabia: SASIA teams up with SEI on solar training program
JEDDAH - Saudi Arabia's Solar Industry Association (SASIA) has launched a vocational training program with US solar training company Solar Energy International (SEI) aimed at engineers, designers and photovoltaic decision makers in order to equip the region to make the most of its growing solar market.

     * Saudi Arabia - Saudi Arabia "committed" to green revolution.
Saudi Arabia's newfound commitment towards diversifying its energy mix away from fossil fuels is not greenwash, according to the country's solar industry association.

     * Saudi Arabia: Saudi Arabia, UAE seek $1.5b to finance solar power plants.
Saudi Arabia, the biggest member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec), and the United Arab Emirates, fourth-biggest in the group, are seeking to add 1,000 megawatts of solar capacity, enough to electrify 200,000 homes.

    * UAEDubai  investment firm buys Italian solar farm. Dubai-based energy investment company Adenium Capital has purchased a 24MW solar farm in Italy.
The €52m ($69m) acquisition, in partnership with ForVEI, almost doubles the capacity of its solar portfolio, the company said in a statement

*UAE - How solar energy is shining new light on the UAE. Sometimes the solution stares us in the face, to the point where we have to wear sunglasses. I speak about solar power, of course, and the recent news that Dubai International Airport's Terminal D is going to use solar power to meet part of its energy requirements.

      * Qatar - Qatar rescues Germany's Solarworld from bankruptcy.  Solarworld a fallen star of Germany's solar sector, could receive a €35m capital injection from Qatar as part of efforts to save the company following a global fall in the price of solar panels.

      * JordanU.S. to give Jordan $100 million for solar energy projects. The project will help the kingdom to save about 60,000 tons of fuel derivatives a year that are used for power generation, the Amman-based newspaper reported, citing an unidentified official.

     * Morocco - Morocco launches tender for two solar power plants.  Two concentrated solar power plants producing 200MW and 100MW respectively will be built near the south-Moroccan city of Ouarzazate, the country's government has announced.

      * Turkey - Using Solar Energy Resources to Generate Electricity in Turkey. Turkey's solar radiation values are similar to Spain's and Portugal's, which have the highest solar radiation values in Europe. Compared to the rest of Europe, insolation values are higher, and conditions for solar power generation are similar to those of Spain's.

      * MENA RegionClean Energy e-briefing: The Middle East and North Africa update - Algeria, Kuwait and Oman implement renewable plans.

*Global -  EU solar trade deal sets floating price on Chinese panels. Under the proposals, the minimum import price would fall as industry-wide costs are reduced, ensuring that Europe does not lock itself into higher than necessary prices.

Research - Seawater and solar power grow crops in the desert.
In the scorching desert of Qatar, scientists are showing that saltwater can be used to help grow crops.

Solar Industry News - Sunny Outlook for the solar industry. Walk up and down the aisles of last week's Intersolar North America conference in San Francisco and the gist generally echoed among exhibitors, attendees, industry analysts and the media is that the future looks bright for the solar industry. In fact, according to EuPD Research, the solar market is poised to add about 3.9 GW of new solar capacity by the end of this year; in the U.S., the grid storage market could hit 4 GW by 2016.

Solar Investing & Project Finance - Activ Solar seeks to tap Islamic financing for Middle East. Solar plants' predictable and steady revenue streams could be a good fit for the growing Islamic financing market, Activ Chief Executive Officer Kaveh Ertefai said today in Munich.
A technology promising these benefits is luminescent solar concentration (LSC). An LSC cell has two transparent plates (in a single-layer device) sandwiching a fluorescent (luminescent) material. This acts as a waveguide that traps light rays by total internal reflection and guides them to the plate edges, where they are therefore concentrated and can be absorbed by underlying solar PV cells.
