Solar Energy News Summary:
Top Stories
* Saudi Arabia: SASIA teams up with SEI on solar training programJEDDAH - Saudi Arabia's Solar Industry Association (SASIA) has launched a vocational training program with US solar training company Solar Energy International (SEI) aimed at engineers, designers and photovoltaic decision makers in order to equip the region to make the most of its growing solar market. * Saudi Arabia: Khaled Juffali Company and Soitec Announce Saudi Aramco Chooses Soitec's Solar-Energy Technology. Partners Khaled Juffali Company (KJC), a Saudi Arabian investment company, and Soitec, a world leader in semiconductor materials for the electronics and energy industries, have announced that the Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Saudi Aramco), a global petroleum and chemicals company owned by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, has decided to use Soitec's concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) technology for a 1-megawatt solar-energy pilot plant in Saudi Arabia's northwestern Tabuk region.
* Saudi Arabia: Solar power proves a win-win strategy for KSA. A slide in solar power costs and a surge in oil prices over the last few years has made solar power a win-win strategy for Saudi Arabia: saving billions of dollars of crude for export while making electricity at less than half the cost. Riyadh plans to install 41,000 megawatts (MW) of solar power over the next 20 years, but to date has built only 12 MW - or less than even Britain installed in early May. Despite year round sunshine, Gulf states have lagged far behind most of the world in solar power - so far.
* UAE : Renewable energies should drive desalination, Abu Dhabi event told. Countries in the region should consider powering desalination plants with solar and other renewable forms of energy to combat rising prices of fossil fuels and growing needs for potable water, say experts. Oil and gas are limited resources ... we have to find another solution, we have to find another source," said Dr Mohammed Dawoud, water-resources manager at the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD).
* UAE - Dubai bus shelters to use solar power for cooling. Trials are underway to use solar energy to power and cool about 100 bus shelters after more than 160 air-conditioned shelters were left without power. The trials will also look into changing the current design of the stands to allow air circulation, should cooling fail, according to officials from Right Angle Media, the authorised operator of bus shelters in the city. A lack of power supply is the major cause behind non-operational shelters according to the firm. * Kuwait - Bidding opens on Kuwait first solar energy project. Kuwait invited bids on Wednesday to build a solar farm to produce 70 megawatts of electricity by 2016, the first phase of a plan to generate 2,000 megawatts from renewables in 2030, the project supervisor said. Thirty-seven consortia out of 107 prequalified to bid, said Salem al-Hajraf, head of energy research at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research. The second and third phases will produce 930 MW and 1,000 MW, respectively, when the project is completed in 2030, he said
* Qatar - Total sees opportunities in Qatar's solar energy development.
Global energy major Total sees prospects in Qatar's solar energy initiative as the country has set a target to meet 16% of its production from renewable energy by 2018, a senior company executive has said. According to Arnaud Chaperon, Total senior vice-president (New Energies Division), Qatar looks at a renewable energy capacity of 1,800 megawatts (MW) by 2018.
* Jordan - Jordan to build solar energy station. French firm Solar Euromed is to build a pilot solar energy station and laboratory in southern Jordan.Jordan's Higher Council for Science and Technology's National Center for Research and Development signed an agreement Sunday with Euromed to construct the facility in the Shoubak district.
* Turkey - 2013 a critical year for solar energy development. 2013 is expected to be a pivotal year for the Turkish solar industry, as the country's Energy Market Regulatory Authority gears up to distribute PV production licenses for projects larger than 1 MW. Meanwhile, cumulative capacity is expected to surpass 4 GW by 2017.
* MENA Region - Eversheds - Developing Renewable Energy Projects - A guide to achieving success in the Middle East. * Global - Solar Industry Anxious Over Defective PanelsThe solar panels covering a vast warehouse roof in the sun-soaked Inland Empire region east of Los Angeles were only two years into their expected 25-year life span when they began to fail. It was not an isolated incident. Worldwide, testing labs, developers, financiers and insurers are reporting similar problems and say the $77 billion solar industry is facing a quality crisis just as solar panels are on the verge of widespread adoption.
Solar Investing & Project Finance - Solar shares rise as Goldman Sachs upgraded a number of companies and raised its price targets, saying near-term growth and better earnings outweigh long-term risks. Analyst Brian Lee believes the sector is minimizing its risk by shifting efforts away from Europe and more toward North America and emerging markets like Japan, India, South America and the Middle Eas
