Solar Energy News Summary:
Top Stories
* Saudi Arabia: Why the Saudis could wind up in the solar export business. Just as Saudi Arabia has earned a vast income from oil over the last century, it could equally well earn a similarly vast amount from solar, spread over a much longer period in the future. * Saudi Arabia: Middle East, Africa Could Thrive on Solar Power.
The oil industry is starting to experience a shift in supply and demand distribution.
Many oil producers, particularly nations in the Middle East and North Africa, are beginning to develop. Citizens are demanding a higher standard of living, energy demand is growing, and domestic resources are stretching thin. Saudi Arabia is an example of this. Currently the world's largest oil producer, the Middle Eastern nation is feeling the change in dynamic as demand grows. Even the IEA has predicted that the United States will surpass Saudi Arabia's production level in under a decade.
* UAE: Masdar City's moment in the sun. For Abu Dhabi's Masdar City, an ambitious eco-vision that the owner Mubadala Development hopes will help to diversify the economy away from fossil fuel exports, this year is shaping up to be an important year. Solar energy demand in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is attracting the attention of the global solar market, as the industry begins to diversify existing demand from feed-in tariff markets with demand from markets that offer fundamental solar drivers such as insolation, grid prices and electricity needs. On the back of these fundamental drivers, GTM Research, in collaboration with the Emirates Solar Industry Association (ESIA), forecasts the annual solar market in MENA countries to reach nearly 3.5 gigawatts by 2015 and comprise close to 8 percent of total demand globally in that year. * Qatar - Qatar Warming to Solar Energy. In order to achieve the first carbon-neutral FIFA tournament and 20 percent energy production by renewable resources, Qartar is turning to solar energy technologies. However, because most solar photovoltaic (PT) energy has been used in more temperate, northern climates, solar technology will need to be modified in order to accommodate Qatar's desert climate.
* Jordan - Jordan to receive Gulf aid for renewable energy. Jordan is set to receive $300 million from the Gulf states to boost investment in renewable energy, officials say, as Amman looks to solar and wind power as potential solutions to the country's chronic energy woes.
Technology Focus -
Smart Grid Spending Rose t to $13.9 Billion Driven by China. Investments in smart-grid technologies that boost efficiency and curb energy waste rose 7 percent last year to $13.9 billion, driven by spending in China, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance.
