Wakefield Books Welcomes Anthony Amore
Author of
The Art of the Con: The Most Notorious Fakes, Frauds, and Forgeries in the Art World
 The Art of the Con
tells the stories of some of history's most notorious yet untold cons. They involve stolen art hidden for decades; elaborate ruses that involve the Nazis and allegedly plundered art; the theft of a conceptual prototype from a well-known artist by his assistant to be used later to create copies; the use of online and television auction sites to scam buyers out of millions; and other confidence scams incredible not only for their boldness but more so because they actually worked. Using interviews and newly released court documents, The Art of the Con will also take the reader into the investigations that led to the capture of the con men, who oftentimes return back to the world of crime. For some, it's an irresistible urge because their innocent dupes all share something in common: they want to believe.
Anthony is best known for his work as an investigator and author. His most recent book "The Art of the Con" is a New York Times Crime Best Seller.

Revenant
by Peter Larrivee
Jake King tries to be cool, with his trilby hat, fancy coffee, and hand-rolled cigarettes. But Jake's life comes with a harsh past. His father died when he was very young, his mother is incarcerated in a mental hospital. After crossing paths with the local mob while chasing a story about missing persons, Jake finds himself jobless, hopeless, and beginning to doubt his own sanity. The screaming, empty-eyed wraiths that litter the streets of Providence haunt his tortured mind. This would be bad enough even without a mysterious, dark mentor figure and a shadowy entity bent on destroying Jake, and everyone around him. Revenant is a Horror/Urban Fantasy novel set in H.P. Lovecraft's city of Providence.

| Penelope's Song
by Lois Cuddy
"In this compelling saga, Lois Cuddy vividly recreates an ancient world-where women are prizes, slaves, and means to an heir--and adeptly constructs the paradox of captive and queen. Cuddy's Penelope is on par with Antigone in her beliefs and allegiances, but Penelope is gifted and cunning; cunning enough to create a counter feminine world with her skilled slave weavers that exemplifies empowerment and compassion. In this way, she is model female heroine starring in a work that is scholarly and well-researched, but fascinating and readable." ~ Laurette Folk, A Portal to Vibrancy

Duster Duty, 1967: A Rhode Islander in Vietnam by Allen Fitzpatrick
Nineteen-year-old Allen Fitzpatrick is on the brink of adulthood when he gets a letter from the local draft board telling him that it's his turn to serve his country. He finds himself on the other side of the world manning light armored air-defense and ground support guns known as M42 Dusters. Along the way, he hears others talk about past battles such as the Korean Conflict and World War II, but this is Fitzpatrick's world-whether or not he understands it. Talking about the M42 Duster, he doesn't dwell on its role in combat but rather on the experience of maintaining such a fighting machine. Fitzpatrick explains what it's like to go with a group of young men to combat...and what it's like to return to a country that is angry, both at the war itself and at the unsuspecting soldiers returning from duty.

Staff Picks for October
|
A dystopian novel of sorts but at its essence it's a survival story. Recently republished and made into a film after being published in Germany in 1960, it's the story of a woman vacationing in a hunting lodge in the Austrian mountains who has had a transparent wall close her off from the outside world; all life outside the wall appears to have died. Her story is told through journal entries, a journal which she assumes no one will ever read. At times she wants to give up, but she has a dog and a cat and a cow she must care for, and her bond with them and how they live with, and depend on each other for survival is very moving. There's some good twists along the way. An excellent choice for a book club -Bob
An enjoyable read about a woman, Julia Conley, who inherits her great-aunt's house in England and discovers family secrets and romance, both past (mid-1800's) and present. Interesting characters, a bit of mystery, quick-paced, and easy to go back and forth between time periods. Sue
The Visitors
by Sally Beauman
Beauman's historical novel recreates the true story of the hunt for Tutankhamun's tomb in Egypt's Valley of the Kings in the 1920s from the perspective of 11-year-old Lucy. Lucy is recovering from typhoid, which killed her mother. Lucy makes lifelong friends while in Egypt, and also gets to meet American archaeologist Howard Carter and his wealthy patron, Lord Carnarvon. Told in flashbacks, the elderly Lucy reminisces on her Egypt adventures, prompted by the visit of Dr. Fong, who is making a documentary of the fateful discovery of one of the most intact tombs ever found in Egypt. A wonderful historical novel that artfully blends fact & fiction. -Kim
John Cross is an architect in New York City in 1866 with a big problem. His Harvard graduate son owes $48,000 to James T. Kent, the leader of Kent's Gent, a criminal organization. To erase his son's debt Cross must assist Kent in his criminal endeavors. I found this book to be a fascinating and descriptive portrait of the suffocating high society and the cutthroat world of New York City in its growing years. I was immediately drawn into this book and only put it down once to sleep before finishing it the next day. I found the struggle of the Cross family straddling the thin line between acceptable behavior and ruining their family's reputation very intriguing and well written. I highly recommend this book! -Lisa
Speaking in Bones
by Kathy Reichs A missing girl held prisoner, a tape with her voice, and bone fragments. With these few clues the Forensic Anthropologist Temperance Brennan must find the how, and the who done it. Good read if you like Forensics. -Ann

Coming 10/13 from Jon Land:
Jon Land is a writer's writer. I've been reading him for a long time. He packs every story with menace and peril, providing a feast for any thriller aficionado. In Caitlin Strong he's crafted an alpha heroine who's fresh and poignant and heaping with adrenalin. Strong Light of Day is another pitch-perfect winner from a first class talent.
