The awards will be presented during the annual awards banquet at the Biltmore Hotel in Providence, on October 6th.

Here are this year's winners:

Fiction Winner
Blue Horse: Poems
by Mary Oliver

In this stunning collection of new poems, Mary Oliver returns to the imagery that has defined her life's work, describing with wonder both the everyday and the unaffected beauty of nature.

Herons, sparrows, owls, and kingfishers flit across the page in meditations on love, artistry, and impermanence. Whether considering a bird's nest, the seeming patience of oak trees, or the artworks of Franz Marc, Oliver reminds us of the transformative power of attention and how much can be contained within the smallest moments.

At its heart, Blue Horses asks what it means to truly belong to this world, to live in it attuned to all its changes. Humorous, gentle, and always honest, Oliver is a visionary of the natural world.

Mary Oliver is one of the most celebrated and best-selling poets in America. Her books include Red Bird; Our World; Thirst; Blue Iris; New and Selected Poems, Volume One; and New and Selected Poems, Volume Two. She has also published five books of prose, including Rules for the Dance and, most recently, Long Life.

Non-Fiction Winner
Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End
by Atul Gawande

In Being Mortal, bestselling author Atul Gawande tackles the hardest challenge of his profession: how medicine can not only improve life but also the process of its ending.

Medicine has triumphed in modern times, transforming birth, injury, and infectious disease from harrowing to manageable. But in the inevitable condition of aging and death, the goals of medicine seem too frequently to run counter to the interest of the human spirit. Nursing homes, preoccupied with safety, pin patients into railed beds and wheelchairs. Hospitals isolate the dying, checking for vital signs long after the goals of cure have become moot. Doctors, committed to extending life, continue to carry out devastating procedures that in the end extend suffering.

Gawande, a practicing surgeon, addresses his profession's ultimate limitation, arguing that quality of life is the desired goal for patients and families. Gawande offers examples of freer, more socially fulfilling models for assisting the infirm and dependent elderly, and he explores the varieties of hospice care to demonstrate that a person's last weeks or months may be rich and dignified.

Atul Gawande is author of three bestselling books: Complications, a finalist for the National Book Award; Better; and The Checklist Manifesto. He is also a surgeon at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, a staff writer for The New Yorker, and a professor at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. He and his wife have three children and live in Newton, MA.

Children's Winner
Baba Yaga's Assistant
by Marika McCoola, Illustrated by Emily Carroll

Russian folklore icon Baba Yaga mentors a lonely teen in a wry graphic novel that balances gleefully between the modern and the timeless.

Most children think twice before braving a haunted wood filled with terrifying beasties to match wits with a witch, but not Masha. Her beloved grandma taught her many things: that stories are useful, that magic is fickle, that nothing is too difficult or too dirty to clean. The fearsome witch of folklore needs an assistant, and Masha needs an adventure. She may be clever enough to enter Baba Yaga's house-on-chicken-legs, but within its walls, deceit is the rule. To earn her place, Masha must pass a series of tests, outfox a territorial bear, and make dinner for her host. No easy task, with children on the menu Spooky and poignant, Marika McCoola's stunning debut with richly layered art by acclaimed graphic artist Emily Carroll is a storytelling feat and a visual feast.

Marika McCoola has an MA in writing for children from Simmons College and is a former children's book buyer at an independent bookstore in Massachusetts. Baba Yaga's Assistant marks her publishing debut. She lives in MA.

Emily Carroll is the author-illustrator of the acclaimed and best-selling graphic story collection Through the Woods, as well as numerous web comics. She lives in Stratford, Ontario

The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House
by Kate Anderson Brower

It's sometimes easy to forget that the people living and working in the White House are real human beings. This book is a great behind the scenes look at those people. Part history, part comedy and part soap opera, there's no shortage of stories that range from the Kennedy to the Obama White House. The stories are poignant, and irresistible. If your a fan of House of Cards or Downton Abbey there's a lot to enjoy here.

One Plus One

by JoJo Moyes

Each of JoJo's books are a little different in genre, but I have enjoyed all of them immensely.  "One Plus One" is about Jess Thomas, a single mom of 2 quirky kids and a big, lovable dog.  She is an optimist at heart and believes that if you do right by others and work hard that life and all of it's problems will always work out, but lately her beliefs are getting a beating.  Enter Ed Nicholls, a brilliant and very wealthy techie, but someone who is also very lonely.  Their journey together is funny and heartfelt and not to be missed!!    Sue

By the author of The Good Girl, Pretty Baby is a tight psychological thriller about a homeless teenager & her baby. Heidi Wood sees the girl & her baby by chance one day as she commutes to work & then can't stop thinking about them. Lost Island
by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child

This adventure starts with Gideon Crew being given the task of stealing part of the famous Book of Kells, an Irish national treasure by Eli Glinn, his mysterious employer. As in previous adventures, Gideon is never told the whole story but as the pieces come out he quickly realizes he may be in over his head. This was definitely my favorite of the Gideon Crew stories! It gave me what I've been waiting for since the end of The Ice Limit and the revelation of Eli Glinn's survival of that voyage. We finally got to see behind Eli's stoic façade and into his head to find We finally got to see behind Eli's stoic façade and into his head to find out how that mission changed him forever. Thrills, an ancient journey retraced, crazy treasure hunters and much more make this a perfect vacation or beach read!

Among the Ten Thousand Things

by Julia Pierpoint

This novel starts off with a bang, and the chapters that follow that dramatic opening make it clear that there are going to be as many ingenious twists and turns in this literary novel as there are in a top-notch work of suspense like Gone Girl. The effect is dizzying: as a reader you feel, as the characters do, that the earth keeps shifting beneath your feet.

The Pine Tar Game:

The Kansas City Royals, The New York Yankees and Baseball's Most Absurd and Entertaining Controversy

by Filip Bondy

A game-winning home run becomes a game loser - and 25 days later, it's turned back into the game-winner.

That alone would warrant an entry in baseball's history books. Include a temper tantrum of epic proportion, and hinge it all on an obscure old rule - and you've got the infamous Pine Tar Game.

Dylan Goes Electric: Newport, Seeger, Dylan, and the Night That Split the 60's

by Elijah Wald

At the Newport Folk Fest 50 years ago, Bob Dylan did the unthinkable, the unforgiveable: He plugged in an electric guitar, and he rocked hard. The crowd was stunned. The folk faithful were betrayed. That's the mythology, anyway, but without question, it proved to be a major turning point in music history.

A Cure for Suicide

by Jesse Ball

No monsters. No killer plagues, vampires or nuclear war. No war of any kind, actually. Really, no unkindness. No hunger. No want. No consequences that can't be undone with a kind smile, a little nap and, of course, the needle.

Jesse Ball's world in A Cure For Suicide is missing pretty much every trope and crutch that makes for a proper dystopia by today's standards. The one thing it does have? Zombies. Lots and lots of zombies.

Barbarian Days: A Surfing Life
by William Finnegan

Long time journalist and New Yorker Staff Writer, Finnegan has written about many subjects, but his memoir is almost entirely concerned with wave riding. He lovingly remembers every break, treating them like old friends who only occasionally tried to brutally murder him. In a sense, Barbarian Days functions as a 450-page thank you letter, masterfully crafted, to everyone who tolerated and even encouraged his lifelong obsession. It's a way to help them - and us - understand what drives him to keep paddling out half a century after first picking up a board.

Circling the Sun

by Paula McClain

From the author of The Paris Wife comes a novel about aviator and adventurer Beryl Markham. McLain has created a voice that is lush and intricate, and evokes a character who is enviably brave and independent. Markham's self-stated challenge is overcoming the "horrible crimes [of] being a woman and daring to think I could be free." Soaring high over the Atlantic at the age of 28, she finally embraces the freedom she seeks when she learns to defy gravity.
