The Half Brother by Holly LeCraw

An intricate tale of loyalty and betrayal, secrets and truths...LeCraw brings southern gothic to staid New England in a tale reminiscent of Pat Conroy, Anne Rivers Siddons, Anne Tyler, and Donna Tartt.

The Farm
by Tom Rob Smith

Great psychological thriller that pits wife against husband with the son hopelessly in the middle of them. Should Daniel trust his father who claims his mother is unwell, hinting at mental breakdown? Or does he believe his frightened mother when she whispers that his father is involved in a terrible conspiracy?

This Dark Road To Mercy
 by Wiley Cash

Set in the South and at times a haunting, violent, but also uplifting story.  2 young girls are sent to an orphanage when their mother dies.  Their Dad had relinquished his parental rights several years earlier.  Then their Dad shows up wanting to redeem himself, but ends up smuggling the girls out of the home in the middle of the night.  He has a duffle bag of cash that doesn't belong to him, a very nasty ex-con on his tail, and a caseworker who is trying to get the girls back. No one's life is easy in this story, but the various reasons for their troubles is why I kept reading it straight through.  A great read!!!

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane
by Kate DiCamillo

This is a sweet story written from the perspective of a porcelain rabbit who looses his adoring, 9 year-old owner. Lost in a world of sharp corners and harsh truths, his delicate heart faces obstacles of confusion, pain, and loss. It's a very thoughtful book about learning how to love with a shattered heart- you don't have to be young to like this one.

Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania
by Erik Larson

May 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of this ship and author Erik Larson brings that last voyage alive again with a fresh look at the ship, her passengers and crew as well as the crew of the U-boat that sunk her. With a fascinating cast of characters, it reads like a thriller, and the smooth narrative tackles the story from a global perspective as well as a personal one.

(This book will be released on 3/10)

The Nethergrim

by Matthew Jobin

While browsing through the new books at work I came across "The Nethergrim". It looked interesting and although it is written for children 10 and up, I gave it a try. I was immediately drawn into the story of three friends (Edmund, Katherine and Tom) and their lives in the tiny village of Moorvale. After mysterious animal and children disappearances, the friends are forced into battle against the evil Nethergrim and his horrible minions. The Thornbeast was especially disturbing and scary to me. The characters were well written as were the descriptions of the land, creatures and actions. My only problem with this book was now that I have read it, I'm already eager for the next one. I enjoyed this book and will recommend it to my customers.

This Month's Featured Local Interest Titles

In Danger at Sea: Adventures of a New England Fishing Family
by Capt. Samuel S. Cottle

A local bestseller, now available in a new paperback edition.
Books have been written about commercial fishermen, but few have been written by them. This is the real thing. Cottle grew up in a fishing family and became a captain in his own right in Galilee. Here are his firsthand accounts of life at sea, from the terror of a vessel's sinking to the excitement of dragging up unexploded depth charges to the ultimate satisfaction that comes with an honest day's haul.

The Captain's Dilemma
by Gail Eastwood

This historical romance novel is set in Regency England. A young English girl risks treason when she comes to the aid of a handsome escaped French army prisoner. They are both prepared to risk their lives and their hearts.

More novels to follow from this author who lives in Rhode Island. .

Canyon Fever : And Other Short Fishing Stories
 by Dennis C. Dillon

Join Captain Frank Hardy and the crew of the Lucky in a riveting tale of encounters with sharks, porpoises, big-eyes, yellow-fins and other great offshore game fish in Canyon Fever. Many fishermen never get to the Northeast Atlantic Canyons and wonder what it's like to fish there. Experience fishing the Canyon, a place where great fish truly live while also learning "how to's" embedded by Author/Captain Dennis Dillon. Hired Hand, Captain Jerk and Unforgettable Striper are just a few of the tales in Other Fishing Stories of the Sea. These short stories depict fishing events in the lives of charter boat captains, commercial rod and reel pin-hookers, their families and friends. Although fictional, these tales by Captain Denny are based on his many years as a commercial pin-hooker and charter boat skipper.

2013-2014 Anthology

by the Neighborhood Writers Guild

The Neighborhood Guild of South Kingstown introduces their "2013-2014 Anthology" from the Creative Writers Group. If we could peer behind the russet curtains or eavesdrop around corners or stalk hidden passagways of the soul, we would likely find ourselves on a literary journey much akin to these writings within. In stories, essays and poetry, This collections of works is fraught with tales of war and it's aftermath, secrets, friendship, betrayal, love and it's redemption-or not.
