Christian McBurney, author of:

Spies in Revolutionary Rhode Island

Espionage played a vital role during the Revolutionary War in Rhode Island, both when the British and later the French occupied Newport and the rest of Aquidneck Island. The British and Americans each employed spies to discover the secrets, plans and positions of their enemy.

Christian was raised in Kingston, Rhode Island in a home built in 1809. Before graduating from South Kingstown High School he wrote a book on the history of Kingston. While at Brown University he wrote a 300-page undergraduate history thesis on colonial South Kingstown planter society.  After graduating from New York University School of Law in 1985, He embarked on a career as an attorney.  With a renewed interest in history he wrote the adult version of the history of Kingston, which was published in 2004.He has since written several other books on Rhode Island History.

Event December 13th
Saturday 12/13 from 12pm-2pm

Jon Land, author of Strong Darkness

Texas Ranger Caitlin Strong returns in her most thrilling adventure yet in Jon Land's STRONG DARKNESS.

Texas Ranger Caitlin Strong finds herself pursuing a serial killer whose methods are eerily similar to the one pursued by her great-grandfather almost a century-and-a-half before.

But that's just the beginning of her problems. The son of her boyfriend is nearly beaten to death at Brown University. The investigation leads back to Texas and to the Chinese high-tech company awarded the contract to build the US's 5G network. Li Zhen, the company's founder, counts that as the greatest achievement of his career, but it hides his true motivations-nothing less than China's total domination of the United States. Darkness is coming, and only Caitlin Strong can find the light before it's too late.

Be sure to check out all of his Caitlin Strong Novels:

Winners of the 2014 National Book Award:

For Fiction: Redeployment by Phil Klay

Redeployment takes readers to the front lines of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, asking us to understand what happened there and what happened to the soldiers who returned. Interwoven with themes of brutality and faith, guilt and fear, helplessness and survival, the characters in these stories struggle to make meaning out of chaos.

For Non Fiction : Age of Ambition: Chasing Fortune, Truth, and Faith in the New China by Evan Osnos

In Age of Ambition, Evan Osnos describes the greatest collision taking place in China: the clash between the rise of the individual and the Communist Party's struggle to retain control. Osnos follows the moving stories of everyday people and reveals life in the new China to be a battleground between aspiration and authoritarianism, in which only one can prevail.

For Poetry: Faithful and Virtuous Night by Louise Glück

You enter the world of this spellbinding book through one of its many dreamlike portals. Each time you enter, it's the same place but it has been arranged differently. This is a story of adventure, an encounter with the unknown, a knight's undaunted journey into the kingdom of death.  It tells a single story, but the parts are mutable and the great sweep of its narrative mysterious and fateful, heartbreaking, and charged with
                                           wonder.

For Young Readers : Brown Girl Dreaming
by Jacqueline Woodson

Raised in South Carolina and New York, Woodson always felt halfway home in each place. In vivid poems, she shares what it was like to grow up as an African American in the 1960s and 1970s, living with the remnants of Jim Crow and her growing awareness of the Civil Rights movement. Touching and powerful, each poem is both accessible and emotionally charged, each line a glimpse into a child's soul as she searches for her place in the world.
