August's feature author will be Norb Vonnegut
author of Gods of Greenwich

Jimmy Cusack is the tough kid from a blue-collar neighborhood who made good on Wall Street. Well, almost. After a sterling start to his career, things have soured. His hedge fund collapsed. The bank is foreclosing on his condominium. And his wife is two months pregnant. That's the good news. When Cusack takes a "must-have" job with LS Capital, a fund impervious to capital market woes, his real troubles begin. Both Cusack and his wife find their lives in jeopardy as they uncover grim secrets that will make you forget Bernie Madoff or Gordon Gekko.

There's a new villain on Wall Street, and his name is.... A thriller for the post-meltdown world of global finance.

"If anybody can turn international finance and hedge funds into a riveting thriller, it's Norb Vonnegut. The Gods of Greenwich is a pure delight, racing relentlessly from the bedrooms of Manhattan to the boardrooms of Connecticut to the banks of Iceland. Bravo!"

Author Event at the Peacedale Public Library

Tuesday August 12th at 4pm

The Peacedale Public Library Welcomes Professor Joseph Luzzi author of
My Two Italies

Luzzi -a professor of Italian at Bard College - was born in America to Calabrian immigrants. In his elegant, thoughtful new memoir, he writes of watching his father and uncle carve up an entire goat, make wine, and hold a meeting of brothers to determine the fate of an uncle's unfaithful wife. And this was not 19th-century Calabria, but Rhode Island in the 1970s.

Luzzi's book effectively covers lots of ground on Italian identity as a whole: Culture, food and politics. On Americans of Italian descent, he writes "we Italian Americans suffer from a form of cultural schizophrenia, half of our soul nourished by centuries of European arts and letters," while the other half is "contaminated" by The Godfather and The Sopranos.

Customer review by Isobel McCullough
Landline by Rainbow Rowell

What would it be like to have a window into the past? Or, in Georgie McCool's case, a phone?
Rainbow Rowell's latest novel provokes thought on the choices we make in life, and whether or not trying to change the past is a good idea.
Georgie McCool is a realistic and interesting main character. Rowell has also developed the supporting characters just as fully, which adds greater depth to the story. The plot is unique and refreshingly devoid of cliches.

Like Rowell's previous work, "Landline" is written with humor but also a  keen eye for the pain of the human condition. It made me think about right and wrong choices more than any book has in a long time.

"Landline" is a wonderful quick read, but one that leaves the reader with much to think on. It is a singular piece of fiction
 I would highly recommend.

Artillary Company of Newport
by Walter Schroeder

The Artillery Company of Newport, Rhode Island's oldest all-volunteer Militia unit was established in 1741 by action of the General Assembly of the British Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Serving under its original Charter, the Company for many years was an active participant and supplier of manpower in military conflicts of the 19th and 20th centuries. In modern times the Company, as an active member of the Rhode Island Council of Historic Military Commands, functions as an educational, non-profit organization upholding the traditions of the past. This book provides the reader with a first-hand opportunity to witness the formation of the unit in 1741 via a series of historic documents, as well as the Company's rise to fame and honor by way of an outstanding collection of artifacts that are maintained in its Armory and Museum, and presented here as an integrated pictorial history.

Women of Great Island
by Dianne Comiske

A colonial English tavern, situated on an island in Cape Cod Bay, Massachusetts, between the years 1690-1740 provides the setting for The Women of Great Island Tavern. Established to serve as a refuge and lookout station for on-shore whalers who harvest the local pilot whales, the tavern becomes home to six women. All but one new arrival narrates her story in the first person and introduces her initial role in the story. Subsequent and inter-weaving first and third person narratives trace the developing stories and supportive relationships among the women themselves-relationships that mirror the social, matriarchal behavior of the pilot whales that the men hunt.

The Wife,
by Meg Wolitzer

This is the story of a marriage of two writers, one famous, one not. The wife, Joan, narrates this story of her relationship with her famous writer husband with such a vivid voice that one feels she is sitting next to you telling you this story. One might assume there is nothing more to say about being married. Not so. Meg Wollitzer has a great story to tell, with a great plot and memorable characters. Give it a chance and you'll find that you have a new writer to enjoy.

Sycamore Row
by John Grisham

John Grisham returns to Ford County Mississippi with the story of a wealthy dying man who just days before his death decides to ignore his previous will and write a new handwritten will that cuts out his family, and leaves nearly all of his money to his black maid. The second will raises far more questions than it answers. He leaves a letter to Attorney Jake Brigance to defend the handwritten will at all costs, as family, legal, and racial tensions mount. A great legal thriller that Grisham writes with confidence.

The hardcover is available now, and the paperback comes out August 19th

Iron House
by John Hart

John Hart is just incredible the way he weaves together a suspenseful page-turning mystery with a great family story. This is the story of two orphan brothers and the tracts their lives take when one runs away from the orphanage, iron house, and the other is adopted by a wealthy politically connected family. Lots of different plots and action in this one!

My Wish List
 by Gregoire Delacourt

Good story about a middle-aged woman named Jocelyne who lives in a small town in France where she runs a fabric shop, has been married to the same man for twenty-one years, and has raised two children. She begins to wonder what happened to all the dreams and plans she had when she was seventeen. Then something extraordinary happens, on a whim she buys a lottery ticket and wins eighteen million euros (@ $25 million US Dollars). She doesn't tell anyone but starts to make lists of what she could buy/do with the money. Her lists begin to change as her feelings toward what she could buy versus what she really needs change. I felt a connection with Jocelyne as I thought of what I would do with a big lottery win now versus what I would have done when I was seventeen. I applauded Jocelyne's choices and how she come into her own in the end. Although she is a character in a book, I would like to thank Jocelyne for reminding me what is important in life that money can't buy. Perfect for book groups or a quick summer read! (Lisa)

I am the Messenger

by Marcus Zusak

A story of heroism through the eyes of an "average joe", I am the Messenger is both thrilling and unexpectedly warming. When the protagonist Ed accidently stops a bank robbery, his miserably simplistic life is brought to an unwelcome, yet opportunistic halt. Zusak's writing creates a sharp, realistic tone for the story.  Furthermore, Ed's unconfident, meek personality creates an uncoordinated hero whom is easy to root for. Ultimately, it's a refreshingly sincere novel exploring the abilities of the extraordinarily average.

The Ecstasy & Agony of being a Red Sox fan.

by Stanley Harris

"  I went to my first Red Sox game in 1942.

My story, The Ecstasy & Agony of a Red Sox Fan, describes the highs and lows, the joys and disappointments, and the gratification and frustration of following the Boston Red Sox - as a child, a teenager, an adult, and a senior. Reading it may help explain to some the peculiar paranoia that permeates the psyche of older Red Sox fans, and help newer fans understand why their parents and grandparents are still tense when the Sox have a four-run lead with two outs and none on for their oponents in the ninth inning. "
-Stanley Harris

"GREAT book about Sox. Can't put it down. My son Mike is going to read it and I am encouraging all my Red Sox friends to do the same.

I have laughed cried and nodded my head in agreement on so many parts of the book. Can not thank you enough for writing it."

A Red Sox fan from South Carolina

On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane's bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War.
