Summer of 2014 kicks off another season of Authors on Main starting on June 22 with Brunonia Barry, the New York Times Best-Selling Author of "The Lace Reader" and "The Map of True Places" (newly out in paperback).

Her bewitching gothic novel,
The Lace Reader, has been called a "richly imagined saga of passion, suspense, and magic" by Time Magazine. It is a haunting and remarkable tale told by an unforgettable, if strangely unreliable narrator-a woman from an enigmatic Salem family who can foretell the future in patterns of lace. The Lace Reader was a runaway New York Times bestseller.

The Map of True Places

A emotionally resonant novel of tragedy, secrets, identity, and love.
The moving and remarkable tale of a psychotherapist who discovers the strands of her own life in the death of a troubled patient. The Map of True Places is another glorious display of the unique storytelling prowess that inspired Toronto's Globe and Mail to exclaim "Brunonia Berry can write, boy can she write."

Great Books by Local authors.....

Swim That Rock
by John Rocco and Jay Primiano

When his dad goes missing in a fishing-boat accident, fourteen-year-old Jake refuses to think he may have lost his father forever. But suddenly, nothing seems certain in Jake's future, and now his family's diner may be repossessed by loan sharks. In Narragansett Bay, scrabbling out a living as a quahogger isn't easy, but with the help of some local clammers, Jake is determined to work hard and earn enough money to ensure his family's security and save the diner in time. Told with cinematic suspense and a true compassion for the characters, Swim That Rock is a fast-paced coming-of-age story that beautifully and evocatively captures the essence of coastal Rhode Island life, the struggles of blue-collar family dynamics, and the dreams of one boy to come into his own.

Marathon
 by Kerry Sheeran

THE MARATHON follows a couple's attempt to save both their child's life and their dwindling faith. In THE MARATHON, Sheeran courageously reveals the innermost thoughts and fears of parents struggling with experiences far beyond their control. Her true story uncovers the heart and soul behind one of the world's most historic races while beautifully demonstrating the power of inner strength, endurance, and human connection.

Tied For Third (AND Still the Winner)
by A.J. Fargnoli

The author shares his story of how he got involved in music, and then his venture into the world of education. This comedic reading and sometimes teary eyed script sets the stage for the reader to imagine the settings the author has experienced. From a demeaning pius authority to silly, innocent youth and territorial secretaries and custodians, 'Tied For Third' will make you laugh, cry and smile from time to time.

Princess Bing Bong Rides a Bike
by Vanessa Paniccia

Princess Bing Bong is not your ordinary princess.  She has little interest in conforming. Good hearted, but always wants to know what would happen if things weren't done the way they should be!  There's nothing predictable about her!  This is the third book in the series.

Recent Staff Reads........

Conquest: Book 1, The Chronicles of The Invaders
 by John Connolly.

This is the story of an alien race, the Illyri, who conquer Earth for its resources and to use humans as fighters/slaves in its quest to extend the Illyrian empire throughout the universe. Of course, the humans resist through a network of rebellious cells that they believe are secure from Illyri traitors....of course, they are wrong.
The story started off slowly as it follows a young Illyri named Syl who is the daughter of a high ranking Illyri official, focusing on the young alien's feelings and emotions towards the human beings who hate her. But the action began to flow soon enough as both the humans and the conquering Illyri learn that it is dangerous to trust anyone, even their own kind. This is the first in a trilogy, so be warned; it will leave you hanging & and anxious for more.

Suspect
by Robert Crais

Robert Crais is one of my favorite PI mystery writers.  Fast-paced and suspenseful, his books are hard to put down and he makes me feel like I know his characters.  This story does not have his usual duo of Elvis Cole & Joe Pike, but LA cop Scott James and his newly acquired partner, German Shepard Maggie, stole my heart while solving the mystery.  James lost his previous partner, Stephanie, in a gun fight and Maggie lost her handler in Afghanistan.  Neither are in a good place, but together as they solve the crime of who killed Stephanie, they learn to lean on each other, trust, and love again.  Very moving and powerful for a crime mystery.  Loved It!!

Help For the Haunted

by John Searles

On a snowy evening Sylvie Mason's paranormal parents were shot to death in a church while Sylvie waited for them in the car. Now she lives with her neglectful sister Rose, trying to reconcile her parents' lives and her own path as dark family secrets surface in the house where the Masons followed thier supernatural calling. A breathtaking coming-of-age story.

Under the Egg
by Laura Marx Fitzgerald

Meet Theodora Tenpenny, a thirteen year old girl who is struggling to hang on to the family's two-hundred-year-old town house and support her unstable mother on her grandfather's legacy of $ 463. Theo is a very resourceful young lady who impressed me with her determination and self-sufficiency. After a mishap with one of her grandfather's paintings she finds what appears to be an old masterpiece from Raphael, but she'll have to accept help from others to prove or disprove it's authenticity. Along the way she makes friends with the daughter of famous parents, a female priest, a knowledgeable street vendor and a slightly unorthodox librarian. I loved how Theo did most of her research the old fashion way with books and trips to the museum instead of reaching for the latest gadget which is what her friend Bodhi does. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who loves to read, solve mysteries or even loves art.
